Falernia Reserva Syrah 2009, Elquí Valley Bottle
Falernia Reserva Syrah 2009, Elquí Valley
Chile
$19.95

This a big, rich, concentrated wine with lots going on. There's a lot of black fruit flavours, but has excellent complexity as it's backed up with black pepper and smokey, meaty aromas. It's full-bodied and very ripe, but the acidity keeps it well balanced. Excellent bottle of wine, excellent value. Tasted October 2012.

Lighthall Chardonnay 2010, VQA Prince Edward County Bottle
Lighthall Chardonnay 2010, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada
$25.00

This is nicely done, but lacks some of the characteristics of County chards that I look for. This one is big and rich with lots of ripe tropical fruit to go along with the butter and vanilla oak notes. On the palate, there's the refreshing cool climate acidity and telltale County minerality, though it's not as apparent as many other County chards. This is well done, but is lacking the complexity to put it into the 90pt range. Lovers of big ripe chards will dig this though. Tasted Sept 2013

Sasso Al Poggio 2006, Igt Toscana Bottle
Sasso Al Poggio 2006, Igt Toscana
Tuscany, Italy
$19.95

This is a crowd pleaser with notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, baking spice, vanilla, and a hint of cedar. Medium to full-bodied with smooth tannins, this wine is incredibly rich yet soft in the mouth. The finish is long with chocolate and black cherry notes dominant. Excellent bottle of wine, amazing value! Tasted October 2012.

Malivoire Albert's Honour Old Vines Foch 2010, VQA Ontario Bottle
Malivoire Albert's Honour Old Vines Foch 2010, VQA Ontario
Ontario, Canada
$24.95

Not often that we see marechal foch, but this was quite nice. Quite stinky on the nose, but in a good black fruit, smoke, and earthy way. On the palate, it's quite soft and round with medium acidity. Was really confused when I tasted this blind, but it was really quite enjoyable. Tasted September 2013.

Reininger Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Walla Walla Valley Bottle
Reininger Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Walla Walla Valley
Washington, Usa
$21.95

This is the perfect mix of big fruit that you expect from Washington and the savoury notes that keep it interesting. It's big and ripe with a bit of baking spice, but there's a big earthy, funky (in a really good way) quality to this wine. Big acid and tannin for this price, it tastes like it should be a lot more expensive, plus the finish is quite long. This is one serious, tasty bottle of wine. Don't pass it up. Tasted October 2014.

Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Wo Groenekloof Bottle
Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Wo Groenekloof
South Africa
$13.25

This one was really nicely done and definitely got me excited about this style of sauvignon blanc again. It has a very pronounced nose with notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, fresh cut grass, white flowers, and minerality. On the palate, it's dry, medium bodied with medium+ acid and intensity with those same citrus and herbaceous notes, though the fruit tasted a little riper. This was an excellent bottle and incredible value, especially after the price drop. Tasted January 2014.

Uvaggio Secco Moscato 2010, Lodi, California Bottle
Uvaggio Secco Moscato 2010, Lodi, California
California, Usa
$14.75

This wine features an extremely aromatic nose of apricot, orange, lychee, ginger and white floral notes. It's not nearly as expressive on the palate, though the fruit and ginger notes are very present. It has medium body and acidity with reasonable length, though there is a slightly disagreeable bitter note to the finish. Overall, it's an extremely pleasant wine and paired nicely with a ginger-laden stirfry. Plus, it's a very reasonable price for a wine from a California producer who is thinking outside of the box of what that state can produce. Tasted March 2013.

Rosehall Run Cabernet Franc Cold Creek 2007, VQA Prince Edward County Bottle
Rosehall Run Cabernet Franc Cold Creek 2007, VQA Prince Edward County

$29.95

Such a lovely bottle of wine. Beautiful nose of cherry, raspberry, and quite prominent minerality along with some earthiness and a bit of sweet vanilla. It's light-medium bodied with medium acidity, low tannins and a medium length finish. This is an extremely refreshing and classy bottle of wine, though I would suggest drinking it sooner rather than later before the fruit starts to fade any more. Tasted September 2013.

Katogi Averoff 2008, Metsovo Bottle
Katogi Averoff 2008, Metsovo
Greece
$16.95

Really digging this one! Lots of dried fruit and savoury and floral notes that I've come to expect with these old world style Greek wines (the label alone would have had me leaning this way without even a taste). On the palate, there is still a lot of lovely black fruit to go along with the excellent, refreshing acidity and light tannins. It has quite a long finish. This should be pleasing to most people, from the wine geek who wants something a little offbeat, to the person who just wants a pleasant fruity wine. Excellent value too! Tasted September 2013

Olim Bauda Nizza Barbera D'asti 2009, Docg Bottle
Olim Bauda Nizza Barbera D'asti 2009, Docg
Piedmont, Italy
$35.95

This is a serious step up on what most consider to be Barbera. There's loads of black cherry/berry along with vanilla and cinnamon spice and big time smokey/meaty notes on the nose. The palate is quite full-bodied with medium+ acid and tannins with high alcohol (14.5% alcohol). Everything is balanced, but this one could use another 2 years to mellow. If you're drinking now, make sure there are some grilled red meats on the table. Regardless, this is one seriously tasty wine. Tasted May 2014.
