In 2009 Tyler founded a free online wine education resource where he publishes his Thoughts, Theory, and Recommendations.

In the pages below, you will find a summary of my tasting notes to supplement much of the written material that I provide. Should I taste a wine and subsequently review that label, I do so because it offers something unique or of interest such as noted varietal or regional character.

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough Bottle
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough
New Zealand
$19.95

This is one of the more popular wines in the Vintages section of the LCBO. And while my personal taste for Sauvignon Blanc gravitates toward the Loire in France, kazillions of people (including my wife) rave about this wine… so who am I to judge? As far as Kim Crawford goes, this edition is slightly sweeter than previous examples showing classic gooseberry, grassy aromas which lead to a racy acidity and a mouthwatering citrus finish. Try it with goat cheese; the two are a match made in heaven. Tasted April 2012.

Messias Grande Escolha 2007, Doc Douro Bottle
Messias Grande Escolha 2007, Doc Douro
Portugal
$14.10

For most of us, Portugal represents Vintage and Tawny Port, the thick, rich and greatest example of fortified wine. But are you aware that the Portuguese also make really good dry red wine? This one is from Douro and is made with the same grapes used in the production of port except it’s not fortified with brandy spirits. Aromas of highly concentrated dark fruit with a hint of dark chocolate precede smooth blackberries accented by black pepper and spice. Try it with prime rib.

Ferraton Père & Fils Samorëns Blanc 2009, Ac Côtes Du Rhône Bottle
Ferraton Père & Fils Samorëns Blanc 2009, Ac Côtes Du Rhône
Rhône, France
$13.95

From the Rhône valley in France; the style is not normally available at the LCBO. Samorëns Blanc is a blend of 60% Grenache Blanc, 40% Clairette. Flowers and tropical fruit notes followed by a medium body and the taste of apples and pineapple wrapped up by a crisp acidity. Try this one purely out of curiosity. (Northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

Kleine Zalze Barrel Fermented Vineyard Selection Chardonnay 2009, Wo Western Cape Bottle
Kleine Zalze Barrel Fermented Vineyard Selection Chardonnay 2009, Wo Western Cape
South Africa
$13.80

This was really nice. Initially, some peach and apple on the nose followed by a touch of vanilla and almond indicating time spent in oak, but on the palate, the flavours integrate nicely. Lovely; perfectly balanced Chardonnay from South Africa. (Northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

González Byass Elegante Medium Amontillado Bottle
González Byass Elegante Medium Amontillado
Spain
$12.10

This is a nice wine to sip before dinner with a variety of old cheeses. Elegante is sherry made in the Amontillado style which means the wine is relatively oxidized. The initial aroma is more of a nuttiness than the typical sherry tang. Soft and delicate in the mouth. Quite nice. (northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

Bodegas Lan Crianza 2006, Doca Rioja Bottle
Bodegas Lan Crianza 2006, Doca Rioja
Spain
$15.95

Yet another fine example of Spanish Rioja. The term Crianza indicates only one year spent in oak and one year in the bottle prior to release of this wine to the public. A deep ruby red colour with hints of raspberry and cherry on the nose; silky smooth red fruit and a touch of spice on the palate with no hard edges whatsoever. (northof9finewine, March 2011)

Cave De Hoen Riesling 2009, Ac Alsace Bottle
Cave De Hoen Riesling 2009, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France
$15.95

Shows aromas of lemon and tropical citrus on the nose while light, dry and crisp in the mouth. Good acidity here (think green apples); sips well on its own or will pair nicely with lighter fare foods. (northof9finewine, March 2011)

Malivoire Albert's Honour Old Vines Foch 2009, VQA Ontario Bottle
Malivoire Albert's Honour Old Vines Foch 2009, VQA Ontario
Ontario, Canada
$24.95

Aromas of smoked meat and stewed black fruit; highly extracted I would suspect. A combination of tart and sweetness with a pronounced acidity that will make your mouth water. Interesting, enjoyable, and one of Ontario's more interesting red wines. Serve slightly chilled. Tasted April 2012.

Kangarilla Road Charlie's Blend Shiraz Cabernet 2008, Mclaren Vale Bottle
Kangarilla Road Charlie's Blend Shiraz Cabernet 2008, Mclaren Vale
Australia
$14.25

What makes this Aussie red so intriguing is not only the great price, but also its sense of balance. There is significantly more in the glass than a simple palate-coating dose of fruit and oak. Expect a combination of bright red fruit and earth on nose with tastes of chocolate covered cherries and spice plus just a touch of heat on the finish. Another wine to side with ribs or burgers hot off the grill. Tasted Aug 2012.

Salomon Undhof Salomon Groovey Grüner Veltliner 2010, Kremstal Bottle
Salomon Undhof Salomon Groovey Grüner Veltliner 2010, Kremstal
Austria
$14.95

A summertime wine; light, somewhat tangy and fun without a great deal of complexity. Lots of citrus flavours to sip with finger foods by the pool. Rather mouth-puckering. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)
