Bodegas Lan Crianza 2007, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$15.95
This is a fantastic example of Rioja wine at the Crianza level. Expect aromas of raspberry, cherry, and cinnamon stick with subtle hints of oak influence; silky smooth red fruit and just a touch of spice on the palate with no hard edges whatsoever. Tasted Feb 2012.
Guy Saget Marie De Beauregard Vouvray 2009, Ac
Loire, France$17.95
This off-dry Vouvray is the product of the fussy and somewhat unpredictable Chenin Blanc grape. 2009 was an exceptional vintage in the Loire Valley and the ripeness of the fruit is evident in the weight and notable sweetness of the wine. But balance is the key, and this Vouvray offers a refreshing streak of acidity that completes the package nicely. Tasted May 2012.
Crios Torrontés 2011, Argentina
Argentina$13.95
Floral and interesting stone fruit aromatics help to define Argentina's Torrontes grape, but really it’s the lightning streak combination of citrus and herbs across the palate that capture my attention; your new summer sipper with salads or on its own in the garden. Tasted April 2012.
Domaine Jean Pierre Sève Terroir Pouilly Fuissé 2009, Ac
Burgundy, France$23.95
This is mid-level but reasonably priced Chardonnay from the Mâconnais region of Burgundy. Effortlessly complex with just a touch of oak that blends perfectly with the citrus and mineral elements while no single component over-powers the others. This wine presents you with the option of thinking about what’s in your glass or simply quaffing it down - it really is that good! Enjoy with shellfish or soft cheeses. Tasted June 2012.
Umani Ronchi Montipagano Montepulciano D'abruzzo 2010, Doc
Abruzzo, Italy$13.95
From the Adriatic coast of Italy, this is a shinning example of the potential for organic wine. It’s also only $14! Normally, better organic products run well in to the $30 range. Expect blueberry and blackberry followed by a hint of bell pepper and then on to a cranberry tartness. Juicy acidity and softer tannins will pair perfectly with lunch on the patio: think bbq chicken and pork. The perceived sweetness will keep you coming back for more. Tasted June 2012.
Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio 2011, Igt Delle Venezie
Alto Adige-Trentino, Italy$19.95
Italy’s Südtirol (south Tyrol) region is located at the northern most limits of the Italian landscape and is one of the country’s smallest growing regions. In terms of quality however Südtirol/Alto Adige ranks very high. This Pinot Grigio offers fans of the crisp mineral driven style a taste of something well above average for the variety. Stone fruit on the nose in the form of peach and pear make way for a balance mix of citrus and mineral flavours followed by a clean finish that begs for cream based pasta. Tasted July 2012.
Anselmi San Vincenzo 2011, Igt Veneto
Veneto, Italy$16.95
Aromas of peach, pear and white pepper, this is an Italian white with some body to it. Garganega is the primary white grape in Soave, blended in this example with Chardonnay. Fantastic tastes of tropical fruit and melon linger on the finish. I could sip this all day! Tasted Nov 2012
Finca El Origen Chardonnay 2010, Uco Valley, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$10.95
The wine glistens in the light reflecting both its purity and clarity. The colour is bright yellow with green hues at the shoulders. Aromas only hint at oak influence with more focus on sweet ripe melon and lemon as a prelude to the clean, cool climate mineral texture and balanced acidity. Lovely combinations of citrus and herbal notes on the palate with a touch of creaminess and a slightly spiced finish. There is a degree of complexity here that elevates this wine well above others in the price range. Very enjoyable and a fantastic value. Tasted Aug 2012.
Roux Père & Fils Côte De Nuits Villages 2010, Ac
Burgundy, France$18.95
This will more than suffice as a temping introduction to the fascination behind Burgundy's Pinot Noir. Transparent red hints at a light to medium body while subtle aromas of butterscotch indicate the use of toasted oak. Red fruit and hints of cinnimon constitute the primary bouquet of this village level wine with juicy sensations of raspberry and cherry leading to a dry and slightly chalky finish. Enjoy with pork and baked ham. Tasted Oct 2012
Gérard Bertrand Saint Chinian Syrah/Mourvèdre 2009, Ac
Languedoc, France$18.95
With a few minutes in the decanter, this Syrah-Mourvèdre blend opens up beautifully to show a mixture of sweet and spiced fruit aromas followed by a medium weight on the palate. Ample sweetness of fruit balanced by bright acidity to a dry and slightly chalk-textured finish. This really hits the mark and will pair perfectly with beef or lamb over the Thanksgiving holiday. Tasted Sept 2012.
