In the pages below, you will find a summary of my tasting notes to supplement much of the written material that I provide. Should I taste a wine and subsequently review that label, I do so because it offers something unique or of interest such as noted varietal or regional character.

Jadot Combe Aux Jacques Beaujolais Villages 2009 Bottle
Jadot Combe Aux Jacques Beaujolais Villages 2009
Beaujolais, France
$17.95

For the longest time, Jadot's Beaujolais Villages was the best selling red wine in the LCBO Vintages program.
Expect light to medium bodied Gamay with strong notes of red fruit. It is clean, fresh, and well balanced and will pair well with light finger appetizers. This is a great stand-around-the-island kitchen social wine.

Montecillo Crianza 2007, Rioja Bottle
Montecillo Crianza 2007, Rioja
Spain
$12.45

The term Crianza indicates that the wine has spent a minimum of two years aging and one of those years must have been in oak barrels or vats. This example is deep garnet in the glass showing aromas of black cherry and a faint earthiness. The taste is ‘juicy’ and filled with a combination of raspberry, cherry, and spice with just a touch of mint on the finish. Tasted Nov 2011.

Red Diamond Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Bottle
Red Diamond Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Washington, Usa
$14.15

Washington State Cab ~> Smooth and easy drinking is the best way to describe this one. Some good black fruit and a touch of spice. At 13.5% it`s fairly round on the palate; not terribly complex but then not every wine we drink needs to be a case study. Enjoy this one as a `go-to`wine in your cellar.

Louis Jadot Château Des Jacques Moulin à Vent 2006, Ac Bottle
Louis Jadot Château Des Jacques Moulin à Vent 2006, Ac
Beaujolais, France
$29.95

This is a great transition wine for those tempted by the very unique world of Burgundy’s Pinot Noir. Think of this as Gamay on steroids and expect significantly more weight in the mouth when compared to that of November’s fruity nouveau wines. A very nice mix of sour cherry, raspberry and hints of black pepper. (northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

Charles Cimicky Trumps Shiraz 2006, Barossa Valley, South Australia Bottle
Charles Cimicky Trumps Shiraz 2006, Barossa Valley, South Australia
Australia
$19.95

This will appeal to the new-world/modern over-the-top/jammy preference. Highly extracted; this one is a mouth full. Lots of rich flavours and quite weighty. Rather than Yellow Tail and Fuzion, serve this instead - they'll love it. A bit pricey though. Drink it young. (northof9finewine, Tasted Nov 2010)

Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2009, Casablanca Valley Bottle
Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2009, Casablanca Valley
Chile
$12.95

Fragrant, crisp, and simply delicious; you can taste the cool breeze. Expect a lovely balance between the grassy herbal character and a flint-like minerality combined with lime and grapefruit citrus plus generous acidity to pair with multitude of food styles. Try with seafood, lemon chicken, and spicy Asian dishes. Highly drinkable and not to be missed! Tasted Aug 2012.

Marquis Philips Shiraz 2008, Mclaren Vale, South Australia Bottle
Marquis Philips Shiraz 2008, Mclaren Vale, South Australia
Australia
$0.00

This is wine on overdrive; like a teenager screaming down the backroads, speedometer pegged and stereo cranked in their parent’s new car; any faster and it could all fall apart. At 16% alcohol/volume, I expected something overblown but amazingly, this holds itself together very well. A mix of plums, raspberries, vanilla, and cracked pepper swerve around your palate; there’s heat but not the anticipated alcohol burn for such high concentration. Medium to full bodied and a very modern style but fun to drink at the same time – Buckle-up Baby, we’re going for a ride!

Mcmanis Family Vineyards Viognier 2009, California Bottle
Mcmanis Family Vineyards Viognier 2009, California
California, Usa
$18.95

It’s the same colour as Lemon-Love Fruitopia! There's also a very slight effervescence which settles on the surface and looks like soap scum; the wine is light, simple, and easy drinking, but I do suggest drinking this one well chilled. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)

Yalumba Shiraz/Viognier 2008, Eden Valley, South Australia Bottle
Yalumba Shiraz/Viognier 2008, Eden Valley, South Australia
South Australia, Australia
$18.90

Viognier is a white grape, which makes this Aussie red a touch unusual. Yalumba has blended a very small amount of the fragrant Viognier with their mighty Shiraz, the grape so typical of south Australia. The result is a powerhouse wine which I found a touch aggressive straight out of the bottle. After an hour of breathing time however, the deep inky purple Shiraz began to show its softer side. This full bodied wine seemed to mellow nicely in the glass with some air though make no mistake, while it is very good, it is also a very dry Shiraz and not one to sip on its own but instead, will pair perfectly with a rich red meat dish. Decant 1-2 hours before serving.

Burgo Viejo Grand Reserva 2000, Doca Rioja Bottle
Burgo Viejo Grand Reserva 2000, Doca Rioja
Spain
$21.95

Of the reds I tasted for the North of 9 'Selections', this wine did not make the final cut. That said, the next day, we revisited the bottle along side roast chicken infused with fresh Rosemary and the combination was exceptional. The wine was certainly not bad the first day but with some air and the right food, I highly recommend this old world example.
