In the pages below, you will find a summary of my tasting notes to supplement much of the written material that I provide. Should I taste a wine and subsequently review that label, I do so because it offers something unique or of interest such as noted varietal or regional character.

Taylor Fladgate Tawny 30 Ans, Porto Bottle
Taylor Fladgate Tawny 30 Ans, Porto
Portugal
$183.00

This is an exceptional effort and consistently outstanding. The deep burnt amber hues of the wine highlight the imminent complexity of the nose and palate. Aromas of fig, raisin, and toffee; the perception of maple syrup on the palate with layers of honeyed richness. It's expensive, but if you can find it, don’t hesitate.

A friend of mine calls this 'Poor man's Grange' and he's not too far off the mark. Power and elegance; it coats your senses with smoke, chocolate, ripe currants, and cassis - but it is the mix of raspberry and black pepper on the finish that wins me over each time. A fantastic wine! Decant before serving. Tasted multiple times and most recently in Sept of 2013

Taylor Fladgate 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Douro Valley Bottle
Taylor Fladgate 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Douro Valley
Douro, Portugal
$71.95

This is very good but it's not Graham's 20 and that's all that goes through my mind each time I sip this tawny. The difference is the weight and smoothness: a slight tang (which fades with open-air) takes away from what could be perfection. Definitely try it, but do so alongside the Graham's and you'll understand what I mean. (northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

Jose Maria Da Fonseca Vintage Port 2003, Doc Douro Bottle
Jose Maria Da Fonseca Vintage Port 2003, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal
$24.95

Yes, the name is a bit of a mouthful, but then so is the wine! Translating the label, this is a relatively new partnership between José Maria da Fonseca, the oldest table wine company in Portugal, and Cristiano van Zellar of Quinta Do Noval port house fame. The two combine a great deal of winemaking tradition and experience with their 2003 Vintage Port, and second only bottling of the style.

Expect aromas of raisins, stewed black fruit and hints of exotic spice; initially quite smooth across the palate with ripe cherries and blackberry, though an interesting element of spicy heat kicks-in on the finish that leaves you smacking your lips in curiosity.

I am rather perplexed by what this is versus what it cost - $20 for a bottle of authentic vintage port is simply unheard of. And for that reason alone, you should probably grab a bottle to enjoy with dessert one night this weekend. Decant before serving to breath. Tasted Jan 2012.

You’ll have to move quickly if you want to get your hands on a bottle of this full-bodied Aussie gem. Port-like qualities here: thick, rich, and concentrated. Black fruit on the nose and lots of cocoa as it flows across the palate. At $24, this is underpriced. Decant 1-2 hours before serving. (Northof9finewine, Feb 2011)

Domaine Louis Moreau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2006, Ac, Grand Cru Bottle
Domaine Louis Moreau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2006, Ac, Grand Cru
Burgundy, France
$54.95

This label finished third at the North of 9 White Burgundy tasting. In terms of Chablis, with its combination of zesty acidity and minerality, this is the classic minimal oak influence style that differentiates Chablis from the Cote de Beaune. It took a few minutes to open up becoming crisp and clean with hints of green apple pastry after some time in the glass. Lovely and lingering on the finish. (Tasted April 2010, Northof9finewine)

Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils Meursault Genevrières Premier Cru 2006 Bottle
Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils Meursault Genevrières Premier Cru 2006
Burgundy, France
$79.95

I strongly believe that the greatest Chardonnay in the world is made in Meursault and this wine fully supports that statement. The nose is breathtaking beyond the literal sense, showing notes of citrus and pear mixed with toasted hazelnuts and honey. One is hesitant to taste the wine for fear the palate may not reflect the perfect aromas...
An intensity greets the taster but it quickly softens to show a balanced, dry, and creamy richness. A stunning wine that will cellar for a decade but you can enjoy it now. Decant 1 hour prior to serving. (northof9finewine, March 2011)

Bodegas Y Viñedos Alion 2007 Bottle
Bodegas Y Viñedos Alion 2007
Ribera Del Duero, Spain
$79.00

I am trying far too hard to like this. It is good, even very good, but to say that it is 'exceptional' is a stretch. Decanted two hours before serving, this varietal Tempranillo needs time to breath. It opens nicely to reveal earth-driven layers and herbal notes. A slight graphite minerality on the palate preludes firm tannins and an uplifting core of acidity. The fruit follows to project a juicy sweetness finishing with a hint of spice. Exceedingly complex and better enjoyed with food than on its own. Dried meats will sooth the tannin structure. Tasted Nov 2012. Best after 2014

King's Court Cabernet Franc Icewine 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
King's Court Cabernet Franc Icewine 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula

$31.70

Now here's a bargain! This wine is half the price of the competition's and its just as good - if not better. In an effort to meet the producer of this amazing dessert wine, I struck-out in search of some high-profile winery but only found a shack in a field and a few industrial looking buildings. Evidently the folks at King's Court spend their money wisely - on the wine. Very well done!

Clos Du Marquis 2005, Ac Saint Julien, 2nd Wine Of Château Léoville Las Cases Bottle
Clos Du Marquis 2005, Ac Saint Julien, 2nd Wine Of Château Léoville Las Cases
Bordeaux, France
$128.85

Yes it was good, but I must question the 55% price increase from the previous year. Clos du Marquis is the second label of the great Léoville-Las-Cases on the ‘left bank’ and this vintage represents the edge of affordability for most who wish to dabble in the fascination of high-end Bordeaux. This is not a fruit-forward wine and those who expect a California style will be disappointed. Bottled tradition and a truly profound wine. Decant 2-3 hrs before serving.
