Keint He Portage Pinot Noir 2012, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$24.25
This light to medium bodied pale Pinot sourced from 3 of Keint-He's PEC vineyards offers a lifted nose of cherry and red berries. The palate is smooth with more cherry, berry and rhubarb flavours. Focussed fruit, mild tannins, balanced acidity, excellent length make for a lovely finessed wine. Drinking nicely now but could cellar short term. July 2014.
Malivoire M2 Small Lot Gamay 2012, VQA Niagara Escarpment, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
This lives up to the Malivoire reputation for doing Gamay so well. Light crimson in colour with a slight pink hue, the nose is perfumed with a whiff of baking spice, licorice, iodine and bandaid. The fruit is tart in the sour cherry, currant and pomegranate range. Palate is peppery. But it is the mouth watering acidity and chalky minerality that defines this Gamay. Excellent length. A touch of perceived sweetness rounds out the finish offering a counter point to the tart start. An extremely food friendly wine. Try with grilled pork chops marinated in a cider vinegar vinaigrette. Sept. 2014.
Leaning Post Merlot 2012, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$42.00
Here's a beautiful plush Niagara Merlot from talented Winemaker Ilya Senchuk. Making the most of the excellent 2012 vintage, this Merlot shows black cherry, plum and prunes with secondary and tertiary aromas of vanilla, mocha, herbs and tobacco. Nicely balanced with supporting acidity and ripe and softening tannin, the wine is drinking very nicely now. Excellent length. Oct. 2016.
Maison Roche De Bellene Vieilles Vignes Bourgogne Chardonnay 2021, A.C.
Burgundy, France$29.95
A pleasant and affordable Bourgogne from a reliable Maison. The nose opens with white flowers, then orchard fruit (bosc pear and yellow apple), lemony-lime citrus and a mineral note. The palate offers much the same along with a hint of honey on toast not too dissimilar to aged Aussie Semillon. Creaminess suggests lees contact and there's medium plus acidity providing lift and refreshment. The length is very good to excellent. Pair with lemon chicken. Jan. 2025.
Masi Serego Alighieri Possessioni Rosso 2009, Veneto
Veneto, Italy$15.00
Crimson ruby colour. Very fragrant with a fruity nose. Light to medium body with good acidity and tartness. Soft tannins and a lingering finish. My palate plucked a bushell of fruit like sour cherry, raspberry, blackberry, maybe a single blueberry lurking like it wasn't invited to the party but showed up anyway. The acidity stood up up really well to a plate of rotini in a tomato basil sauce. Chill slightly. Grip it n' sip it! April 2013.
Caparzo Brunello Di Montalcino 2011, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$49.95
Showing volatile acidity that blows off with a bit of air, but I'd drink up if you have a bottle or two left. Garnet in colour. Mature nose and flavours in the dried red fruit spectrum, dried violet, savoury notes, cinnamon, soy, and cedar. Tannins are very resolved but a hint of graininess pokes through showing a bit of life yet. Acidity has kept this wine going. The length is excellent. A nice example of mature Brunello. March 2020.
Domaine Durieu Lucile Avril Châteauneuf Du Pape 2010, Ac
Rhône, France$0.00
Strawberry jam, herbs/garrique, nutmeg and some funk. The palate offers more or the same with cherry and black pepper. Tannins are still sticky, decant or tuck away another 2-3 years. Complex enough with good concentration, a decent CdP overall, but not outstanding. Jan. 2016.
Dominio Del Plata Crios Limited Edition Red Blend 2012
Mendoza, Argentina$14.95
Susana Balbo's red blend is very purple (teeth staining purple). It's a pleasant sweetish, oaky, fruity wine with very good length. Dark chocolate prevails on the palate. Tannins have some traction. An approachable BBQ wine that should be widely appealing to enthusiasts and 'gulpers' alike. May 2014.
Hickinbotham Shiraz/Cabernet 2009, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$16.95
Purple ruby. Pleasant berry aromas. Peppery out of the gate (the shiraz leads this dance) and then the cab's mild tannins appear. Overall nice and smooth with a mid length finish. Some heat on the end reflects the higher alcohol content. A nice solo act but it also excelled sharing the bill with italian sausage brochette brushed with an olive oil/balsamic sauce. Grip it n' sip it! April 2013.
Zenato San Benedetto Lugana 2021, Doc
Veneto, Italy$17.95
Intense and pretty aromas of white flowers, orange blossoms, citrus and papaya. The mouthfeel is lovely with a creamy texture (lees contact). More citrus flavours on the palate, ending with an almost bitter herbal and almond skin note so typical of Italian whites. Vibrant and juicy, balanced (although a touch of alcohol heat creeps in) and very good to excellent length. Food friendly for sure. Dec. 2022.
