Château De Montfaucon 2019, A.P. Lirac
Rhône, France$24.95
A very good Lirac with all the expected herbal/peppered dark fruit that one would expect from the south Rhone. Yet, I found the wine a bit hot (15% abv) and rather angular and austere. Not sure that age will sort this out. Certainly not up to the '16 in my view. Maybe give it another year and hope? Tasted Dec 2023.
Goretti Le Mura Saracene Montefalco Rosso 2018, D.O.C.
Umbria, Italy$21.25
Dark cherry, plum, a touch of prune and (like David said) a hint of marzipan. Tannin is noted but not overbearing. The oak really does not stand out to me at all.....just a really nice, balanced wine. BTW, the remaining 15% is indeed Sagrantino (according to the Goretti website). Tasted Apr 2023.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$19.25
Such lovely balance in this cab from Wynns. Bright fruit, perfectly ripened with nary a hint of going over the top. Oak is use judiciously and the tannin is so smooth that you hardly notice. While drinking now, there is certainly the stuffing to hold a few bottles for 5+ years. Very nice. Tasted JUly 2022.
Malivoire Estate Grown Chardonnay 2020, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada$21.95
This usually reliable, well-priced chardonnay seems a step below it usual quality. Certainly nothing truly wrong with the wine, it just seems rather light in flavour and character in this excellent vintage. A bit forgettable I'm afraid to say. Perhaps an off-bottle? Tried over 2 nights (Oct 2022).
Coudoulet De Beaucastel Côtes Du Rhône 2019, Ac
Rhône, France$29.95
Picking up on sale at $24, this is a superb Cotes du Rhone, obviously far superior to the generic CdR labelling that it is required to use. But wine lovers have known about this bottling from the Perrins for many years, hence the higher (and fully justified) price compared to other CdR-lablled wines. Fine to drink now, but probably better with another 12-24 months in bottle. Tasted Dec 2022.
Lafage Cayrol Vieilles Vignes Carignan 2019, I.G.P. Côtes Catalanes
Roussillon, France$19.95
Good intensity and depth here from this old vines Carignan. Dark fruit accented with wild herbs, all bundled up with taut tannin and bright acidity. I think that this is still a bit too young- best to hold another 12-18 months. Tasted March 2022.
Clos De Luz Massal 1945 Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Almahue, Do Valle Del Rapel
Rapel Valley, Chile$21.95
Very solid cab sauv, with virtually no oak influence. Still fairly pronounced tannin and bright acidity. Complex and long finishing. Very good now, but I suspect better in another 12-18 months. Tasted March 2022.
Barone Ricasoli Rocca Guicciarda Riserva Chianti Classico 2018, Docg Tuscany
Tuscany, Italy$20.95
Decent if unexciting CCR. Seems a little middle of the road, without the vibrant flavours of the '15. Better with food. Tasted June 2023.
Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo 2018, Igt Toscana
Tuscany, Italy$34.95
Modern Sangiovese (aka super Tuscan), but without losing its Tuscan identity. Complex, intense, with oak dialed in very nicely. Crisp acidity and young tannin are noted on the finish. I feel like this could use another 12-18 months mellow a bit. Nice indeed. Tasted Aug 2022.
Famille Perrin Les Christins Vacqueyras 2018, A.C.
Rhône, France$24.95
Solid, well made Vacqueyras here from the ever reliable Perrin family. Rich, ripe, yet balanced with dark fruiit, herbs, and a hint of olives. Drink now or hold a few years. Tasted May 2022.
