Zenato Valpolicella Superiore 2014, Doc
Veneto, Italy$18.95
A very nice Valpolicella Superiore with good typicity showing sour cherry fruit, cinnamon, vibrant acidity and moderate tannin. Very good length. Nov. 2016
Fuzion Alta Reserva Malbec 2015
Mendoza, Argentina$11.95
Fuzion always offers good value and the 15 Reserve is no exception. There's Mendoza Malbec dark fruitiness with black cherry, plum, prune along with tea and hoisin. Structure is more from juicy acidity than tannin, which is quite soft. Decent length. But there's too much RS making the wine taste still somewhat confected. But hey, for under $10, not bad overall. Good for BBQ and when a crowd is gathering. Aug. 2017.
Cherri Rosso Piceno Superiore 2013, Doc
Marche, Italy$12.75
From the Rosso Piceno in the southern Marche, a Montepulciano led blend with Sangiovese. It's a Superiore, so from the historic sub zone in the southeastern portion of the DOC and with more stringent production rules. Dark fruit (Montepulciano) mingles with black cherry and red fruit (Sangiovese), spice and savoury elements. Vibrant acidity makes this food friendly. Medium tannin, higher alcohol and very good length. It's hot with alcohol burn and not the most balanced wine. Probably won't get better with age, so drink now at the table with pizza, meat and tomato based pastas. Nov. 2017.
Tawse Cabernet Franc Redfoot Vineyard 2013, Lincoln Lakeshore
Ontario, Canada$40.15
This Tawse Cab Franc single vineyard offering from the Lincoln Lakeshore sub-app has a lovely perfumed nose of ripe cherry, raspberry, red florals baking spice and an earthy quality. It is framed by a medium body with medium plus acidity and softening ripe tannin. Balanced with very good to excellent length. July 2018.
Cantina Di Negrar Garganega 2016, Bianco Veronese Igt
Veneto, Italy$8.15
Here's a great value in a lovely aromatic Garganega. White flower, peach, nectarine, slightly tropical. Medium plus acidity, medium body, well balanced and good to very good length. Under $10, can't be beat. It's an IGT so not Soave DOC, but would give many a Soave a good run for the money. Excellent summertime patio sipper. Went quite nicely with creamy curried chicken. April 2018.
Farina Valpolicella 2016, Doc
Veneto, Italy$14.95
Here's a nice Valpolicella showing good typicity for the appellation. Fresh and ripe cherry, spice and pepper, framed by good acidity, medium body and milder tannin. Good length. Not overly complex, but a very friendly table wine. March 2018.
Famille Perrin Reserve Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2018, Ac Rhone
Rhône, France$14.95
The pale lemon almost watery colour belies some heft in weight for this Cote du Rhone Blanc that over delivers. Aromas/flavours of white flower, mandarin, peach, apricot, licorice and a bitter garrigue herbal element. A slight alcohol burn on the very good length. Great value. Nov. 2020
Sella & Mosca Riserva Cannonau Di Sardegna 2018, Doc
Sardinia, Italy$19.95
A reliable Cannonau (Grenache) from Italy's second largest Island - Sardegna. Fairly intense nose of roses, red berry fruit, anise, earthy forest floor, cedar and baking spice. Replays on the palate with vanillin thrown in. Chalky tannins, high alcohol, medium plus acidity and ok length. Offers decent complexity for the price, but depth and length lacking somewhat. Good value while on sale. March 2021.
Reif Estate Riesling 2012, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$13.95
This is for the 2013. Decent riesling typicity with a nose of peach, citrus, honey, mineral and a hint of petrol. The palate is slightly creamy with more citrus, tangerine and honey. There's medium plus lemony acidity and a slight late palate alcohol burn unusual for the 12% ABV. Decent length. A good enough food riesling that would complement lightly flavoured fish, poultry and Asian cuisine. June 2015.
Frisky Zebras Seductive Shiraz, Western Cape
South Africa$13.95
A good value and approachable shiraz that should please a crowd if a large gathering is on hand for a summer bbq. Typical S.A. entry level shiraz with up front spice, fruitiness, not a great deal of length nor complexity, but acceptable as a party red when meat is on the grill. Grip it n' sip it. June 2013.
