Emiliana Novas Petit Verdot 2011, Colchagua Valley Bottle
Emiliana Novas Petit Verdot 2011, Colchagua Valley
Chile
$15.95

This wine hits all the notes that New World wine lovers love. Black fruit, a bit of floral notes, vanilla, a bit of baking spice, and chocolate. Tannins are a little much, but it's manageable to drink on its own as the fruit and oak make it nice and friendly. Excellent length on the finish. I would have decanted this one if I had thought about it, but it worked. Seriously well made wine, plus the price makes it one of those wines you can't miss. Tasted September 2013

Carpineto Farnito Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Igt Toscana Bottle

What a stunner!! Loads of classic Cabernet notes on the nose, with blackberry, cassis, coffee, cigar box, tar, and a healthy dose of barnyard. The stink on this one added a ton of complexity and reminded me of a good Brunello. On the palate, it was full-bodied with high tannin and acidity, with more of the same black fruit notes shining through along with soy sauce, dark chocolate and some meaty notes. A top-notch bottle at a respectable price with 8-10 years life ahead of it if you want to stash it in the cellar. Tasted January 2013

It's been a while since I've had this wine, but it's just as lovely as I remember. While there's a good deal of fresh red fruit, this wine is all about the floral and savoury notes. A little spicy on the palate, it's mid-weight with loads of acidity and slightly grippy tannins. Some might consider this a food wine but, for me, this is an incredibly refreshing wine that I want to drink all the time. It's not the most complex, but it's put together so well. Tasted April 2015

Domaine Durieu Lucile Avril Châteauneuf Du Pape 2010, Ac Bottle

Such a stunner! This one was pure Chateauneuf with loads blackberry, black licorice, garrigue, tar, and smokey/gamey notes on the nose. On the palate, it was medium bodied and quite round in the mouth with medium acidity and medium+ tannins with quite noticeably high alcohol. The flavours replayed, though I found more intense black fruit notes, especially prune, and black pepper that continued through on a very long finish. Not a cheap bottle, but the quality more than makes up for it. Tasted January 2014.

Hauller Muenchberg Riesling Grand Cru 2011, Ac Alsace Bottle
Hauller Muenchberg Riesling Grand Cru 2011, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France
$19.95

Brilliant example of what can be produced in Alsace at an excellent price. Lots of red apple, stone fruit, mandarin, white floral and minerality notes on the nose. On the palate, it's slightly off-dry, medium bodied with high acid and an oily mouthfeel. The flavours replay, along with some pineapple and more intense citrus notes on the very long finish. This is incredibly enjoyable now, but it could be cellared for another 5 years. Tasted January 2014.

Domaine Tournon Mathilda Shiraz 2011, Victoria Bottle
Domaine Tournon Mathilda Shiraz 2011, Victoria

If there was ever a wine at this price that bridges the gap between New and Old World, this has to be it. Medium-bodied, it's loaded with black fruit, spice, and smoke that point to Australia along with the meaty, peppery notes that point to the Rhone. Medium tannins and refreshing acidity, this is a wine that is meant to be consumed at the table. This is in contrast to most Aussie shiraz which nowadays seems to be produced for post-meal sipping. Amazing price for a truly well put together wine. Tasted December 2014

Montes Purple Angel 2011, Colchagua Valley Bottle
Montes Purple Angel 2011, Colchagua Valley

Not a wine that I would go out and buy, but was neat to have the opportunity to try. This wine is all about being big and dense. Loads of black fruit, dark chocolate, baking spice, and coffee on the nose. On the palate, the acidity kept things refreshing while the tannins were quite big, though ripe and smooth, and the finish was long. What kept this more interesting than so many fruit bombs was the savoury note that is so often associated with Carmenere. Despite this added complexity, this is a wine to drink by itself on a cold winter's night. Tasted January 2015.

Dominio Del Plata Crios Limited Edition Red Blend 2012 Bottle
Dominio Del Plata Crios Limited Edition Red Blend 2012
Mendoza, Argentina

Not much to say about this one other than it's packed with loads of black fruit, spice, and smokey/meaty notes. With medium tannins, medium-full body, and good acidity to keep everything in check, it's nothing that's going to blow your mind with complexity, but it's the first thing you want to drink when the burgers or ribs come off the bbq. The price can't be beat. Buy a ton for the summer! Tasted June 2014

Tyrrell's Hvd Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2012, Hunter Valley Bottle
Tyrrell's Hvd Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2012, Hunter Valley

$29.95

Incredibly well put together Chardonnay in a very lean, oaked style, somewhat reminiscent of Premier Cru Chablis. Reductive matchstick is the first note off the nose, followed by lime zest, almond, a hint of honey and vanilla, along with a great deal of minerality. High acid and medium bodied, this isn't what I think of when it comes to Aussie Chards. Elegant and focused with the ability to age for many years to come, this is top-notch value for lovers of this style. Tasted November 2014

Can't say much more about this one other than it's a fun, funky, savoury gem. Each time I have it BTG at a restaurant, the server lets me know it's oxidized and not what I might expect from a chardonnay. It's medium-bodied, has good acid, has some oxidized apple and melon notes, a bit of citrus, and a ton of character. Fans of sherry will dig this one, as will wine lovers with an open mind. Don't miss out. Tasted September 2014
