Balbi Soprani Brachetto D'acqui, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$13.25
Here's a fun sweet red spumante that shows red berry fruit and soft effervescence that dissipates fairly quickly. A bit cream soda like but quite enjoyable as an aperitif or a nice accompaniment to fruit flans, berry pies and such. March 2017.
Beronia Tempranillo 2010, Rioja
Rioja, Spain$12.90
This rioja sits ruby red in the glass. It exhibits a fruity nose and on the palate there is dark fruit with some oak. The fruit is balanced with decent acidity and mild tannins. Good length too. A competent wine that certainly won't offend, and at this price what's not to like! So grip it n' sip it! June 2013.
Malivoire Gamay 2011, VQA Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada$17.95
A semi-translucent light cherry coloured wine, this Gamay opens with aromas of strawberry and spice. LIght to medium on the palate, fresh red fruits carry through (again notably strawberry and cherry) with pepper and a hint of bitterness and oaky vanilla. Tannins are present but mild. The acidity doesn't quite measure up to the fruit, but all in all the wine is decently balanced. There's a nice lengthy finish here. Chill slightly and decant for 15-30 minutes. Grip it n' sip it! August 2013.
Château Des Charmes Cabernet/Merlot 2010, VQA Niagara On The Lake, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$12.00
Deep ruby colour. Cassis and plum, spice box , vanilla, licorice. Graphite, and pepper on the palate. A sour late palate. Medium bodied with still noticeably tannic traction. Good length. Not a harmonius package, lacking balance. July 2014.
Calamus Cosmic White 2012, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$11.75
I find Riesling and Gewurz to be the dominant varieties on the nose of this pleasant white blend, with petrol, peach, pear and florals. Off dry,the mouthfeel is creamy viscous with a honeyed note and medium plus citrusy acidity that provides a seam of structure for the ripe fruit. A slight bitter late palate. Good length. Decent patio sipper or acoutrement for spicy Thai/Vietnamese cuisine. Aug. 2015.
Coffin Ridge Into The Light White 2012, VQA Ontario
Ontario, Canada$20.45
The 2013 is a deep golden colour and very aromatic with floral notes and melon, honey and quince. The palate profile is much more along the citrus spectrum with lemon and lime. There's also a slightly bitter herbaceous element. Good acidity provides balance to the fruitiness, with some complexity here and a very good length. A bit hot on the finish. Fun dark humour marketing with all the coffin and death references. Aug. 2014.
Stanners Chardonnay Lincoln Lakeshore 2012, VQA Lincoln Lakeshore
Ontario, Canada$23.00
An intriquing Chard. Part tank and part oak fermentation lends judicious oak characteristics including vanilla. Concentrated fruit with citrus, pear and apple notes. Good acidity. There's body here with a creamy viscous mouthfeel (15% ABV - yowser). June 2014.
Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel 2012
California, Usa$17.95
A pleasant, smooth, medium bodied fresher style Cali zin. Not very complex and rather short, but still a nice change from the more fruit bomb type entry level Cali zins. Brambly, integrated oak, balanced acidity, soft and light tannins. Decent value when purchased on sale. Feb. 2015.
Fred Loimer Lois Grüner Veltliner 2013
Niederösterreich, Austria$17.95
Here's a good value Gruner, with notes of apple, lemon, minerality, but with only a slight touch of the characteristic white pepper for which GV is known. Racy acidity, almost austere, this is quite food friendly, as any GV should be. Very good length. Aug 2016.
Viña Herminia Excelsus 2009
Rioja, Spain$23.95
This wine is definitely showing its age. Aromas of dark stewed and dried fruit, prune, fig, iodine, leather and baking spice. On the palate there's bitterness, and savoury characteristics like teriyaki. Tannins are still present but smooth out with air. Some alcohol heat. Ok length. A bit past it's prime so drink now. August 2014.
