A nice Greco di Tufo from Campania offering citrus fruit, florals, white pepper, anise, almond and saline minerality. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel, good acidity and a lemony mineral finish. Mezzacorona Novio Vino Novello 2016 Bottle
Mezzacorona Novio Vino Novello 2016
Alto Adige-Trentino, Italy
$8.95

A great little Novello style of wine from Trentino. With smaller yields and good winemaking the Teroldego grape can produce really interesting wine. In this case the quality of the Teroldego grape helps elevate this simple refreshing "Nouveau" style to something with a little more substance and style. Fresh berry fruit, cherry, florals, soft tannin and that unmistakeable almost bubble gum beaujolais-like note, with decent purity of fruit and depth. At $8.00 I was more than happy to procure the last few bottles in my area. For immediate consumption. Feb. 2017.

Cave Spring Rose 2016, VQA Niagara Escarpment Bottle
Cave Spring Rose 2016, VQA Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada
$15.95

A very serviceable Rose just in time for the warmer weather. Red berry fruit is pronounced, as it should be, with a nice balance between RS and acidity. Perception of sweetness from the RS and the fruit pushes towards off dry, but the wine is essentially dry. Medium body, creamy and bright acidity with good length. Pair this with pork with fruit compote topping. Good value in an Ontario Rose. May 2018.

Valle Reale Sentieri Pecorino 2015, Doc Bottle
Valle Reale Sentieri Pecorino 2015, Doc
Abruzzo, Italy
$15.95

Here's a fresh and zesty Pecorino from the Abruzzo Region. It is fresh and bright with citrus and minerality. A sense of creamy, leesy character and a touch sour/bitter. Medium plus acidity and medium bodied, it has good length of finish. Demeter certified biodynamic. Pair with shellfish, lemon dressed fish or chicken and of course, sheep's milk cheese. March 2017.

Malivoire Ladybug Rosé 2016, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Malivoire Ladybug Rosé 2016, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$16.95

One of the most popular roses in Ontario, the 2016 shows off the ripe fruit of the very dry vintage in a cab franc, pinot and gamay blend. Red berry fruit with bright acidity and minerality. It's medium bodied with a nice balance to the structural elements (including the acidity and off-dry RS interplay). Very good length too. Nicely done. Tasted Oct. 2017.

Frano Milos Plavac 2012, Peljesac Peninsula Bottle
Frano Milos Plavac 2012, Peljesac Peninsula
Croatia
$20.95

This Plavac Mali shows a fairly intense nose with typical dark fruit (blackberry, blueberry, dark plum), red rose florality, leather, cinnamon, cedar and a hint of brett. The small thick skinned berries of the Plava Mali grape typically produce tannic wine, and this version fits the bill with still agressive but ripe tannin that needs either air, time or protein to tame. Medium acidity and very good length. Rustic and built for the long haul as the fruit concentration, alcohol and tannin provide the stuffing for another 3-5 years of improvement in bottle. June 2017.

Lacey Estates Pinot Noir 2015, VQA Prince Edward County Bottle
Lacey Estates Pinot Noir 2015, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada
$25.00

Lacey's 2015 Pinot is a strong effort. Medium plus intensity aromatics express primarily County minerality. The palate showcases more of the fruit with typical County cran-cherry and red berry, also nutmeg and minerality along with a funky meaty earthy element. Framed by juicy acidity and very soft tannin. Very good length. Aug. 2017.

Broccatelli Galli Montefalco Rosso 2014, Doc Bottle
Broccatelli Galli Montefalco Rosso 2014, Doc
Umbria, Italy
$11.75

This Rosso blend of Sagrantino and Sangiovese isn't quite fully integrated and comes across as lacking balance. There's cherry fruit and good acidity from the Sangiovese, dark fruit and medium plus bitter tannin from the Sangrantino, and decent length, but it has edges. Oak treatment is noticeable and not harmonious. Alcohol heat is also noticeable. In need of decanting, meaty protein, or further aging to integrate better. Feb. 2018.

Cave Spring Riesling 2015, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Cave Spring Riesling 2015, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$15.95

I've said many times that Cave Spring is probably Ontario's best Riesling specialist, and quite affordable with their Estate at $19 and their CSV at under $30. This entry level off dry version is consistently good value at $15.95. There's a precision of balance here between RS and acidity, giving the perception of splitting the difference between dry and off dry. Apple and citrus fruit that plays airy on the palate then that juicy acidity and very good length. Nov. 2017.

Sella & Mosca Riserva Cannonau Di Sardegna 2013, Doc Bottle
Sella & Mosca Riserva Cannonau Di Sardegna 2013, Doc
Sardinia, Italy
$17.95

This perenially good Grenache dominant wine from the Vintages Essentials collection takes a dip in quality for the 2013 vintage. Somewhat disjointed and unbalanced. There's good typicity with cherry fruit and spice, but there's also a distinct meaty, earthy character. Alcohol heat is pronounced. Medium acidity, medium minus tannin and good length. Not bad value while on sale, and a decent table wine, but not a sipper on its own. Oct. 2017.
