Marqués De Riscal Reserva 2005, Rioja
Spain$24.75
Beyond the golden threads is a very nice Reserva. A vibrant ruby colour with bricking at the rim. Nose of dried red berry fruit, tobacco, saddle leather, and root vegetation. The medium+ bodied palate has a great balance. Of acidity, fine silky tannin, and warmth. Flavours of stewed red fruits with a touch of cigar and game. Long-lived, pleasant finish. Feb 2011.
Mezzomondo Negroamaro Salento 2009, Puglia
Puglia, Italy$8.95
A youthful nose of blackcherries. The palate has firm acidity, fine tannins, and a medium body. Blackfruits and cracked pepper for flavours and medium length. Straightforward and great value. Feb 2011
Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough
New Zealand$17.45
This wine has a balanced nose of half lime zest and half botanical, reminiscent of dry green grass and chicory. The lively, medium-weight palate has the refreshing acidity of lime and a hint of crisp green apple. The finish is tart but not off-putting - the fruit tended to be shorter-lived and the vegetal characteristics predominated. (Jan 15, 2011)
Anne Boecklin Pinot Gris Réserve 2007, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$17.95
Vibrant gold colour. Nose of red apple, brown pear, tea, and a touch of a blue cheese. The off-dry palate features applesauce, a bit of honey and tropical notes. Has a heavier body and pronounced length. Could hold but probably best for now. Jan 2011.
Domaine Eugénie Carrion Chablis 2009, Ac
Burgundy, France$19.95
Youthful nose of green apple, lemon rind, with a touch of flint. Firm acidity balanced with white grapefruit, apple, and a pleasing stony finish of good length. Great value. (Jan 19, 2011)
Gabriel Meffre Laurus Gigondas 2007
Rhône, France$30.00
A very extracted, deep ruby colour, and showing a hint of garnet. Has a developing nose of dried black and red fruits, dates, and sweet oak spices. Velvety tannins, black cherry, and a bit of cracked pepper. Has a meaty sensation on the medium-heavy body. The alcohol, although high, is integrated. Great length. Apr 2011
