Quinta De Ventozelo Reserva Tawny Port, Doc Douro Bottle
Quinta De Ventozelo Reserva Tawny Port, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal
$12.25

Typically sweet, with notes of dried fruit, raisins, and hints on nuts. Smooth and approachable, with decent acidity to balance the sweetness. As Mr Lawrason notes, do chill it a bit. Very nice value, just what the doctor ordered for a cold February evening!. Tasted Feb 2013.

Château Rahoul 2010, Ac Graves Bottle
Château Rahoul 2010, Ac Graves
Bordeaux, France
$29.95

At almost 11 years of age, the Graves is in a very good place. Fruit is still very much alive, tannin still firm (in a nice way), and the oak is so nicely integrated that is goes unnoticed. Perhaps not quite the complexity and finish of more expensive Bordeaux but immensely enjoyable wine. Drink now, but surely no rush either. Tasted May 2021.

Cave De Roquebrun La Grange Des Combes Saint Chinian Roquebrun 2010, Ac Bottle
Cave De Roquebrun La Grange Des Combes Saint Chinian Roquebrun 2010, Ac
Languedoc, France
$18.95

Dark, rich blackberry fruit, with prominent notes of herbs, meat, and pepper. Good structure, though it seemed to me to be quite approachable now. A red loaded with regional character. Tasted April 2013.

Fattoria Di Basciano Il Corto 2009, Igt Colli Della Toscana Centrale Bottle
Fattoria Di Basciano Il Corto 2009, Igt Colli Della Toscana Centrale
Tuscany, Italy
$22.75

Impressive concentration and density to this Sangiovese-dominated red. Red cherries, hints of earth and some vanilla from oak ageing. To me, this is a modern take on a tradional model....a wine that hasn't lost sight of its Tuscan roots. Drinking nicely now, but another year or two should see this mellow a bit further. Tasted Sept 2014.

Domaine Saint Gayan Gigondas 2009, Ac Bottle
Domaine Saint Gayan Gigondas 2009, Ac
Rhône, France
$21.25

A very ripe Gigondas, that verges on but does not quite stray into overripeness. A near Amarone-like 15% goes, for the most part, unnoticed (on the palate, that is, I'm sure you'd feel it by the third glass). Flavours are typical of the region, with dark berry fruit, hints of black pepper and notes of local herbs. Tannin Is quite silky, lending this to enjoyable current consumption (thought I'm sure it can hold a more years). Nicely done indeed. Tasted March 2015.

Montirius Garrigues Vacqueyras 2010, Ac Bottle
Montirius Garrigues Vacqueyras 2010, Ac
Rhône, France
$27.00

A solid, well-made Vacqueyras, significantly better than the '09 I tried last week, which must have been an off-bottle. Dominated by smooth ripe red fruit (grenache), this red is actually quite approachable and at its peak right now. It doesn't seem to have as much of that South Rhone character (garrigue, black pepper) as other reds from the region (or even from their own Le Clos bottling) nor the depth of the best wines in the region (hence the sub-90 pt score), yet the wine is certainly very delicious. Drink now or over the next couple of years. Tasted Nov 14/14.

Rocca Di Castagnoli Chianti Classico 2011, Docg Bottle
Rocca Di Castagnoli Chianti Classico 2011, Docg
Tuscany, Italy
$19.95

Bright and lively CC here, with vibrant sour cherry and red currant fruits supported by firm acidity and well-judged tannin. Oak is a non-issue, and the wine remains faithful to its Tuscan roots. For fans of real Sangiovese. Nicely done. Serve with a slight chill. For drinking now or should hold a few years. Tasted Oct 2014.

Château Du Cèdre Cahors 2009 Bottle
Château Du Cèdre Cahors 2009
Southwest, France
$21.95

Very fine Cahors here, that has mellowed very nicely and is drinking well now. While Malbec isn't used much in Bordeaux these days, the comparison with a fine red Bordeaux seems most appropriate. This is all about balance, structure and finesse, not in your face over ripe fruit. Fine wine at its peak now but should how several more years. Tasted April 2017.

San Lorenzo Bramante Brunello Di Montalcino 2007 Bottle
San Lorenzo Bramante Brunello Di Montalcino 2007
Tuscany, Italy
$38.75

Quite a traditionally styled Brunello, with all sorts of evolved flavours running from dried fruits, leather, old wood and nuts. Bolstered by softening tannin and crisp Sangiovese acidity, the wine is still holding in nicely, That said, I would err on the side of caution and drink fairly soon, it seems to be at its peak now. Lovely stuff. Tasted Oct 2016.
