A lover of everything related to wine!
IT professional in the software/film industry, pianist, DJ, electronic music producer, figure skater...all these activities keep Monika busy. Her real love, however, is wine. She has completed the Advanced level with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) but has now decided to study wine making through the distance program at UC Davis California starting in January 2012. She also has a blog where she shares her adventures to various wine regions and events. Yummy wine made from yummy grapes!

Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha 2009, Do Campo De Borja

For the grenache lovers out there, you'll enjoy this example. It's a hefty red: dry, supple fruit with that typical garrigue aroma, some heat on the finish with lots of spice that pops out to the forefront. A nice wine for just under $20.

Trimbach Riesling 2009, Ac Alsace

From an excellent producer with deep roots in the region, this riesling from Alsace has lovely acidity and mouth-puckering tartness. Delicious flavours of yellow apple and citrus. Good finish. Tasted September 2012.

An enjoyable white Bordeaux for a decent price. Lovely stone fruit flavours, noticeable oak with a bit of grapefruit rind. I enjoyed it. A nice "Pessac-Leognan" alternative that won't break the bank.

Lovely aromas of white peach jump out of the glass. This Riesling is quite tart bringing a hint of sweetness along for the ride. Approachable and affordable. A pleasant introduction to this virtual Ontario winery. Tasted September 2012

Boutari Grande Reserve 2007

Coming to us from Greece, this red offers so much for the sub $20 range. Herbal, spice, dried berries, and tomato tickle the nose. Light and dry on its feet, it unfolds nicely on the palate with earthy tones and licorice. This Xinomavro-based wine has a very good length that ties everything together, leaving an excellent lasting impression. Great value. Tasted February 2013.

Mineral driven with zesty lime and grapefruit. More on the fleshy side with only slight hints of grass. This sauvignon blanc is a good example of a more moderate, less pungent style. Good length.

Domaine Saint Pierre Vacqueyras 2009, Ac

This is concentrated example from the southern Rhone. Ripe berry fruit, garrigue, and forest floor leap out of the glass. The nose and palate are both very inviting. With firm tannins, sweet fruit hangs after the finish mixing elements of both savory and sweet quite nicely. Tasted February 2013.

Flat Rock Riesling 2012, VQA Twenty Mile Bench

From hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed fruit. Arrested fermentation yields this charming Riesling from the Twenty Mile Bench. Off-dry, offering plenty of ripe peach, citrus, and underlying fresh acidity. Approachable with good length.
