In the pages below, you will find a summary of my tasting notes to supplement much of the written material that I provide. Should I taste a wine and subsequently review that label, I do so because it offers something unique or of interest such as noted varietal or regional character.

Terres Blanches Sec Muscat 2009, Vin De Pays D'oc Bottle
Terres Blanches Sec Muscat 2009, Vin De Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France
$10.65

From the south of France, this wine greets you with aromas of lemon and orange. There is also a floral note which is very typical of the Muscat grape. Sec implies a dry wine but this one is not overly-so. Serve this alongside lemon chicken to someone who will only drink Chardonnay and watch their expression. A perfectly balanced wine.

Finca Sophenia Reserve Malbec 2009, Tupungato, Mendoza Bottle
Finca Sophenia Reserve Malbec 2009, Tupungato, Mendoza
Argentina
$17.95

This producer is fairly consistent. Good black fruit: plum up front with some sour cherry and smoke on the finish. Fairly full with moderate tannin structure that will add complexity with some age. A bit edgy right now but then Sophenia's malbec always smooths with a couple of years in the cellar. Best after 2013. (northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

Croft Late Bottled Vintage Port 2004, Doc Douro Bottle
Croft Late Bottled Vintage Port 2004, Doc Douro
Portugal
$18.95

Late Bottle Vintage (LBV) is port which is ready to drink much earlier than the traditional vintage port style. LBV has been filtered and/or fined and therefore will not benefit from additional bottle age. At 6 years old, this one is quite rich and smooth offering up chewy dark fruit with a touch of pepper and some heat at the end. The open air did seem to take the spicy edge off within an hour or so.

Abbona Papà Celso 2008, Docg Dolcetto Di Dogliani Bottle
Abbona Papà Celso 2008, Docg Dolcetto Di Dogliani
Piedmont, Italy
$19.75

The nose explodes with dark fruit, cassis, and spice; it's almost too much for my taste but it just might suit yours if you're looking for an aggressive Italian bombshell. On the palate, the texture is bone dry, concentrated and everlasting. This will benefit (and mellow) from a few years in the cellar. Drink after 2013 and pair with a rich meal.

Leth Vineyards Steinagrund Grüner Veltliner 2009, Lagenreserve Bottle
Leth Vineyards Steinagrund Grüner Veltliner 2009, Lagenreserve
Austria
$16.95

A nice opportunity to sample something different. The nose is quite fragrant showing citrus and some tropical notes but I found the taste a bit vacant. It's soft and delicate but seems to lack the personality one might expect. While I did pass on it for a North of 9 'Selection', this wine it certainly worth trying out of curiosity for the varietal character of Grüner . (northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

Domaine Masson Blondelet Villa Paulus Pouilly Fumé 2008, Ac Bottle
Domaine Masson Blondelet Villa Paulus Pouilly Fumé 2008, Ac
Loire, France
$24.95

This is a stunning example of Pouilly-Fume and another clear demonstration of the difference between the old-world and the new. Aromas combine grapefruit and herbal notes but it's not aggressive like so many modern examples of Sauvignon Blanc. Light and fresh on the palate, displaying a good balance of sweetness vs. acidity; paired beautifully with the diver sea scallops and Goat’s cheese brulee with Organic Greens at the April 2011 North of 9 Pairing dinner. A lovely aperitif wine! (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Lingenfelder Riesling Kabinett 2009, Qmp, Freinsheimer Musikantenbuckel Bottle
Lingenfelder Riesling Kabinett 2009, Qmp, Freinsheimer Musikantenbuckel
Pfalz, Germany
$17.95

On the German QmP scale, Kabinett implies minimal sugar though in terms of sweetness, this wine is by no means dry. Nicely balanced fruit and acidity and quite easy to sip on its own or with a variety of foods. I found an interesting red apple taste lingering on the finish. Very nice. Valle Perdido Reserva Malbec 2006, Neuquén, Patagonia Bottle
Valle Perdido Reserva Malbec 2006, Neuquén, Patagonia
Argentina
$19.95

The plums jump right out of the glass followed by a hit of dark chocolate and spice. Softer, when I expected something a bit more complex; seemed slightly out-of-sorts and touch hot on the finish. Might benefit from a year laying on its side. Drink after 2012. (Tasted March 2011, northof9finewine)

Domaine Saint Saturnin De Vergy Bourgogne Hautes Côtes De Nuits Blanc 2009, Ac Bottle
Domaine Saint Saturnin De Vergy Bourgogne Hautes Côtes De Nuits Blanc 2009, Ac
Burgundy, France
$18.95

This one makes my mouth pucker. Lemon tart is what strikes me here but there is also a nice creaminess on the finish which I think saves the experience. Fairly basic Burgundy; enjoy it with food, not on its own. A bit pricey for what you're getting... (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Castillo De Monseran Garnacha 2010, Carinena Bottle
Castillo De Monseran Garnacha 2010, Carinena
Spain
$9.95

A nice fruit forward easy drinking casual sipper with aromas of plum and hints of chocolate. Juicy to taste; refreshingly light with a pronounced blueberry sweetness and the slightest vegetal notes that seem to complete the experience nicely. Tasted Jan 2012.
