Gérard Bertrand Saint Chinian Syrah/Mourvèdre 2009, Ac
Languedoc, France$18.95
With a few minutes in the decanter, this Syrah-Mourvèdre blend opens up beautifully to show a mixture of sweet and spiced fruit aromas followed by a medium weight on the palate. Ample sweetness of fruit balanced by bright acidity to a dry and slightly chalk-textured finish. This really hits the mark and will pair perfectly with beef or lamb over the Thanksgiving holiday. Tasted Sept 2012.
Lan Crianza 2008, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$15.95
Aromas of vanilla extract, subdued dark fruit and hints of leather. The taste explodes with plum skin and cranberry tartness; medium bodied and laced with mouth-watering acidity. The cranberry lingers well into the finish. This one just begs for a food pairing - try it with tapas on the patio as the leaves begin to fall. Tasted Sept 2012.
Clemente Cossetti & Figli La Vigna Vecchia Barbera D'asti 2009, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$16.95
Like Chianti or Crianza Rioja, Barbera is light bodied with a bright, juicy core of mixed fruit that will pair well with a wide range of food styles. This particular example also has a slight roundness on the palate, likely due to very ripe fruit at the time of harvest which takes it one-step beyond the typicity of the style. Serve slightly chilled alongside dried meats, olives, and herbs breads. Tasted Nov 2012
Pierre Sparr Brut Rosé Crémant D'alsace, Traditional Method, Ac, Alsace, France
Alsace, France$16.75
The aroma of strawberries hits you immediately followed by cherries and a toasty roundness in the mouth. Nice, but don’t over chill this one; try it at 10ºC. (Northof9finewine, Feb 2011)
Fonseca Bin No. 27 Reserve Port, Douro Valley
Douro, Portugal$14.95
Here`s a port that is ready to drink. It provides a hint of what one might expect from a much older bottle of 'Vintage Port`. Chocolate hits you immediately in terms of both aroma and taste but there is also a slight muskiness that works quite well. The texture is thick and rich and tastes of over-ripened berries and lingering spice. Fairly dry in terms of port. Great price if you`ve never tried this style. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)
Vincent Girardin Les Vergelesses Savigny Les Beaunes 1er Cru 2006, Ac
Burgundy, France$34.95
Deeper and darker that most Burgundies in this price range; perhaps more like a Pinot from Oregon. Nose of cherry and spice, I found this enjoyable. Medium bodied and quite dry, it tastes of cherry and cinnamon with a hint of spice on the finish. Good now but will also cellar well. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)
Finca Sophenia Reserve Malbec 2008, Tupungato, Mendoza
Argentina$17.95
My experience with the Sophenia Malbec has always been good though I do find that each vintage needs a couple of years in the cellar to settle into it's groove. Dark fruits and smooth tannins with a lingering finish. Enjoy this '08 vintage anytime after 2010
Anakena Single Vineyard Viognier 2009, Rapel Valley
Chile$14.95
Aromas of white flowers and lychee; a hint of sweetness on the palate with a slight grapefruit twist; fairly light body but nicely balanced. This one is good both on its own and with food. (Northof9finewine, April, 2011)
Malivoire Albert's Honour Old Vines Foch 2008, VQA Ontario
Ontario, Canada$24.95
Dark purple in the glass, this wine is very expressive with notes of cinnamon and smoke. Medium to full bodied and silky smooth showing good fruit concentration and a pronounced sweetness on the finish. Very nice. (northof9finewine, March 2011)
Fielding Estate Unoaked Chardonnay 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$14.95
So often, unoaked Chardonnay can be aggressive, sour and edgy (that’s why many producers add oak influence to the equation) but there is a softness here that I find intriguing: notes of pear and ripe red apples; the finish is crisp and clean with a slight mineral quality. I like this one a lot. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)
