Mocine 2011, Igt Toscana
Tuscany, Italy$17.25
An eccentric and idiosyncratic blend to be sure. It has a very fragrant nose. I get perfume, vanilla, ripe cherry and stewed fruit, and a slightly medicinal character. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a smooth entry transitioning to a sour middle and a bit of spice and heat at the end. Moderate acidity and tamed tannins. I like this as a sipping wine. Very contemplative. It taxed my brain but pleased my palate. Feb. 2014.
Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz 2011, Adelaide, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$21.95
A very young and somewhat resinous wine. The nose shows off ample fruit, perfume, menthol and a funky note. Oak is judiciously impactful. Very structured with medium acidity and a medium-full body. Tannic and hot. Flavours of sweet baking spices, black pepper and a touch of bitterness. Very good length. This could use another year to come together. If drinking now, decant for at least an hour. Nov. 2014.
Caparzo Brunello Di Montalcino 2008, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$44.95
Caparzo's 2008 Brunello sits almost translucent in the glass displaying a garnet hue with faintly brick coloured edges. It's an elegant and refined Brunello reflecting Caparzo's style and the cooler vintage. True to form Sangiovese characteristics come through with cherry and red berry notes, anise, tobacco and smoke. The mouthfeel is silky with tart fruit, spice, and chewy tannins that are entering a mellower phase of development. Framed by an acidic backbone, this wine is food friendly. Excellent length. Jan. 2015.
Paxton Mv Shiraz 2011, Mclaren Vale, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$17.95
A dark purple inky, tarry shiraz. Notes of dark fruit, plum jam, pepper, tar, coffee and choca-mocha. Some chalk on the mouthfeel. Good balance with tannins, oak and alcohol mild and in sync, but fruit is pronounced. A good BBQ red but sips well on its own, so grip it n' sip it! Sept. 2013.
Fielding Gamay 2012, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$17.95
This is a fresh cherry red Gamay that is a bit translucent in the glass. On the palate, it is lighter bodied with cherry fruit forward followed by a seem of acidity. A medium finish reveals some spice. Serve slightly chilled. Oct. 2013.
Trapiche Broquel Malbec 2011, Mendoza
Argentina$14.95
Typical dark coloured Malbec with a slight purple hue. Concentrated fruit with gamey, raw hamburger notes and what seems like some brett. On the palate there's peppery spice and a savoury/sweet interplay. Medium to full bodied, creamy, good acidity, milder tannins and nice length. This is very approachable and a great value (particularly while on sale), so stock up to accompany casual summer BBQ fare. 88-89. May 2014.
Villa Ponciago Beaujolais Villages 2012, Ac
Beaujolais, France$15.30
Kudos to Steve Thurlow for the heads up on this lovely Gamay discontinued by the LCBO. What a steal at $6.80 and a perfect summertime red. Red berry nose with peppery spice on a lighter body with juicy acidity. Load up if you can find any left and drink by the Fall. Pair with salmon skewers, chicken and lighter pork dishes. July 2015.
P.L. & J.F. Bersan Chablis 2010
Burgundy, France$19.95
This pale golden Chablis with a slight green tinge has a vervy vibe, fitting the Chablis chard mould. The nose emits freshness, sour cream, citrus, some peach and plenty of minerality. On the mouthfeel there's a medium weight and crisp acidity, making it a fine accoutrement to a wide array of vittles. A good value. January 2014.
Château De Saint Lager Brouilly 2011
Beaujolais, France$19.95
This gamay from Brouilly opens with fresh red berry fruit and floral notes followed by a hint of peppery spice. The mouthfeel edges toward medium body with good acidity and some heat on the lingering finish. Tannins are tame. A good value for a Beaujolais Cru at under $20, but my local LCBO has it marked down to $16. I'm happy to take the last few bottles of their hands. Serve slightly chilled. Oct. 2014.
Lailey Vineyard Canadian Oak Meritage 2010, VQA Niagara River
Ontario, Canada$29.75
Lailey's use of Canadian oak in this Bordeaux style blend results in a very spicy, woody wine that is taking it's time to resolve into balance. Six years in and the wood is still dominant. There's complexity and interesting aromas/flavours of red and dark fruit, nutmeg, cinnamon, cedar, chocolate. It's medium-full bodied with still grainy tannins and very good length. A tad hot on the finish. Still need a couple of years. Nov. 2016.
