Zenato Ripassa Valpolicella Superiore 2010, Doc
Veneto, Italy$25.95
If Amarone is your style but slightly above your price point, try this nice ruby coloured Ripasso. A fruity nose gives way to a jammy fruit filled palate, integrated nicely with acidity. A bit tannic and hot (serve slightly chilled and decanted). There's a suggestion of sourness and herb but fruit wins out. A bit hot on the lingering finish. This could be cellared short to mid term. Dec. 2013.
Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Marlborough, New Zealand$17.45
The 2014 version sits almost clear in the glass. A good Kiwi sauv blanc representative, there's peach, tangerine and passion fruit aromas, with a resinous green character. Medium bodied, with some creamy viscosity and medium plus lemony acidity. January 2015.
Stanners Pinot Noir 2011, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$30.00
A somewhat translucent Pinot, almost Rose like in colour. This is lighter than its 2010 cousin, with strawberry and currant fruit, an earthy savouriness and good PEC minerality. I found the fruit a little shy given the acidic edge. Tannins are quite soft. Overall very good. September 2014.
Long Dog Top Dog Pinot Noir 2010, Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$30.00
Some garnet creeping into the light ruby almost translucent colour. Red berry nose with spice, cedar and minerality. The palate is savoury, with more red berry fruit, baking spice, pepper, and stoney minerality from that southern PEC loamy clay over limestone. Medium plus acidity, softer smooth tannin and a touch of heat. Very good length. Drinking well now, I wouldn't hold on to this Pinot too much longer. June 2016.
Trapiche Broquel Malbec 2012
Mendoza, Argentina$14.95
This purple ruby opaque Malbec offers ripe, almost raisiny dark fruit. There are aromas of caraway, pepper, oaky spice and a slight medicinal note. Fuller bodied, with medium acidity and ripe tannins. Very good length. Would work well with stews, roasts and beef short ribs. Excellent value. Dec. 2014.
Norman Hardie Riesling 2013, VQA Ontario
Ontario, Canada$21.00
Norman Hardies's 2013 Riesling is a light yellow wine with a hint of a green tinge. It offers pronounced citrus aromas with lemon, tart apple and mineral flavours. High acidity counters an almost off-dry style. Not austere, but there's a suggestion of stinginess due to the racey acidity. Light bodied, excellent length. June 2014.
Cave Spring Estate Bottled Chardonnay 2012, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$18.95
A soft creamy, viscous chard that's part big and part cool climate in style. The 2012 vintage delivers ripe fruit though, more towards the tree fruit and tropical range with apple, melon and banana. But on the palate there's some lemony acidity that acts as a nice foil to the thick, waxy, honeyed mouthfeel. All in all a nice Chard for a decent price. Feb. 2015.
Henry Of Pelham Reserve Baco Noir 2012, VQA Ontario
Ontario, Canada$24.95
H of P is well known for their Baco. Deep ruby purple and opaque. Somewhat over oaked for my preference, but still, there are good things happening in the glass. Juicy acidity gives some structure to the darker stewed fruit. Aromas of iodine, meat, anise, herbal mint, spice and oaky mocha. Tannins are present but moderate. Length is very good. There's a certain brambleness to this Baco, almost Zin like. Paired well with bbq ribs. Oct. 2015.
Flat Rock Unplugged Chardonnay 2013, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$16.95
Aromas of yellow apple, pear and melon. Lactic, yet slightly reductive with a hint of flint. Viscous creamy mouthfeel with mouthwatering citrusy acidity. Some alcohol heat is present. Decent length. A good entry into the increasingly popular unoaked (unplugged) chard genre. July 2015.
Montecillo Crianza 2010
Rioja, Spain$13.10
A juicy crianza that offers excellent value for the money. While oak is definitely present, it isn't over the top. Notes of cherries, leather, tobacco, baking spice. A solid structure framed by tannin and acidity, and a very good length that ends with a peppery finish. Some alcohol heat - serve at 60-64 degrees. Nov. 2014.
