Alain Jaume Grande Garrigue Vacqueyras 2010
Rhône, France$24.95
Really digging this beauty of a wine! Very fruit forward with loads of black fruit jam and a bit of cedar, tar, and smoke on the nose. On the palate, it's medium-full bodied with medium acid and slightly grippy tannins with a very long finish. It's a little boozy, but it's not overdone. Really nicely done!! Taste April 2014.
Daniel Rion & Fils Vieilles Vignes Nuits St Georges 2011
Burgundy, France$43.75
Seriously tasty Pinot at that's somewhat affordable considering the cost of most Burgundy (picked it up at $35). Lovely cherry, strawberry, raspberry notes along with a bit of smoke and baking spice. Light-medium bodied, there's nice tannic grip to it, refreshing acidity, and a lovely fruity, long finish. This is ready to go now, but will definitely get better in 3-5 years. Tasted October 2014
Mcwilliam's Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2006, Hunter Valley
New South Wales, Australia$19.95
At seven years, this wine is showing it's age, but still has a long life ahead of it. The nose is loaded with lovely tart citrus and riper tropical aromas, along with petrol, white floral and minerality notes. On the palate, it's medium bodied and bone dry with crazy mouthwatering acidity with a long finish that shows of the lemon-lime notes. Really lovely bottle of wine that is a steal for this price. Would love to see what this is going to be like in 5 years. Tasted February 2014
Domaine Des Fines Caillottes Pouilly Fumé 2012, Ac
Loire, France$26.95
This is exactly what I look for in Sauvignon Blanc. Lime, mandarine, tangerine, along with a hint of herbal (thyme, tarragon), and a good bit of minerality on the nose. It's medium bodied with high acidity and a long finish, it has the classic citrus and minerality that makes Loire Sauv Blanc so tasty. It's not all that complex, but everything's exactly as it should be. This is one classy wine! Good value as well. Tasted November 2014.
Norman Hardie County Chardonnay Unfiltered 2012, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$39.00
Year after year, this is a favourite of mine. The nose reminds me of past vintages, with smoke, caramel, vanilla, apple and citrus, along with a very distinct minerality. On the palate, it was medium bodied and felt like it had medium alcohol, though it's only 12%. The flavours were similar, though I found more mandarin and papaya notes to shine through on an incredibly long finish. This was such an enjoyable bottle! Tasted December 2013.
Best's Great Western Bin No. 1 Shiraz 2009, Grampians, Victoria
Victoria, Australia$24.95
This bottle could get me drinking more Aussie shiraz again. Deep purple in the glass, the nose is dominated by tons of blackfruit, dark chocolate, and pepper. Tannins are quite present, but polished, with a refreshing acidity that is often missing from Aussie shiraz (comes from a much cooler region than Barossa). Really nice, long finish. Super bottle of wine. Tasted June 2012.
Ambullneo Vineyards Fang Blanc Santa Maria Valley 2007, Central Coast
California, Usa$39.75
Picked this one because it was on a serious sale and the age of the wine was intriguing. Incredibly happy with this pick. It's Cali in the glass, with the big, ripe tropical (papaya and mango) notes, caramel, honey, and hazelnut notes. It's full-bodied with surprising acidity, keeping it well balanced and much lower alcohol than one would expect with a wine of this style. Very long finish, there's a ton of complexity on this one. I haven't been happier in a long time with an unknown wine purchase in a long time. Tasted August 2014.
Bellingham The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2012, Coastal Region
South Africa$22.95
I've been really digging South African chenin lately and this is exactly why. The nose is incredibly complex with tons of bright lemon-lime notes to go along with almond, honey, white floral, and slightly herbaceous notes. On the palate, it's medium-full bodied with the same complex flavours shining through. It has the bright, refreshing acidity which keeps everything nice and clean and a finish that just goes on and on. Such a treat, especially at this price. Tasted January 2014.
Joseph Cattin Hatschbourg Gewürztraminer 2010, Ac Alsace Grand Cru
Alsace, France$19.95
Another excellent valued stunner for Cattin!! Everything about this one screams gewurz, from the tropical (mandarin and loads of lychee), floral (orange blossom and rose), and spicy peppery notes. On the palate, it's round and luscious and reasonably sweet with warming alcohol, though it has surprising acidity that keeps things balanced. It has excellent length. An absolutely lovely pairing with spicy Indian fare. Tasted May 2014.
The Old Third Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011, Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$42.00
This is a really lovely example of what the County is doing well. Light garnet in the glass, the nose dominated by tart cherry, strawberry, and raspberry notes along with slight earthy and gamey notes. On the palate, it has mouthwatering acidity and very fine tannins, giving this a very silky texture in the mouth. It has a lovely, long-lasting finish. I'm very excited to try more from this winery! Tasted December 2013
