Wynns Coonawarra Estate The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, Coonawarra, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$24.95
Now that Wynns black label cab has (justifiably) risen in price (now $45), we now have this Siding Cab from Wynns filling in the mid-$20 price point. And a stellar red it is. Fresh, balance, complex with such well-integrated oak that one hardly notices. Sneaky tannin comes along on the long finish. Certainly fine to drink now, but should age for several years....in fact, hold off 12-18 months if you can. Really excellent. Tasted July 2024. I have never been to Australia...one day perhaps.
Domaine De Carobelle Vacqueyras 2021, A.P.
Rhône, France$23.25
Solid southern Rhone from the Vacqueyras region. Just missing some of the complexity and wildness I associate with this region. For near(er) term consumption (in the next couple of years). Tasted Jan 2025.
Trius Red The Icon 2018, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$24.95
Nice texture, smooth and silky. Red fruit, with noted bell pepper and herbal notes. Very notable component of oak, which, to me, robs the wine of some of its character. This is certainly a well-made wine and some will really like this - alas, I am not one. And why could they not simply keep calling this "Trius", instead of adding "The Icon" to the label? Tasted Sep 2022.
Poplar Grove The Legacy 2015, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$60.00
Multi-Bordeaux grape blend aged for 21 months in French oak. That oak is certainly noted yet it has been nicely integrated into the rich ripe fruit. Perhaps a little more new world than old world, but so too are many Bordeaux these days. Seems to be in a good drinking place right now, this is seriously good wine. Tasted Dec 2021.
La Nerthe Les Cassagnes Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2020, Ap
Rhône, France$25.95
Organic GSM blend, in a stupidly heavy bottle. Medium-bodied, with more subtle flavour profile than expected, this is still a delicious fairly complex wine with light tannin and crisp acidity. 15% abv goes nearly unnoticed. For near term consumption. Tasted Dec 2023.
Peller Estates Private Reserve Cabernet Franc 2017, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$23.75
Medium bodied, with ripe red fruit, but still with a little typical cool climate vegetal/herbeceous notes. Oak certainly makes an appearance but is nicely integrated into the flavour profile. This is a very good Niagara Cab Franc from Peller, No need to age, though no rush either. Tasted Feb 2020.
Trius Red (The Icon) 2016, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$24.95
This is a solid cool climate Bordeaux blend. Fruit is decently ripened thanks to the hot, drought 2016 vintage, but still with the tell-tale green pepper/vegetal component like many Niagara Bordeaux blends. Oak is well integrated and the finish is solid. A very good wine, just not a 90+ pointer for me. Tasted Sept 2019.
Laberinto Cenizas Mezcla Tinta 2018, D.O. Colbún, Valle Del Maule
Maule Valley, Chile$20.75
Excellent Chilean red, with lovely balance between the fruit, minimal oak intervention, tannin and acid. Great complexity and length and I like the hints of herbs. Outstanding value. Tasted May 2023.
Domaine Des Escaravailles Le Ventabren Cairanne 2016, Ac Rhône
Rhône, France$25.95
A good CdR with typical herb/spice infused fruit yet I was a bit underwhelmed. Very little aromatically and I found the palate a bit austere and angular. No obvious signs of cork taint (eg wet carboard, smelly socks) but it could have been present sufficiently to mute the wine - the insidious nature of TCA. In any case, take my notes/score with a grain of salt as I expect this was a less than pristine bottle. Tasted Mar 2022.
Chateau Du Gazin Canon Fronsac 2018, A.C. Fronsac
Bordeaux, France$21.25
Ripe and almost lush, soft and cuddly like a teddy bear. A solid right-banker if a little faceless. I'd say that this is near or at its peak, I see little to be gained by holding this for an extended period of time. Tasted May 2023.
