Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012
Veneto, Italy$52.95
Intense aromas of dried dark fruit like raisins and blackcurrant. There's some grip from the tannins, warmth from the 16.5% alcohol, but all nicely balanced with the acidity. Great after dinner wine. You want to drink this.
Kenwood Vineyards Jack London Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Sonoma
California, Usa$35.75
A 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (with 1% Syrah) from the volcanic soil of the Jack London Ranch, located on the western slope of Sonoma Valley in Glen Ellen, Northern California. Aged for 24 months in a mix of French, American, Hungarian oak. Blackberry, blackcurrant, cinnamon, cardamom, mint, earth, hot stones, jasmine, black licorice, leather. The finish is outstanding, of coffee, blackberry, mint with tannins providing just the right amount of grip.
Palacio Del Burgo Reserva 2010, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$29.95
Medium aromas of plum, tart cherries, cranberries, violets. Prominent vanilla, oak, leather, cinnamon, black olive. The acidity is crisp and refreshing. Medium length of baking spice, pepper, thyme. Tannins aren't overly drying, but noticeable. This wine would ideally be paired with food. It was quite bitter until it was decanted for an hour, then it really opened up. Great value for a quality Rioja.
Donatella Cinelli Colombini Brunello Di Montalcino 2012, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$64.95
The aromas are medium and very earthy and herbal rather than fruity. Pine, thyme, anise, jasmine, blueberry, earth, leather. Nicely balanced and refreshing wine with crisp acidity. The tannins grip the tongue for a long finish of pine and thyme. Complex. This one will keep you guessing and interested.
Domaine De La Charbonnière Châteauneuf Du Pape 2013
Rhône, France$44.95
A 2013 Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre blend from Southern Rhone, France. Medium aromas of plum, cherry, violets, thyme, oak, all-spice, cinnamon. There's a warmth from the alcohol but it's nicely balanced with the acidity. Easy to drink and pairs nicely with food. The tannins have grip and are drying producing a long finish of white pepper. Very nice wine.
Carpineto Brunello Di Montalcino 2012, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$63.95
Strawberry, clove, nutmeg, pine, rose petals, orange peel, black licorice, cream. Very astringent. Long lasting finish of orange and nutmeg.
Mullineux Kloof Street Red 2016
Swartland, South Africa$17.25
A 2016 Syrah dominated (94%) blend with 4% Cinsault and 2% Carrignan from Western Cape, South Africa. Medium intensity aromas of plum, blueberries, jasmine, black pepper, black tea, vanilla, slate, smoke, barnyard, wet leaves. Smoky peppery medium length finish. Fresh crisp acidity that keeps the alcohol (13%) under control. There's a lot of depth here. It's a nice blend of old world European styles with modern touches. Great value.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz 2016, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$23.95
A 2016 Shiraz from the terra rossa of Coonawarra, Australia. Aged 11 months in toasted and neutral French oak barrels. Black cherry, blackberry, black pepper, mint, vanilla, baking spice. Finish of cedar and nutmeg. Full bodied, 13.8% alcohol, warm hug of a wine. Fantastic Shiraz and great value.
Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir 2014, Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley
Oregon, Usa$37.95
A 2014 Pinot Noir from Oregon. Typical Pinot Noir with earthy woodsy aromas like damp leaves, forest floor, funky wet shoe. Some sour cherry comes through with dried flowers and corriander. It's smooth easy drinking with balanced acidity, alcohol and light tannins. Pinot Noir is expensive and this one comes in at $35 CAD. Overpriced in my opinion, but Oregon is an interesting up and coming wine region so if you like Pinot Noir this will satisfy.
Olivier Et Lafont Châteauneuf Du Pape 2015, Ac
Rhône, France$38.25
A 2015 blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault. Grown from vines up to 70 years old in rocky limestone and sandstone soils. Candied cherries and cranberries. Lavender, leather, asphalt, cinnamon. Herbal, potpourri warming finish. Full-bodied, not overly drying or acidic. The nose was quite closed so let it breathe.
