Carabella Dijon 76 Clone Chardonnay 2015, Chehalem Mountains Bottle
Carabella Dijon 76 Clone Chardonnay 2015, Chehalem Mountains
Oregon, Usa
$27.95

A 2015 Chardonnay from the volcanic soils near the peak of Chehelem Mountain, a viticultural area within Willamette Valley, Oregon. Chardonnay is the most neutral of the wine grape varieties, taking on flavor profiles of the soil it is grown in or the oak barrels it is aged in moreso than having its own characteristics. Chardonnay is a cool climate grape (early ripening to beat the frost) and does well at high altitude further south since air at high altitude is less dense than air at sea level, reducing its convective capability and overall heat capacity. This wine was barrel fermented and aged in French oak (1/8 new). Caramel-dipped green apple, pear, herbs, baking spice. The finish is medium to long, of lime and herbs.

Hedges Family Estate Red 2013, Red Mountain, Yakima Valley Bottle
Hedges Family Estate Red 2013, Red Mountain, Yakima Valley
Washington, Usa
$38.95

A 2013 Bordeaux-style blend from the Red Mountain area of south Washington State. (59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec, 2% Petite Verdor, 2% Syrah). Aged for 12 months in 2/3 American oak and 1/3 French oak (31% new). Grapes were destemmed before fermentation (reduces bitter tannin) and malo-lactic fermentation was performed to convert the green apple like malic acid to the creamy lactic acid. The aromas scream out of the glass. Olive, dill, blackcurrant, blackberry, sour cherry, soil, anise, leather, mint, Asian-5-spice, smoke. The finish is endless, of licorice, olive brine and pepper. Mildly tannic and acidic. So many layers and complexities.

Very aromatic. Strawberry jam, plum, black currant, lilac, cinnamon, Asian five spice, toasted pine nuts. This is very oakey. Velvety. Warming at 14.5% alcohol but well-integrated with the acidity. This would make a perfect winter wine. Tannins coat and grip the tongue providing an outstandingly long finish of slightly bitter tongue tingling white pepper lasting minutes.

Peachy Canyon Westside Zinfandel 2014, Paso Robles Bottle
Peachy Canyon Westside Zinfandel 2014, Paso Robles
California, Usa
$30.25

Strong aromas of blackberry and plum followed by thyme, asian five spice, lilac, leather, wet earth. There's a bit of a funk like wet sock, damp basement, or mushrooms. I can't decide how I feel about that part. It's a complex wine with many layers but off-balance (acid is high). Tannins are medium, alcohol high. Finish is long and enjoyable.
