Château De Landiras 2010, Ac Graves Bottle
Château De Landiras 2010, Ac Graves
Bordeaux, France
$17.25

A nice ruby dark cherry colour. The nose starts with some funky barn and gamey notes then switches to green leaves, leather and oak. The medium mouthfeel starts smooth and builds to a more edgy finish with good length. Flavours of vanilla/oak, cherry cola, black pepper, graphite and other savoury elements. Tannins are present but subdued. Good balance with a seam of acidity and alcohol providing structure and oak dominant but not overpowering the fruit. Approachable now, but a power nap in the cellar wouldn't hurt. March 2014.

Templários Colheita Seleccionada Touriga Nacional/Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Igp Tejo Bottle
Templários Colheita Seleccionada Touriga Nacional/Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Igp Tejo
Portugal
$14.95

Equal parts Touriga Nacional and Cab Sauv. A nicely balanced and pleasing dry ruby red wine. Aromas of dark fruit, meat, vanilla and herbs, followed by similar notes on the palate plus spice and chocolate. It has a velvety mouthfeel. The Cab exerts it's tannic presence with grippiness. The alcohol comes through on the lingering finish (decant 45-60 mins). Great value. Wish I'd bought more considering the price. Dec. 2013.

Cave De Roquebrun Granges Des Combes 2013
Languedoc, France
$18.95

Deep ruby colour. Fairly intense and complex nose of florals, red berry, cherry, blackberry, licorice, pepper, a funky earthy note and a hint of V.A. All three varieties represent'n. The palate offers juicy medium plus acidity, mild tannin. There's a nice freshness and vibrancy here. Very good length. Excellent value. Feb. 2016.

Bachelder Niagara Chardonnay 2013, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Bachelder Niagara Chardonnay 2013, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$24.95

A good vintage in Niagara for Chard, this multi vineyard offering by Thomas Bachelder exhibits a degree of complexity with apple and pear fruit, florals, black licorice and yoghurt. It's fairly rich and creamy in mouthfeel with a hint of tannin, and framed by medium plus acidity. Oak is prevalent but integrated. A touch hot on the finish with excellent length. May 2016.

Rosehall Run Ceremony Blanc De Blancs Brut, VQA Prince Edward County Bottle
Rosehall Run Ceremony Blanc De Blancs Brut, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada
$36.00

A nice little PEC Chardonnay sparkler with very fine mousse, almost frizzante in lightness of bubble but very persistent. Crisp apple, biscuit, vibrant acidity, minerality all co-mingle in a nice package that lasts fairly long on the palate. I paired this with a creamy butternut squash bisque dressed with pomegranate seeds and served with fresh crusty bread. The Blanc de Blanc's acidity was a nice foil to the creamy soup and enhanced the bite of tartness from the pomegranate seeds. The wine's autolytic character made us gobble up way too much bread. Very enjoyable. Jan. 2018.

Château Des Charmes St. David's Bench Vineyard Gamay Noir Droit 2015, VQA St. David's Bench Bottle
Château Des Charmes St. David's Bench Vineyard Gamay Noir Droit 2015, VQA St. David's Bench
Ontario, Canada
$15.75

CdesC's gamay based on Paul Bosc's clone certainly is a straight shooter. Pretty aromatics and rich ripe flavours of cherry, red berry, florals and spice. A sense of sweetness but there's good balancing acidity, little in tannic grip and decent overall length. This can age a bit, but really no reason to when it's so enjoyable now. April 2017.

Lavau Vacqueyras 2014 Bottle
Lavau Vacqueyras 2014
Rhône, France
$25.95

Terrific value as Lavau's Vacqueyras is half the price of many CdP's, but with similar characteristics and quality. Bright medium ruby colour, cherry and dark fruit, meat, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanillin. Well balanced with medium plus tannin and medium acidity, but a touch hot (14.5% ABV declared). Very good to excellent length. Feb. 2018.

A very aromatic nose, with fruit, florals and herbal notes. The mouthfeel is creamy, there's an interesting interplay of flavours including a touch of sweetness, some savouriness, spice and a lemony finish. Significant complexity and length given the price. Excellent value. Dec. 2013.

Maison Chanzy Rully En Rosey 2013, Ac Bottle
Maison Chanzy Rully En Rosey 2013, Ac
Burgundy, France
$21.25

This Burgundy is a nice example of the beauty and intrique that quality Pinot displays and the devotion it elicits in enthusiasts. A nod to new world in that the funky, earthy, shroom that is typical of Burgundy is only hinted at. Rather, the red berry and tart cherry fruit is the focus, with spice (nutmeg, pepper) and a trace of oak (mocha vanilla). It is lithe and elegant conveying medium body on the palate with bright acidity and excellent length. Tannins make but a cameo. Great value. April 2017.

Domain Mega Spileo Red 2010 Bottle
Domain Mega Spileo Red 2010
Peloponnese, Greece
$29.95

This is delicious. A blend of Mavrodaphni and the rare Mavro Kalavritino from from the Achaia region of the Peloponnese (Robinson, Harding, Vouillamoz 2012) which are thick skinned varieties producing tannic wine. In this case, with seven years under it's belt this blend is drinking beautifully now. Floral, dried red fruit, spice, integrated oak (vanillin), juicy acidity and tannic structure. But it's the old world savoury, herbal, dusty, dry, lengthy nature that is compelling. It rocked with pork souvlaki and Peasant (Greek) salad and would be sublime with herb encrusted roast lamb. May 2017.
