Enrico Serafino Barbaresco 2014 Bottle
Enrico Serafino Barbaresco 2014
Piedmont, Italy
$20.50

A 2014 Barbaresco from Enrico Serafino vineyards, DOCG certified. Medium aromas of sour cherry and strawberry. This is mostly dominated by dried flower petals, thyme, anise, damp forest floor. Tannins are medium producing a medium length finish of bitter potpourri. The acid and alcohol were at first too prominent but once the wine was chilled a little they blended in better.

Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Sonoma County Bottle
Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Sonoma County
California, Usa
$44.95

A 2015 Cab Sauvignon from Beringer. This is their premium cab. There's about 5% each of merlot, cab franc and petit verdot in here. Strong aromas of black fruit (plum, blackberry), brown sugar, vanilla, star anise, thyme. This is creamy, buttery. The acid and tartness are absent. The tannins have a solid grip producing a lingering finish of white pepper. Strongly recommended. Decant. It was even better the next day after opening.

Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Bottle
Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$19.95

Medium to strong aromas of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, vanilla, milk chocolate, fresh cut jasmine, mint, tomato leaf, graphite, baking spice, oak. Acidity and alcohol perfectly balanced generating a pleasant warmth. Tannins are medium providing some drying and grip to the tongue toward a long excellent finish of mild pepper and dried herbs. This is complex and well-integrated wine. High quality/price ratio.

Trapiche Broquel Malbec 2016 Bottle
Trapiche Broquel Malbec 2016
Mendoza, Argentina
$14.95

Grown at high altitude and aged for 15 months in oak. Broquel means shield and is the Trapiche premium Malbec not to be confused with their entry level $10 Malbec. Medium aromas of mushroom and forest floor dominate. Once you taste it, juicy plum, dried flower petals, oak, mild spice like pepper and cinnamon, chocolate, coffee. The finish is pretty long with coffee and mild spice. Tannins have grip. The acid is under control but you start to feel the heat from the 14% alcohol the more you drink. Great bang for your buck.

Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Margaret River, Western Australia Bottle
Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Margaret River, Western Australia
Western Australia, Australia
$24.95

A 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 14% Malbec from Margaret River, Australia. Aromas are weak to medium. You really gotta get in there. Plum, blackberry, lavender, mint, dried herbs. The finish is medium to long but has an annoying earthy mushroom wet shoe component. It's minimal but nags at you. This is heightened by a tart acidic aftertaste. The tannins are medium, alcohol high at 14% but well-integrated. This is aged for 13 months in 20% new French oak, but I couldn't tell. I think this would be a lot better coupled with food to cut the tartness. It's an entry level red for this winery at $26.95 (LCBO). It's a solid Cabernet Sauvignon for the price but you could do better in South America.

Rutherford Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Napa Valley Bottle
Rutherford Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Napa Valley
California, Usa
$39.95

A 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend from the famed Silverado Trail in Napa Valley, California. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, 2% Petite Sirah, 1% Merlot. Aged over 12 months in French and American oak. The year 2015 was very hot and dry in California, which produced very ripe (jammy) and small (concentrated flavors) grapes and wines. This one has prominent vanilla from new oak barrel aging, blackberry jam, baking spice, cedar, violets. This is a smooth smooth wine. No overt acidity, tannin, bitterness.

Parfum De Schistes Faugères 2016, Ap Bottle
Parfum De Schistes Faugères 2016, Ap
Languedoc, France
$18.25

A 2016 red blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache from the village of Faugeres in the region of Languedoc that borders the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France. This village is known for its mostly schist-containing soil, a metamorphic rock composed primarily of slate. Wild lavender, thyme and rosemary grow and mingle with the grape vines in this region and their scents get on the grapes themselves, perfuming these wines. You also get cranberry, strawberry, violets, black pepper, baking spice. Leather and licorice on the finish. Highly enjoyable and warming. Great winter wine.

Bastide Sobirana Lieu Dit La Colomine 2015, Ap Côtes Du Roussillon Bottle
Bastide Sobirana Lieu Dit La Colomine 2015, Ap Côtes Du Roussillon
Languedoc, France
$18.95

A 2015 blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Carrignan from the Languedoc region of Southern France on the Mediterranean coast. Aged four months in concrete casks. The lack of oak influence really lets the grapes and soil they were grown in come through. This smells like blossoming flowers and wild herbs and pine. Some sour cherry, cranberry, leather, nail polish. The finish is bitter orange peel. The bitterness is a little over the top, but acids are vibrant and refreshing.
