Mr. Riggs Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Coonawarra Bottle
Mr. Riggs Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia
$21.25

A 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon from the red soils of the Coonawarra region of South Australia. Typical of Australia the aromas jump out of the glass. Ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, mint, violets, vine leaf, green bell pepper, cedar, licorice. There's a salty minerality going on. Acid and alcohol working in harmony. Tannins aren't overly intrusive but are felt during a medium to long finish of blackberry mint. This is a great example of the region and stellar value.

Kilikanoon Baudinet Blend Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro 2014, Clare Valley, South Australia Bottle
Kilikanoon Baudinet Blend Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro 2014, Clare Valley, South Australia
South Australia, Australia
$29.95

A 2014 Rhone-style GSM blend from Clare Valley, Australia. Like many Australian wines I've had, you can smell this from across the room. The most prominent aroma is barnyard and wet earth that faded a tad with time. Once past that, juicy strawberry, roses, smoke, baking spice, black pepper. The tannins are low to medium with a medium finish of black pepper and licorice. This wine is like a comforting hug with the warmth of the alcohol, spicy black pepper and fresh acidity. There's complexity here.

Xavier Châteauneuf Du Pape 2015, Ap Bottle
Xavier Châteauneuf Du Pape 2015, Ap
Rhône, France
$45.75

65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre. Medium intensity aromas of blueberry, blackberry, lavender, black pepper, black tea, cinnamon, leather, potting soil. The tannins are not too drying but produce enough grip for a long warming finish of slightly bitter coffee and cinnamon. This wine is juicy, mouth watering, warming and spicy. Complex and fun to drink. Acidity and alcohol nicely integrated without being dominant. Great wine.

$31.95

A 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (91%) with Merlot (9%) from Margaret River, Australia. Cherry, cranberry, blackcurrant, vine leaf, mint, violets. Evidence of oak aging with scents of vanilla and cloves. Tannins are medium, acidity is refreshing, but the alcohol is a little hot. The finish is looooong with juicy tart cherry, dried herbs and vanilla.

Château Tronquoy Lalande 2012, Ac Saint Estèphe Bottle
Château Tronquoy Lalande 2012, Ac Saint Estèphe
Bordeaux, France
$46.75

A 2012 red from Bordeaux in the commune of Saint-Estephe on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Left bank wines are more Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, while right bank wines favor Merlot. Since 2012 produced terrible weather for Bordeaux, many left bank wineries put more Merlot in their blends than the more finicky Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is 57% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Dill, olive brine, black tea, beets, clove, leather, sour cherry. Smooth wine with grippy tannins, high acid, and a salty dill finish. What a wine.

Grown at the foothills of the Andes mountains in the Maipo Valley and aged 16 months in French oak barrels. Strong aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, graphite, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, baking spice, oak, potting soil. Warming lingering finish of mocha and spice with some drying tannin. A California Cab of this quality is double the price.

Super aromatic like most Australian wine. Lots of vanilla. Mint, ripe blueberry, blackberry, baking spice, black pepper, smoked meat, licorice, orange rind. Tannins really grip the tongue. Drying. Very long finish of orange rind, licorice. This is a sticky chewy 14.5% alcohol wine but you wouldn't know it.

Colomé Lote Especial El Arenal Malbec 2016, El Arenal, Calchaquí Valley Bottle
Colomé Lote Especial El Arenal Malbec 2016, El Arenal, Calchaquí Valley
Chile
$29.95

A 2016 Malbec from the province of Salta, Argentina made from grapes grown at the highest altitude in the world at 2,700 meters. These vines experience some of the most extreme conditions vines can endure resulting in concentrated and intense flavors. The aromas are earthy, mushroom, potting soil which I often get with Malbec. But where many Malbecs stop there, this one has a whole other side once you taste it. Blackberry jam, flowers, velvety milk chocolate, vanilla, salt, baking spice. 14.5% alcohol hidden away behind this sticky chewy velvety salty wall with a long finish of bitter dark chocolate and spice. Tannins are slightly drying but silky.
