Buena Vista Pinot Noir 2011, Carneros
California, Usa$24.95
This Pinot from Carneros is ruby garnet with garnet edges. It offers aromas of red cherry and red berries along with an earthy character and cinnamon. The palate delivers more fruit, smoke, pepper, oaky mocha and a slight sweetness in a medium bodied frame with medium plus acidity and milder tannins. There's alcohol heat (14.5% ABV) on the very long finish. I managed to procure a 1/2 dozen bottles after the LCBO de-listed this excellent pinot - first big bargain of the year! Jan. 2015.
Maycas Del Limarí Reserva Especial Syrah 2009, Limarí Valley
Limari Valley, Chile$16.75
The 2009 is as good as the 2008 (which was a very nice syrah). Dark ruby/magenta. This smokey syrah delivers typical spice and dark berry fruit, along with oak, vanilla and leather. The grainy tannins provide some grip. Good complexity and length. A half hour decanting softened things up nicely, and a grilled t-bone sprinkled with Montreal steak spice brought out some serious schmeck. 90+ so grip it n' sip it! July 2013.
Brancott Estate Letter Series B Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Southern Valley
Marlborough, New Zealand$19.95
The lifted nose of this Sauvignon Blanc bursts rather than rises from the glass. This wine shows spicy grapefruit, peach and petrol, with bracing acidity and tartness and a long finish. A nice viscosity on the medium body mouthfeel. It definitely has some chutzpah and the stuff to age a couple of years. Would stand up well to spicy cuisine. Grip it n' sip it! July 2013.
Keint He Portage Pinot Noir 2011, Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$29.95
Almost translucent light garnet Pinot with a slight orange tinge. The nose is mineral, raspberry, nutmeg. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, creamy and the palate offers smoke, minerality, juicy tartness, red berries, lemon drop and faint cotton candy. Juicy acidity provides structure, but tannins have softened. Very good to excellent length. Drinking well now, with short term cellaring possible, but don't wait too long. May 2015.
Sella & Mosca Riserva Cannonau Di Sardegna 2009, Doc
Sardinia, Italy$17.95
This Grenache is cherry red in the glass, with brick coloured edges showing its maturity. An interesting quaff. It's earthy, has red berry fruit, almost a nib licorice candied sweetness, but the brett is a bit dominant holding back a higher score. Juicy acidity, decent length and some heat. It's quirky character was toned down a bit with decanting. It washed down pizza exceedingly well. Grip it n' sip it! June 2013.
Caparzo Rosso Di Montalcino 2010
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
Medium garnet in the glass. I found the nose a tad shy - it must have seen its shadow. Medium body with cherry, red berry, tomato, a suggestion of vanilla and almond. It has a savoury finish and good length. Tannins are moderate and acidity is tart making it food friendly. A nice smooth rosso but a bit thin, which for me keeps the score below 90. March 2014.
Mission Hill Five Vineyards Rosé 2010, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$15.95
This review is for the 2012. Pretty coral colour. Fragrant, bright, zesty. A very good patio sipper and/or accoutrement for backyard bbq's. Grip it n's sip it for sure! July 2013.
Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier 2012, Chile
Colchagua Valley, Chile$9.95
Light straw colour with the slightest hint of a green tinge. Cono Sur's viognier remains consistent in its quality and a great value. Petrol, white peach, citrus notes, integrated with minerality and lip smacking acidity. A nice viscous mouthfeel. Can't beat the price quality ratio. Paired nicely with a grilled Moroccan spiced chicken breast. Sept. 2013.
Rosewood Süssreserve Riesling 2012, VQA Beamville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$12.25
This is proving to be a consistently decent performer and considering the price, very good value. I enjoyed the 2012 as much as the 2010. This sussreserve shows a slight green tinge as it sits in the glass. Off dry, good fruit in the citrus and apple range, a seam of acidity provides some structure. Nice length. All the elements for a good Niagara riesling (with a little unfermented juice thrown in the bargain). Paired up very well with mildly spiced Thai food. 88-89 points. Dec. 2013.
Big Head Wines Syrah 2012, VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$0.00
This 2012 syrah from the ubiquitous and talented winemaker Andrzej Lipinski's virtual winery is made in the appassimento style (he feels that enhancement can benefit a shorter growing season). It is big, full and complex. Bouquet is floral with vanilla, oak, spices, pepper and dark and red fruit. Palate is equally big with spice, black peppery, vanilla and cherry compote. Tannins add some traction and alcohol is present towards the lengthy finish, but decently integrated. Complex. Drinking nicely now (decant 45 minutes) but will cellar mid term. Love the label. 92+. Oct. 2013.
