Domaine Drouhin Arthur Chardonnay 2008, Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley
Oregon, Usa$19.90
Medium intense with notes of fresh pineapple and lemon, with barrel-aged caramel and vanilla characters. Medium-full body with structured acidity. Great length, with a juicy pineapple and peach finish. Nov 2012
Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2007
Veneto, Italy$50.95
Deep ruby colour. Intense rasinated nose of figs, chocolate, and dark plum. Lush palate, almost off-dry and with an elixir like quality, in part to the 16.5% alc. Soft tannin and with a little acidity for structure. Tasting of the luscious fruits along with cocoa and aniseed. Extensive length. Oct 2012.
Domaine De Riaux Pouilly Fumé 2009, Ac
Loire, France$21.95
A very determined expression of sauvignon blanc that shows off the dry grass, lemon and green apple on the nose. The methoxypyrazine compounds that give the perception of nettle or bell pepper become more pronounced as the wine has time to breathe. Structured acidity, in balance with the alcohol and flavours. Lemon-lime, green pepper, and herbaceous. Good length. Apr 2011.
Pierre Gaillard St. Joseph 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$22.15
Classy old-world charactered syrah. Deep ruby with a ruby rim. A developed nose of dried black fruits, pepper, and prosciutto. There was a dark floral element that added to the elegance. The palate has soft tannins and full body. The meaty and leathered flavours come through most prominently and the finish is pleasingly tart. Generous length. Apr 2011.
Pfeffingen Scheurebe Spätlese 2008, Qmp, Ungsteiner Herrenberg
Pfalz, Germany$19.95
A developing nose of intense apricot, peach, and honeyed ripeness. The palate is of medium sweetness, has structured acidity, fuller body and intense flavours of cantaloupe and apricot, with a hint of ginger spice and orange pith. The finish is long lived. (Feb 2011)
Grant Burge Miamba Shiraz 2010, Barossa
South Australia, Australia$19.95
A full-bodied purpled style with blackberry jam, black cherry, hints of clove and black pepper. The palate has light acidity and grippy tannin. The density of fruit hints imparts perceived off-dry sweetness. Nice length with a dark chocolate finish. Nov 2012
Dante Rivetti Bricco Riserva Barbaresco 2004, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$38.35
Garnet in colour with tawnied rim. Generous nose of dried fruits, strawberry, caramel, with sweet cinnamon and nutmeg spices. The palate is medium-bodied and has grippy tannins (especially sensed in the finish). Dried fruits, toffee, cinnamon, pecan flavours. Generous length. Lay it down a while or serve with some protein to mop up the tannins. Feb 2011.
Sánchez Romate Npu Amontillado Jerez
Andalusia, Spain$18.95
Medium amber colour. Intense nose of fig, brown sugar, marzipan and antiqued wood. The palate is dry, and beautifully balanced. Flavours of roasted, smoky nuts. The finish is long-lived with a savoury, lighter soy sauce note. Would pair wonderfully with savoury styles of Asian fare. Mar 2011.
Bodegas Lan Reserva 2007, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$21.95
Medium ruby colour with a jammy strawberry, sundried olive and earthy nose. Medium-full body with a good acidic structure and soft tannin. The fruit translates through and there is a touch of mincemeat. Great length and well balanced. Sept 2012
Castello Di Neive Barbaresco 2009, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$19.80
Medium-pale garnet in colour. Still restrained because of its youth, but nonetheless developing with a mixture of red cherry, saddle leather, rosebud, rhubarb and savory spice. The acidity lift the body to a medium-light weight and the tannin is still coarse – typical of a nebbiolo. Good length. Decant for an hour if enjoying now, or hold for the next 5 years as it is likely to improve. How can you beat this pricepoint?
