Château Chapelle D'aliénor 2015, Ac Bordeaux Supérieur
Bordeaux, France$21.95
Decent, if unexciting Bordeaux Supérieur. Thankfully, the fruit takes center stage with no interference from oak. Unfortunately, some significant bitterness emerges on the finish which detracts.
Overextracted? Tasted Nov 2020.
Feudo Montoni Lagnusa Nero D'avola 2019, Sicilia D.O.C.
Sicily, Italy$19.75
Red fruit dominated flavour profile along with a few hints of this and that,,,,,really cannot place those flavours but they sure add some interest. Tannin is manageable at this point but another year or two would nice. Picked up one bottle at $19.75, another at $15.85. Discounts in this inflationary environment are welcome, esp when its good wine, Tasted Nov 2022.
Falernia Gran Reserva Syrah 2017, Valle Del Elquí
Elquí Valley, Chile$16.95
re-tasted Nov 2023 with consistent notes.
The inky colour give the first hint of what to expect. This is a big, in your face, bold syrah. Super-ripe black fruit, black pepper, spice, cured meat. Not much finesse or subtlety, but this is silky smooth and quite delicious. You would be hard-pressed to find a better wine for $17. Impressive. Tasted Nov 2022.
Il Molino Di Grace Chianti Classico Docg 2016
Tuscany, Italy$21.95
Excellent Chianti Classico from Molino di Grace. The red fruit leans a bit more to the sweeter cherry fruit than sour cherry but this is Tuscan through and through. I am not sure if this is destined for long ageing, it seems to be in a fine place right now. Excellent value at $22, Tasted Nov 2022.
Alta Yarí Gran Corte 2019, Gualtallary, Valle De Uco, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$24.75
It is dark, And a bit tannic, Concentrated, intense, some pleasant herbaceous from the Can franc, ripe yet there is a freshness about this wine. Very good, but my feeling is that this could use another year or two to mellow, Decant if drinking now. friends, BTW, the bottle is stupidly heavy - why? Tasted Oct 2023.
Famille Perrin Les Christins Vacqueyras 2018, A.C.
Rhône, France$24.95
Solid, well made Vacqueyras here from the ever reliable Perrin family. Rich, ripe, yet balanced with dark fruiit, herbs, and a hint of olives. Drink now or hold a few years. Tasted May 2022.
Gattavecchi Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2018, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$30.95
I wish that we would see more Vino Nobile at our beloved Vintages, so when one comes along, I am usually interested. This particular wine is very good, just falling short of excellent in my view. Savory red fruit with hints of herbs and even some light medicinal notes. Still fairly firm with good acidity yet just lacking that certain something, Now to 2025 or so. Tasted Feb 2023
Chateau Du Gazin Canon Fronsac 2018, A.C. Fronsac
Bordeaux, France$21.25
Ripe and almost lush, soft and cuddly like a teddy bear. A solid right-banker if a little faceless. I'd say that this is near or at its peak, I see little to be gained by holding this for an extended period of time. Tasted May 2023.
Laberinto Cenizas Mezcla Tinta 2018, D.O. Colbún, Valle Del Maule
Maule Valley, Chile$20.75
Excellent Chilean red, with lovely balance between the fruit, minimal oak intervention, tannin and acid. Great complexity and length and I like the hints of herbs. Outstanding value. Tasted May 2023.
M. Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2016, Ac Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Latour De France
Roussillon, France$26.95
Another superb red from Chapoutier, darkly fruit with notes of wild herbs and scrub brush and even a hint of licorice.
A bit closed aromatically at first (some vigorous decanting helped), this seems a bit less opulent and more structured than the similarly priced L'esquerda (which is made from grapes from a different village), but this is a superb red in any case. Drink now through 2024. Tasted March 2020.
