Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Wo Groenekloof Bottle
Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Wo Groenekloof
South Africa
$13.25

This one was really nicely done and definitely got me excited about this style of sauvignon blanc again. It has a very pronounced nose with notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, fresh cut grass, white flowers, and minerality. On the palate, it's dry, medium bodied with medium+ acid and intensity with those same citrus and herbaceous notes, though the fruit tasted a little riper. This was an excellent bottle and incredible value, especially after the price drop. Tasted January 2014.

Dr. Hermann Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese 2007, Prädikatswein Bottle
Dr. Hermann Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese 2007, Prädikatswein
Mosel, Germany
$16.95

Yellow-gold colour in the glass suggests the maturity of this wine. Beautiful nose of peach, mandarin orange, ripe apple, honey, petrol, and mineral notes. Off-dry, was expecting more sweetness on this wine, but the acidity dries it out and keeps it balanced. Has an amazingly long finish with the minerality shining through. A truly tremendous value! Tasted January 2013.

Coyote's Run Red Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011, VQA Four Mile Creek, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$24.95

This is a nicely put together Pinot. Classic tart cherry and raspberry notes on the nose along with a lot of baking spice and a bit of earthiness. It's light-medium bodied with light tannins and refreshing acidity and a medium length finish. it's not a stunner, but it's a tasty Pinot at a quite good price. Tasted September 2013

Mastroberardino Aglianico 2010, Igt Campania, Estate Btld. Bottle
Mastroberardino Aglianico 2010, Igt Campania, Estate Btld.
Campania, Italy
$20.00

Very nicely done wine that shows off what aglianico can be, though in a friendlier manner than most. Lots of black fruit, dried rosemary and thyme, and loads of minerality on the nose. On the palate, the flavours continue with the true characteristics of the grape shining through its medium+ acidity and grippy tannins. It's reasonably consumer friendly though and is a nice introduction to this varietal. Tasted May 2014.

Main Divide Riesling 2010 Bottle
Main Divide Riesling 2010
Waipara, New Zealand
$17.25

This is really nice hot afternoon thirst-quenching wine. The nose is bursting with apricot, nectarine, mandarin orange and ripe red apple notes along with a bit of honey and petrol. On the palate, it's off-dry and light-bodied with a bit of effervescence, with adds to it's refreshing character. Not overly complex, but it has good length and is a steal at it's under $14 price right now. Snatch up what's left of this one. Tasted April 2014

Waipara Hills Pinot Noir 2010, Central Otago, South Island Bottle
Waipara Hills Pinot Noir 2010, Central Otago, South Island
Central Otago, New Zealand
$15.75

Quite rich and ripe, this one has classic pinot notes of dark cherry, strawberry, raspberry, cinnamon, vanilla and forest floor on the nose. It's dry, medium bodied with medium+ acid, medium tannins, and medium+ intensity. On the palate, the flavours replay, with a bit more chocolate and cola coming through. This was really nicely done, especially considering the price, and is a definite crowd pleaser. Tasted January 2014.

Domaine De La Tête Noire Vacqueyras 2010 Bottle
Domaine De La Tête Noire Vacqueyras 2010
Rhône, France
$18.75

Exactly what I look for from Southern Rhone, especially at this price. Lots of black fruit, verging on to jammy/liqueur notes, along with baking spice and pepper on the nose. Medium-full bodied on the palate with slightly grippy tannins and reasonable acidity. This is definitely a ripe wine, but it's nice and balanced. A lovely wine to open on a cold night. Terrific value. Tasted November 2013.

Rosewood Estates Semillon 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$17.95

The nose on this one sort of fooled me as to how it would taste. Lots of green apple and lemon-lime notes on the nose, thought it's rounder and sweeter on the palate with some honey and butter notes, along with a bit of minerality. It's quite round in the mouth with medium-high acid and medium length finish. Tasted September 2013.

Seriously great value from a winery setting the tone for where South Africa is headed. Everything in this one points to the Rhone with incredible depth for the price. Smokey and savoury to complement the black fruit notes. Well done

Château De Saint Lager Brouilly 2011 Bottle
Château De Saint Lager Brouilly 2011
Beaujolais, France
$19.95

This is a very pretty wine that provides everything that I hope for from Beaujolais. On the nose, there's a lots of bright red fruit along with some floral and pepper notes. It's medium-light bodied with medium-high acidity and light tannins and quite a long finish. Give it a bit of a chill and try not to finish this bottle quicker than you had planned. Tasted October 2013.
