Carmen Carmenère Reserva 2011 Bottle
Carmen Carmenère Reserva 2011
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$11.50

Dark fruit filled nose for this cherry coloured juicy wine. Medium length, rounded, with tannins only making a guest appearance. Very tasty but some heat on the finish that is somewhat diminished when briefly chilled. A nice sipper but also a good playmate for a wide range of vittles. Unbeatable value at $10 (currently on sale at LCBO). Feb 2013.

Goats Do Roam Goat Roti Syrah/Viognier 2010, Wo Coastal Region Bottle
Goats Do Roam Goat Roti Syrah/Viognier 2010, Wo Coastal Region
South Africa
$14.75

Dark ruby color. Somewhat unbalanced. This wine's smokiness and spice dominate, making it a good match for bbq'd fare. LCBO's current $3.00 off sale brings this wine into good value territory, so Grip it n' sip it! May 2013.

Sandbanks Winery Baco Reserve 2010, Ontario Bottle
Sandbanks Winery Baco Reserve 2010, Ontario
Canada
$19.95

This P.E. County Baco is a ruby colour. Blackberry, cherry, raspberry, chocolate and oak. Sweet and sour with good acidity. Very ripe jammy fruit. Decent length. Tannins play hide and seek. But the value of this Baco can't be hidden when discounted $3.00 at my local LCBO. Grip it n' sip it!. July 2013.

Rosewood Süssreserve Riesling 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Rosewood Süssreserve Riesling 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$12.25

Don't let the pale colour fool you. This wine has chutzpah. Vivacious and bright. Good acidity and minerality. Apples and tangerines dominate this off dry riesling. The acidity provides balanced pucker power that off sets the ripe 2010 fruit and added juice. My first sussreserve, and I'll always remember it. Like most good Niagara rieslings, this would match well with Asian cuisine, but great on its own. Grip it n' sip it! (March 2013)

Featherstone Cabernet Franc 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Featherstone Cabernet Franc 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$18.95

This ruby red cab franc has the slightest hint of a purple hue (or maybe I was holding it up against the backdrop of my 1970's drapes). Cherries, spice, pepper and a suggestion of chocolate and oak from its slumber in American barrels. Light to medium bodied. Tannins soften after a breath of fresh air. Finish is a bit short and bitter. Overall, juicy, approachable and food friendly. Sept. 2013.

Muscedere Vineyards Cabernet Franc 2011, VQA Lake Erie North Shore Bottle
Muscedere Vineyards Cabernet Franc 2011, VQA Lake Erie North Shore
Ontario, Canada
$14.75

This lake Erie North Shore Cab Franc is light bodied with some finesse. Red berry fruit (strawberry dominates for me) and tannins are nicely balanced. Just enough acidity to provide the right amount of juiciness and there's a medium to long finish. Freud wouldn't find too many complexes with this patient, but nonetheless a good, well balanced Cab Franc for a reasonable price. Tasted Sept. 2013.

Buena Vista Pinot Noir 2011, Carneros Bottle
Buena Vista Pinot Noir 2011, Carneros
California, Usa
$24.95

This Pinot from Carneros is ruby garnet with garnet edges. It offers aromas of red cherry and red berries along with an earthy character and cinnamon. The palate delivers more fruit, smoke, pepper, oaky mocha and a slight sweetness in a medium bodied frame with medium plus acidity and milder tannins. There's alcohol heat (14.5% ABV) on the very long finish. I managed to procure a 1/2 dozen bottles after the LCBO de-listed this excellent pinot - first big bargain of the year! Jan. 2015.

Maycas Del Limarí Reserva Especial Syrah 2009, Limarí Valley Bottle
Maycas Del Limarí Reserva Especial Syrah 2009, Limarí Valley
Limari Valley, Chile
$16.75

The 2009 is as good as the 2008 (which was a very nice syrah). Dark ruby/magenta. This smokey syrah delivers typical spice and dark berry fruit, along with oak, vanilla and leather. The grainy tannins provide some grip. Good complexity and length. A half hour decanting softened things up nicely, and a grilled t-bone sprinkled with Montreal steak spice brought out some serious schmeck. 90+ so grip it n' sip it! July 2013.

Brancott Estate Letter Series B Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Southern Valley Bottle
Brancott Estate Letter Series B Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Southern Valley
Marlborough, New Zealand
$19.95

The lifted nose of this Sauvignon Blanc bursts rather than rises from the glass. This wine shows spicy grapefruit, peach and petrol, with bracing acidity and tartness and a long finish. A nice viscosity on the medium body mouthfeel. It definitely has some chutzpah and the stuff to age a couple of years. Would stand up well to spicy cuisine. Grip it n' sip it! July 2013.

Keint He Portage Pinot Noir 2011, Prince Edward County Bottle
Keint He Portage Pinot Noir 2011, Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada
$29.95

Almost translucent light garnet Pinot with a slight orange tinge. The nose is mineral, raspberry, nutmeg. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, creamy and the palate offers smoke, minerality, juicy tartness, red berries, lemon drop and faint cotton candy. Juicy acidity provides structure, but tannins have softened. Very good to excellent length. Drinking well now, with short term cellaring possible, but don't wait too long. May 2015.
