Lake Breeze Winemaker Series The Spice Jar 2014, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$18.90
An interesting blend with gewurz showing on the floral nose and viognier on the creamy honeyed palate. Lots of fruit with peach, pear and tangerine. Off dry and spicey and, as such, appropriately branded. A late palate bitterness and slight burn. Excellent length. Paired really well with a dish of spicey Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice). Aug. 2015.
Bougrier Vouvray 2014
Loire, France$16.10
This review is for the '15. This pale gold Chenin displays good Vouvray typicity. The nose shows quince, melon, honey. The palate is off dry, medium bodied with enough acidity to balance the sweetness. A slight bitterness on the finishe with some burn. Very good length. Jan. 2017.
Xavier Muscat De Beaumes De Venise 2017, Vin Doux Naturel, Ap (375ml)
Rhône, France$13.75
Very good muscat based VDN from the Southern Rhone's Beaumes de Venise appellation. Excellent typicity showing delicate but pronounced aromas of soapy perfume and florals, ripe apricot, canned peaches, grape, honey and ginger, along with more tropical fruit flavours on the palate. Sweet, lower acidity, a viscous mouthfeel and pure exuberant pleasure. May 2019.
Heartland Spice Trader Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Langhorne Creek
South Australia, Australia$17.00
Aptly named shiraz/cab sauv blend. For me this wine is all about the complex and fairly intense aromatics with black cherry, cassis, plum, menthol, anise, cedar, spice and black pepper. A bit too jammy for me with softer tannin and a touch hot, but good value at $17.00 and a great deal with the markdown I found at $12. April 2016.
Leaning Post Chardonnay Wismer Foxcroft Vineyard 2018, Twenty Mile Bench
Ontario, Canada$40.00
A lovely chard from Wismer Foxcoft showing nice ripeness of fruit from the 2018 vintage (apple, pear, melon), but framed by integrated oak spice, bright acidity and a slight flinty reductive minerality. A honeyed note and sage like herbal add complexity. Texturally it shines with a lovely creaminess on the palate. The length is excellent. Sept. 2022.
Lighthall Chardonnay 2018, Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$35.00
A balanced and harmonious PEC Chard from Lighthall. Nice interplay between fruit and County saline minerality. Apple, pear, lemon, caramel and a sage-like herbal note. I really like the palate in terms of creamy texture. The acidity is bright and the length is excellent. Highly quaffable. Serve with butternut squash bisque. Jan. 2022.
Channing Daughters Ramato Pinot Grigio 2020
New York, Usa$31.25
I love checking out wines that elicit a range of scores from the pro critics, and as the official arbiter of conflicting scores, I was amped to try this Orange wine. But oy vay, what a conundrum it presents. It scores on complexity with grapefruit, marmalade, poached pear, tea, black licorice, sage, honey, toasted marshmallow and more. Texturally there's some tannin and a viscosity in an off-dry frame. The finish is quite long. The acidity is modest so it's a touch flabby. Some alcohol heat reduces marks for balance. But what a fun adventure from an AVA we don't see much of in these parts.
Château Des Ferrages Mon Plaisir Sainte Victoire Rosé 2020, Ac Côtes De Provence
Provence, France$24.95
Fresh, juicy, fruity rose in the Provencal idiom. Complex primary aromas and flavours of strawberry, watermelon, tangerine, red grapefruit, along with a perfumed floral note, white pepper, herbal garrigue and anise. Dry, with high acidity, a viscous body and excellent length. Interestingly, my tasting mentor had a bottle with similar reductive sulphur issues that Mr. Szabo experienced. Significant bottle variation this vintage, or just too aggressively anaerobic winemaking??? July 2021.
Château Haut Garriga Bordeaux Blanc 2019, Ac
Bordeaux, France$13.95
Great value in a 100% Bordeaux Semillon. Although intensity is muted, it shows complexity in primary fruit aromas with yellow floral, yellow apple, pear, lemon, along with a resinous herbal note, anise and minerality. Juicy acidity makes this food friendly, and there's weight and texture on the palate (likely lees contact). Length of finish is very good. For sure a multi-bottle purchase. Aug. 2021.
Domaine Beau Mistral Vieilles Vignes Rasteau Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2012, Ac
Rhône, France$18.75
A nice mid ruby colour and an exprsessive nose. Quite complex - cherry fruit with herb/garrigue, baking spice, anise, pepper, salami (mourvedre) and minerality. The palate is medium/full bodied with dusty tannins (still young, mourvedre) and excellent length. A sour late palate (mourvedre) followed by some alcohol burn keeps my rating just shy of 90. But very good value nonetheless. June 2015.
