Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Grigio 2014
Central Valley, Chile$9.95
This Pinot Grigio has a nose of stone and tropical fruit (peach, dried pineapple). The palate is medium bodied, slightly viscous with lemon citrus providing good acidic structure. Very good length but the 14% ABV is noticeable with a slight burn. Like the entire Cono Sur Bicicleta organic line, it provides good quality at an unbeatable price. Feb. 2015.
Moris Morellino Di Scansano 2012, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$16.25
Medium ruby in colour. Not very complex either on the nose or palate and slightly confected, but the shnoz detects red berry and red cherry fruit, anise, herbs and oak (vanilla/mocha). Similar fruit/oak profile on the palate with medium plus acidity and medium tannin (it may have softened with a half year age in the bottle compared to the pro critics' assessment of tannin). Correct for Sangiovese. Good to very good length. Works well with tomato based pastas. April 2015.
Cave Spring Gamay 2013, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$16.95
Gamay does so well in Niagara and Cave Spring's 2013 is a good example. Cherry and red berry fruit, a hint of mocha, a dash of pepper and good vibrancy from the higher acidity. Decent length. Very food friendly, this makes a versatile house wine, so keep a few bottles on hand. Feb. 2015.
Mas Des Bressades Cuvée Tradition Rosé 2014, Ap Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France$16.95
A bright salmon coloured Rhone Rose. Aromas of watermelon, tart berry, florals, minerals, spice and pepper. Medium bodied, with succulent acidity making this wine very food friendly. A bit hot. Paired nicely with pork sausage, red pepper and red onion brochettes in a balsamic glaze. July 2015.
Faustino V Tempranillo Rosado 2014, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$12.00
Vibrant pink hue. Red berry fruity Rose that is essentially dry but there is residual sugar apparent. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel, a touch spicey with a slightly bitter finish. As is typical with Rose, it is quite food friendly. Good length. I love the bargains on good de-listed wines at the LCBO. Stock up while you can. Oct. 2015.
Wildass Red 2012, VQA Niagara On The Lake
Ontario, Canada$21.95
Taking advantage of the warm 2012 Vintage, assemblagiste J.L. Groux does a fine job with this easy drinking blend. Oak is more than just implied, fruit is ripe and pure, and good structure through acidity and tannin (no weight watchers needed here). score 88-89. Nov. 2015.
Inniskillin Discovery Series Malbec 2012, VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$23.95
The Okanagan is not known for Malbec, but that's what Inniskillin's Discovery Series is about - less typical offerings. This one kinda works with both red and dark fruit, minty herbs, and cedar. The body is medium with restrained alcohol, the structure is firm with medium plus acidity and still young sticky tannins that soften with air. The palate transitions from initially sweet to savoury. Worth a try if you come across it, but not a multi-bottle purchase at this price. Aug. 2015.
Ogier Ventoux Rosé 2014
Rhône, France$14.55
Pleasant aromatic, dry, Southern French rose. Fresh red berry, good acidity, medium plus body and very good length. A touch hot. At this price, particularly on sale, a great value. April 2016.
Château Mirambeau Papin 2010, Ac
Bordeaux, France$24.95
Good typicity on the nose with black currant, cedar, herb and licorice, but fairly bitter, unbalanced and hot. Dry, fuller bodied with decent acidity and light dusty tannin. Moderately long finish. March 2016.
Donnachiara Irpinia Coda Di Volpe 2013, Dop
Campania, Italy$13.75
This is a foxy wine. Not a foxy scent of course, rather, an alluring wine. Relatively shy nose (foxes are not the most gregarious of creatures), but a fairly substantial palate with medium plus body, and flavours of orange and lemon citrus, minerality and a slightly bitter late palate. Medium plus acidity and excellent length. Quite food friendly. Definitely not a case of the tail wagging the fox. The quality/price ratio is cunningly good. Sept. 2016.
