Aged for 12 months in oak. Concentrated black currant, plum, dark chocolate, vanilla, olive, garrigue, baking spice, oak. Not much acidity going on, alcohol is a little overpowering at 14%, tannins have grip. Long finish of bitter dark chocolate and lavender. Great wine, great value from a great region.

Hidden Bench Estate Riesling 2016, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment Bottle
Hidden Bench Estate Riesling 2016, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada
$24.95

A 2016 Riesling from the Beamsville Bench region of the Niagara Peninsula. This white is the winery's Estate Riesling, organically grown and hand-picked. The tongue can only perceive sugar at a concentration that exceeds 10 g/l. Therefore at 14 g/l, this wine has just a touch of sweetness (off-dry). Aromas of green apple, lemon, apricot, honey. Really bright mouth-watering acidity. Long lingering finish of tart green apple and lemon. 11% alcohol.

Prunotto Barolo 2013, Docg Bottle
Prunotto Barolo 2013, Docg
Piedmont, Italy
$41.95

The nose is very closed and it took 24 hours and some chilling to open up. Some stuff I've never smelled in red wine before such as candied orange peel and citrus. Cranberry, strawberry, roses, baking spice. Smooth and silky with that trademark Italian crisp refreshing acidity. The tannins have a ton of grip. It's a well-balanced elegant wine.

Yering Station Village Pinot Noir 2015, Yarra Valley Bottle
Yering Station Village Pinot Noir 2015, Yarra Valley
Victoria, Australia
$24.95

A 2015 Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia. Aged in new and toasted French oak barrels. Cherry, strawberry, violets, mushroom, cinnamon. This is a light elegant wine with a medium warming comforting finish of red fruit and baking spice. You don't see too much Pinot Noir out of Australia but this was enjoyable and similar enough to a French Pinot at half the price.

Mullineux Kloof Street Red 2016
Swartland, South Africa
$17.25

A 2016 Syrah dominated (94%) blend with 4% Cinsault and 2% Carrignan from Western Cape, South Africa. Medium intensity aromas of plum, blueberries, jasmine, black pepper, black tea, vanilla, slate, smoke, barnyard, wet leaves. Smoky peppery medium length finish. Fresh crisp acidity that keeps the alcohol (13%) under control. There's a lot of depth here. It's a nice blend of old world European styles with modern touches. Great value.

Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir 2014, Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley Bottle
Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir 2014, Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley
Oregon, Usa
$37.95

A 2014 Pinot Noir from Oregon. Typical Pinot Noir with earthy woodsy aromas like damp leaves, forest floor, funky wet shoe. Some sour cherry comes through with dried flowers and corriander. It's smooth easy drinking with balanced acidity, alcohol and light tannins. Pinot Noir is expensive and this one comes in at $35 CAD. Overpriced in my opinion, but Oregon is an interesting up and coming wine region so if you like Pinot Noir this will satisfy.

$32.75

A 2013 red blend (Grenache 75%, Syrah 10%, Mourvèdre 13%, Cinsault 2%) from Gigondas, France. Aged for 21 months in casks and terracotta jars. Tons of cracked black pepper, leather, black tea, beef jerky, licorice. Some black cherry, mint, Asian 5-spice, dark chocolate. Much more on the savory, herbal side than fruit. Long finish of pepper, leather, dark chocolate. The 14% alcohol, mouth-watering acidity, slightly drying tannins mingle beautifully together. Unmistakably Southern Rhone.
