Braschi Albana Di Romagna 2012, Docg
Emilia Romagna, Italy$16.75
I've had this one a few times now and every time I'm always drawn to its unique quality. Deep golden in the glass, the colour alone suggests something a bit different. While there is a bit of mandarine and a hint of peach on the nose, it's dominated by savoury notes of Orange Pekoe tea, almond, and hay. On the palate, it's medium bodied with good acidity, though there is a bitter, tannic quality that, while very pleasing with food, will be unpleasant for some. That being said, this wine has tons of character and provides excellent value. Tasted November 2014
Hugel Gentil 2013, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$16.95
As always, this is a good value and example of what Alsace can produce. Quite fragrant on the nose with notes of mandarine, lime, orange blossom, white floral, and a hint of spice. Basically dry, it's medium bodied with medium-high acidity. While there's nothing that really points to any single varietal, this wine fully points to Alsace. There's the body and intensity, along with the Pinot Gris/Gewurztraminer spice and lean citrus from the Riesling. Not incredibly complex, but well put together. Tasted April 2015
Ormarine Picpoul De Pinet 2013, Ac Coteaux Du Languedoc
Languedoc, France$12.95
There's not much to say about this other than it's simple and crisp, but well balanced. Light-bodied with fresh acidity, this wine is mostly dominated by white grapefruit notes along with a bit of tree fruit and a dash of minerality. It's not a stunner, but it's not meant to be, especially at this price. Would be particularly refreshing on a hot afternoon with some fresh seafood. Tasted February 2015.
Château Camplazens Syrah 2009, Vins De Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France$13.10
An enjoyable modern style syrah. Medium-full bodied, it delivers up lots of dark fruit, bacon, and black pepper with a nice long finish. Not very complex, but it's pleasant. Tasted February 2012
Taja Reserva 2006, Do Jumilla
Murcia, Spain$15.95
A pleasant bottle of wine that delivers up aromas of blueberry, dark cherry, dark chocolate, and sweet baking spice. Medium bodied, it's got decent acidity but the tannins are a little much. Not bad, especially for the price, but the oak is a little to apparent for my taste. Tasted March 2012.
Johanneshof Reinisch Pinot Noir 2009, Themenregion, Niederösterreich
Niederösterreich, Austria$14.15
A decent Pinot Noir for the money. Light garnet in colour, the nose is dominated by sour cherry, strawberry, and a bit of earthiness. It's not very complex, but it's got reasonable acidity and and a medium length finish. Tasted May 2012.
Domaine Jacky Marteau Sauvignon Touraine 2011, Ac
Loire, France$13.95
Really tasty bottle of wine for the price. Lots of green apple and citrus with some nice herbaceousness thrown into the mix. Light-bodied, it's not very complex, but it does have good length on the finish. Good bottle to sip on the patio on a hot afternoon. Tasted October 2012.
Château Hauchat 2010, Ac Fronsac
Bordeaux, France$14.95
A nice introduction to basic Bordeaux. The nose has aromas of cassis and blackberry, cedar, and a hint of herbaceousness. On the palate, this wine has medium-high acidity with grippy tannins and has medium length on the finish. Not the most complex of wines and it could definitely benefit from a few years in the cellar to soften up, but it's a nice, inexpensive wine to drink with steak or lamb. Tasted March 2013.
Lenz Moser Prestige Grüner Veltliner 2012, Niederösterreich
Austria$0.00
Grabbed this one expecting something light and pleasant (mid-week wine for a hot day), but didn't get it at all. This one was incredibly simple, with citrus and a slight peppery note. Medium bodied, the simple notes on the nose continued on the palate, with the acidity seeming quite disjointed. I know it's only $14, but there's a ton of other wines, including many Gruners, that deliver much more at this price point. If you need to, save this for cooking wine. Tasted September '14
Coppi Peucetico Primitivo 2007, Doc Gioia Del Colle
Puglia, Italy$13.95
Not bad, but not great. Big and ripe with lots of plum, raisin, and baking spice aromas on the nose. The ripe character makes this almost seem a tad sweet, but there's still reasonable acidity to keep it balanced. Along with this are somewhat grippy tannins. Would be more enjoyable with more complexity and a longer finish, but this isn't bad at all for the money. Drink pair beautifully with a simple tomato and sausage pasta. Tasted January 2013.
