Madfish Sideways Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2009, Margaret River, Western Australia
Western Australia, Australia$23.95
This Aussie cab/merlot blend is rather green and bitter tasting initially, but it transforms nicely into something significantly more refined after an hour in the glass. Expect a juicy fruit forward style; a modern effort with pronounced sweetness and hints of oak influence; a touch overpriced i'm sure, but give it a chance before you pour it down the drain. Decant well before serving. Tasted Jan 2012.
Famiglia Bianchi Chardonnay 2010, Mendoza
Argentina$16.95
Not a complex wine but a very enjoyable one. The nose is full of white fruit: ripe apple and pear while the palate is initially quite soft followed by a touch of heat on the finish due to the whopping alcohol factor of 14.5 %. (northof9finewine.com, June 20110
Nicosia Etna Bianco 2009, Doc Etna
Sicily, Italy$13.95
Exotic grape varieties make up this clean crisp blend which shows lime and lychee fruit on the nose; somewhat of a different feel on the palate than expected: very light weight and crisp with just a hint of sweetness. This will work nicely with a variety of seafood dishes. (Northof9finewine.com, June 2011)
Terrazas De Los Andes Reserva Torrontés 2010, Salta
Mendoza, Argentina$14.95
It's the subtle spice that I like! Combine that with floral aromas and a clean unoaked citrus palate and you have the makings of a very enjoyable Argentinian white.
Kurt Darting Ungsteiner Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese 2008, Qmp
Pfalz, Germany$19.95
More sweet and stylish than I prefer from a Spatlese level wine; perhaps even slightly overdone, but still quite enjoyable. Ripe apricot and a sight honeyed texture combine with just enough acidity to hold it together.
Roux Père & Fils Gevrey Chambertin 2009, Ac
Burgundy, France$29.90
There's a lot going on in the glass, that's for sure, but this, and most '09 red Burgundies are not ready to drink just yet. This example, from a very reliable producer is slightly disjointed in terms of tannin structure and acidity and needs to lay down until at least 2013 to sort itself out. Lots of potential here, just give it some time...
Sandbanks Estate Riesling 2009, Ontario VQA
Ontario, Canada$14.95
A simple yet very pleasant casual sipping wine. Aromas and taste sensations of green apple, lime and lemon tart with subtle mineral notes and a clean, crisp level of acidity that will pair well with a wide range of food styles. Tasted Dec 2011.
Majella The Musician Cabernet/Shiraz 2009, Coonawarra, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$19.95
Mom always makes a cherry pie for the holiday festivities and as I raised this wine to my nose that is exactly what I thought of… cool eh? On the palate, the 14.5% alc/vol is well integrated into the medium to full body showing dark fruit, leather and a good pepper spice shiraz finish.
Antech Cuvée Expression Brut Crémant De Limoux 2008, Ac, Méthode Traditionnelle
Languedoc, France$19.95
Citrus and biscuit notes on the nose with a noticeable tartness of green apples across the palate; presumably the result of under ripe fruit. I had hoped for more honeyed tones from the Chenin in the blend but that was not to be found. A pleasing enough wine to ring in the New Year nonetheless and quite fair for the price. Tasted Jan 2012.
Château Moncontour Tête De Cuvée Brut Sparkling Vouvray, Traditional Method, Ac, Loire, France
Loire, France$19.95
Tête de cuvee literally means ‘head blend’, which in this case can be a touch misleading since the wine is purely Chenin Blanc. The ‘blend’ refers to multiple vintages which creates a consistent tasting product from one year to the next (that’s the secret of Champagne as well). They’ve labelled it Brut (dry) but there is a touch of sweetness which is lovely alongside the toasty notes. Nicely balanced and a great finish. At $16, I’d buy several bottles of this to have on hand for drop-in guests. Try it with or without food. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)
