Salomon Estate Fleurieu Peninsula Syrah Viognier 2011, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$19.75
This 2011 Fleurieu Pen Syrah with a splash of Viognier has entered a prime drinking window. Very complex with Syrah typicity being shown through bacon fat and olive along with still fairly ripe moving into dried fruit. Tar, hoisin, and herbal menthol cedar add to the flavours. The tannin have softened with still vibrant acidity married to a full bodied frame, yet it retains a sense of elegance. Length is excellent. Could still age a few years, but no need to wait. July 2018.
Reinhold Haart To Heart Piesport Riesling 2013, Qualitätswein
Mosel, Germany$15.75
Pale gold with a hint of green. A lively orchard nose. Slightly reductive. The mouthfeel is a tad creamy with vibrant acidity. Fruit is pure with tart apple and citrus and a mid to late palate bitterness. Very good length. Shows good riesling typicity and would work well with soft cheese, Asian cuisine and seafood in a creamy sauce. Aug. 2015.
Domaine Gerovassiliou Malagousia Vieilles Vignes 2014, Thessaloniki
Greece$23.95
What a treat. Golden green in the glass. Sweet aromas of pear, peach, melon with a saline minerality. The mouthfeel is thick, viscous. The palate is spicey with more minerality. The frame is acidity with a hot finish. The length is excellent. Unbeatable value. Sept. 2015.
Stoneleigh Latitude Sauvignon Blanc 2022, Golden Mile, Marlborough, South Island
Marlborough, New Zealand$21.70
Very good Marlborough typicity with intense aromas including herbaceous notes, tropical aromas (guava), citrus (grapefruit), and a vague sage note. Some minerality as well. There's a pleasantly creamy texture on the palate with bright acidity and excellent length. Checks many boxes including typicity, intensity, complexity and length of finish, but a hair out of balance with some alcohol heat (13.5% ABV declared) that dials back my score a bit. Nonetheless, a lot on offer especially at such a reasonable price. Tasted Nov. 2023.
Château Des Charmes St. David's Bench Vineyard Gamay Noir Droit 2012, VQA St. David's Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$16.95
Light ruby and semi opaque in the glass. A Cru like Gamay - a varietal that Niagara does very well (although this is a proprietary clone of CdC).The nose first detects an earthy funk (a touch of brett?), then flavours of red berry and cherry fruit, minerality, spicey pepper, smoke and cola. On the palate, acidity has bight and tannins are finely ground and somewhat soft. A touch hot on the late palate and very good length. Sept. 2015.
Hamilton Russell Ashbourne 2009, Wo Hemel En Aarde Valley, Walker Bay
Western Cape, South Africa$25.95
Very nice Pinotage/Meritage blend. Quite youthful still, dark ruby in colour with medium plus aromatics of florals, red and dark fruit, spice, meat, pepper. The palate is savoury and juicy with a yoghurty lactic note. Nice acidic lift balances the flavours and the tannin are ripe and approachable. Excellent length. Great value, but that's nothing new for South Africa, and the quality is to be expected from Hamilton Russell. Jan. 2018.
Roger & Didier Raimbault Sancerre 2016, Ac
Loire, France$31.95
This Sancerre reveals higher intensity aromatics with florals, fruit and a characteristic herbaceous quality. The fruit is apple, pear and gooseberry. A saline minerality finishes it off. Vibrant, balanced, with higher acidity, medium bodied and very good to excellent length. Feb. 2018.
Pieropan Soave Classico 2016, Doc
Veneto, Italy$19.95
Clearly not as profound or sublime as Pieropan's single vineyard La Rocca, but nonetheless an excellent Soave in its own right. Great value here. Expressive lemon, honey, minerality, almond and spice. A pleasantly creamy mouthfeel with bright acidity and excellent length. April 2018.
Creekside Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$15.95
This Ontario SB scores on complexity and length. The nose is reminiscent of a N.Z. savvy while the palate is more Loire. Intense aromas and flavours of white flower, lime, peach, gooseberry, sage and salty minerality. Juicy acidity really activates the saliva glands. My local LCBO had this discounted by 20% making it a steal, but alas only one bottle was left. But still a great value at full price. Jan 2022.
Marchand Tawse Bourgogne Côte D'or Pinot Noir 2018, Ac
Burgundy, France$33.95
A nice sub-regional Bourgogne (Cote d'Or) Pinot from the Morey Tawse-Pascal Marchand negociant duo. opens on the nose with nice florals, then red berry and cherry fruit, savoury umami notes, black pepper and vanillin and chocolate. Juicy acidity and medium tannins provide structure and the length is very good. Tasted June 2021.
