Malivoire Stouck Farmstead Red 2017, VQA Lincoln Lakeshore
Ontario, Canada$26.95
A Merlot- Cab Sauv blend that has some red fruit peaking out from behind some very notable oak-driven flavours. Fruit seems ripe, with no notable green flavours and there is some crisp acidity on the finish. But, for me, the oak is just too dominant (the American component especially). I will try my second in 3 years or so to se if the oak has faded but I won't hold my breath. Tasted Nov 2020.
La Pieve Barolo 2016, Docg Piedmont
Piedmont, Italy$39.95
Lighter and less tannic than more expensive Barolos, this still exhibits some fine tart red fruit, brisk acidity and frim but silky tannin. Drinking very nicely now, but fine to hold for a few more years. Tasted Dec 2023.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$24.95
Now that Wynns black label cab has (justifiably) risen in price (now $45), we now have this Siding Cab from Wynns filling in the mid-$20 price point. And a stellar red it is. Fresh, balance, complex with such well-integrated oak that one hardly notices. Sneaky tannin comes along on the long finish. Certainly fine to drink now, but should age for several years....in fact, hold off 12-18 months if you can. Really excellent. Tasted July 2024. I have never been to Australia...one day perhaps.
Domaine De Carobelle Vacqueyras 2021, A.P.
Rhône, France$23.25
Solid southern Rhone from the Vacqueyras region. Just missing some of the complexity and wildness I associate with this region. For near(er) term consumption (in the next couple of years). Tasted Jan 2025.
La Nerthe Les Cassagnes Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2020, Ap
Rhône, France$25.95
Organic GSM blend, in a stupidly heavy bottle. Medium-bodied, with more subtle flavour profile than expected, this is still a delicious fairly complex wine with light tannin and crisp acidity. 15% abv goes nearly unnoticed. For near term consumption. Tasted Dec 2023.
Domaine De La Cendrillon Classique Corbières 2015, Ap
Languedoc, France$15.75
Quite distinctive with the local herbal flavours playing such a prominent role in the flavour profile. There is fine fruit there, not at all overly ripened, but you do have to appreciate all that garrigue flavour along side the fruit (and I do!). A bit of tartness on the good finish. Very good value at $18.95, though it appears that the price has been reduced to under $16. Well worth it if you can find a bottle. Tasted July 2020.
Convey 2016
Priorat, Spain$23.65
Certainly less heavy and extracted than many Priorats, this is actually quite bright and lively. Fruit is nicely ripened with surprisingly good acidity on the finish and supple tannin. Perhaps missing just a bit of complexity to rate higher. From the "Destination Collection", only available at one store and perhaps (as was the case here), if you are really lucky, online at the lcbo's own awful website. Tasted Feb 2020.
Altos De Inurrieta Reserva 2015
Navarra, Spain$25.45
A big rich wine, inky dark in colour.
Flavours are concentrated, very much in the dark berry spectrum, along with some dark chocolate. Finishes with some noted and rather astringent tannin. And that is what detracts from this wine. I'd like to say that one can give it another few years, but I don't think that astringency will ever recede. A good wine to be sure - certainly adventurous, just lacking some charm. Tasted Oct 2022.
Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Port 2015, Douro Superior, Douro Valley
Douro, Portugal$16.95
Fully mature LBV here from Taylor, soft and cuddly. Nice balance between sweetness and acidity, tannin is quite silky. Delicious. Quite clearly designed to be a drink-now (i.e. not for long ageing) LBV. Seems to be priced now at $19 in the LCBO's random-number method of pricing of its general list stock, more than a fair price. This goes on sale fairly regularly (I paid $15.95). I expect that there is a more recent vintage on the shelves now, but Taylor is as sure-fire as they come. Tasted Oct 2021.
Tornatore Nerello Mascalese/Nerello Cappuccio 2017, Doc Etna Rosso
Sicily, Italy$25.95
Very much like the '15, which is to say, a bit angular, austere and thin. Certainly there is some nice red fruit and crisp acidity but lacks complexity and depth and the finish is a bit clipped. Disappointing. I long for the '14. Tasted Aug 2020.
