Henry Of Pelham Estate Gamay 2009, Short Hills Bench, Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Henry Of Pelham Estate Gamay 2009, Short Hills Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$11.25

I’ve always enjoyed this light bodied fruit forward red. Very similar to the style of France’s Beaujolais (a satellite of Burgundy), a portion of the juice used in the production of this Gamay is obtained by a process known as 'carbonic maceration’. Rather than crush the fruit, the juice is allowed to ferment inside the individual grapes and after a week or so, they literally burst with flavour. The result is a light, crisp red wine that is dominated by cherry and raspberry. Henry of Pelham’s Gamay also tends to have a very slight effervescence. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Vincent Morin Lacombe Pinot Noir Bourgogne 2009, Ac Bottle
Vincent Morin Lacombe Pinot Noir Bourgogne 2009, Ac
Burgundy, France
$16.95

This wine surprised me and to be very honest, I really didn`t expect much in return. The nose is quite aromatic, showing notes of cherry (typical of Pinot Noir) and some dark plum. The taste is dry with more red fruit and some earthiness. Not bad at all and certainly a good intro to the red wines of what is arguably the greatest wine region in the world. I find that Pinot Noir is more enjoyable when served with food; try this with a pork dish. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

La Posta Cocina Blend 2008, Mendoza, A Laura Catena Selection Bottle
La Posta Cocina Blend 2008, Mendoza, A Laura Catena Selection
Argentina
$12.95

A blend of 60% Malbec with 20% Bonarda and 20% Syrah(shiraz). The colour is purple, not red. Aromas of dark fruit; blackberry and black cherry. Very dry in the mouth with pronounced cherry and currant. The Syrah provides a touch of spice on the finish as well which is nice. Perhaps too dry and tannic straight out of the bottle for some people, I suggest that you decant this an hour or two before serving; it softens nicely with some air. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Bonny Doon Le Pousseur Syrah 2007, Central Coast Bottle
Bonny Doon Le Pousseur Syrah 2007, Central Coast
California, Usa
$22.95

A rather traditional style of syrah. It has an old world feel with earthy notes in addition to the dark fruit and pepper that one expects. On the palate, a medium body and again more of that Northern Rhône feel; not a Cali or Aussie fruit bomb. Try it with a rich herbed red meat dish but let the wine breath for a couple of hours. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Grove Street Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Sonoma County Bottle
Grove Street Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Sonoma County
California, Usa
$19.95

I anticipated much more heat with the whopping 15.4% alcohol factor but this Cali Cab from Sonoma County is nicely put together. The nose is rich with a mix of raspberry, blackberry, and a hint of cinnamon. On the palate, chocolate jumped out of the glass (I love it when that happens) with again, a mix of red and black fruit flavours and a nice spice to the finish. Quite good. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Triade Bianco 2009, Igt Campania Bottle
Triade Bianco 2009, Igt Campania

$12.95

Clean nose with mineral notes and faint citrus. There is just a touch of sweetness but it's not out in front; well balanced with the crisp acidity; black pepper spice tingles on the finish. It's nice. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Fielding Estate White Conception 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Fielding Estate White Conception 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$18.95

Now this one is fun... Fielding wants you to guess what grapes they've used in the blend and then visit their website for the answer. I suggest you play along since not only is it a great exercise, but this is also a lovely wine to taste: Aromas of lychee fruit, pear and just a touch of peach greet you followed by fairly clean acidity and notes of lemon, grapefruit and a hint of vanilla. I really want to tell you what's in the blend but I won't spoil the adventure. (northof9finewine.com, May 2011)

Domaine Le Grand Retour Plan De Dieu 2009, Ac Côtes Du Rhône Villages Bottle
Domaine Le Grand Retour Plan De Dieu 2009, Ac Côtes Du Rhône Villages
Rhône, France
$14.95

You'll never believe this one is an entry level Rhône wine! The nose explodes with black fruit and rich herbs. As it rolls across your palate expect plums, cassis, and an oaky softness followed by an unbelievable spicy Grenache finish. At $13.95, this is a fantastic value. (northof9finewine.com, May 2011)

Zenato Bardolino Chiaretto Rosé 2010, Doc Bottle
Zenato Bardolino Chiaretto Rosé 2010, Doc
Veneto, Italy
$12.95

I enjoyed this. In fact, I'd say it's the best Rosé in the Vintages line-up this weekend. Hints of Strawberries and cranberries with a tangy crisp acidity but there is a creaminess as well. It sips okay on its own but will pair nicely with a picnic lunch. (northof9finewine.com, May 2011)

Michel Delhommeau Cuvée Harmonie Muscadet De Sèvre Et Maine 2009, Ac, Sur Lie Bottle
Michel Delhommeau Cuvée Harmonie Muscadet De Sèvre Et Maine 2009, Ac, Sur Lie
Loire, France
$13.95

This one is wound-up pretty tight with lots going on in the glass. A toasty nose with hints of lemon and grapefruit. On the palate, puckeringly (is that a word?) tart straight out of the bottle though it does mellow after a few minutes in the glass to show a good balance of citrus vs. acidity. The icing on the cake is the spicy finish that kicks in after a few minutes - very cool! (northof9finewine.com, May 2011)
