Nicolas Joly Les Vieux Clos 2009, Ac Savennièrres Bottle
Nicolas Joly Les Vieux Clos 2009, Ac Savennièrres
Loire, France
$37.00

Truly hard to explain this wine because it is seriously in a league of its own. Medium golden in the glass, the nose is ripe and spicy, with ripe/baked apple, smoke, and baking spice dominating. It's not often you find a white that is supposed to be served at 14C and decanted, but this one showed off it's richness at 12C and was let warm on the table for almost 2hrs, with beautiful acidity, richness and complexity. The finish went on and on, showing off the rich fruit notes. Every wine lover should have a chance to taste something like this as it's truly a unique wine. Tasted November 2013.

Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 2012, Wo Hemel En Aarde Valley Bottle
Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 2012, Wo Hemel En Aarde Valley
Walker Bay, South Africa
$44.95

This is one serious Pinot that I had been dying to try after being blown away by their Chardonnay. It didn't disappoint at all. The nose is incredibly complex, with the classic red fruit (dark cherry, strawberry) to go along with meaty and savoury herbal notes and slight baking spice from the oak. It's a ripe and powerful wine, but in the most incredibly elegant manner. This is a top notch wine from an amazing producer. Grab one for tonight, then lay a few down for up to 10 years. Lustau Solera Reserva Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Bottle
Lustau Solera Reserva Dry Amontillado Los Arcos
Andalusia, Spain
$18.95

Such an incredibly complex bottle of wine! Roasted nuts, caramel, iodine, and a hint of orange peel on the nose. Medium bodied, lovely silky smooth texture, and a well-balanced finish with the lovely acidity intermingling with the sweetness. This wine begs being paired with olives and serrano ham. Moulin Touchais Coteaux Du Layon 1996, Coteaux Du Layon Bottle
Moulin Touchais Coteaux Du Layon 1996, Coteaux Du Layon
Loire, France
$37.95

A truly outstanding bottle of wine! Beautiful golden colour with aromas of honey, orange blossom, apricot, and a touch of nuttiness as well. It's medium sweet with a good amount of acidity to keep it balanced and finishes up with a nice, long finish. One of the best wines I've had this year and a seriously good value ($42 in Quebec). A true gem! Tasted January 2012.

Studert Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2007, Prädikatswein Bottle
Studert Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2007, Prädikatswein
Mosel, Germany
$17.95

A true gem of a wine. It has aromas of ripe apple, pear, honey, orange blossoms, some petrol, and minerality. While it has a reasonable amount of sweetness at only 8.5% alcohol, this is perfectly counterbalanced by the acidity. Light-medium bodied with an incredibly long finish. Damn fine! Tasted April 2012.

Descendientes De J. Palacios Pétalos 2010, Do Bierzo Bottle
Descendientes De J. Palacios Pétalos 2010, Do Bierzo
Galicia, Spain
$25.00

A little bit different from '09 bottling (one of my favs from last year) but this is still dynamite. Lots of blackberry/cherry notes along with a fresh floral quality. Along with this, there's a hint of spice from the oak and a slight herbaceousness that I didn't find in the '09. It's medium weight with nice fresh acidity and with youthful, chalky tannins. Hold on to this for a couple years if you can. You'll definitely be rewarded. Tasted November 2012.

Tawse Quarry Road Riesling 2011, VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula

$23.95

This is top notch riesling. Loads of green apple, lemon, and lime on the nose. This continues on the palate along with a lovely minerality note that reminds me of a good Mosel riesling. It's off dry, but acidity makes it seem drier than it actually is. The finish goes on and on. Such a lovely bottle of wine! Tasted September 2013.

Rolly Gassmann Stegreben De Rorschwihr Gewurztraminer 2009, Ac Alsace Bottle
Rolly Gassmann Stegreben De Rorschwihr Gewurztraminer 2009, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France
$27.95

Textbook Gewürztraminer! Rose, lychee, stone fruit, spice....would be no question what you're drinking if tasted blind. Off dry and medium-full bodied, it has good acidity to keep things balanced. It definitely needs food (spicy curry would be the perfect fare) due to the intensity of the wine, as the intensity of the wine can be a bit overwhelming on its own. It's a truly amazing wine though with a finish that goes on and on. Let this warm up and let your senses get blown away. Tasted June 2013.

Kenneth Volk Santa Maria Cuvée Pinot Noir 2008, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County Bottle
Kenneth Volk Santa Maria Cuvée Pinot Noir 2008, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County
California, Usa
$31.00

This is a seriously lovely, maturing wine at a very reasonable price right now (reduced to $25). Was expecting some a bit more plush, but it's also very fresh. Lots of ripe red fruit on the nose as well as some cola, smoke, and baking spice notes along with a bit of roasted beet. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with soft tannins and medium acidity. The flavours replay on the finish, with the tartness of the red fruit keeping everything from becoming too sweet on the long finish. This is one bridges the gap between New World and Old World styles and should be appealing to many. Tasted March'14

Monte Del Frá Bardolino 2011 Bottle
Monte Del Frá Bardolino 2011
Veneto, Italy
$13.95

This isn't a showstopper, but there's true beauty in the freshness of this wine. Incredibly aromatic with intense cherry and raspberry notes along with a bit of earthiness to add some complexity. Light-bodied, it's very juicy with refreshing acidity and a long finish. Figured this would be something nice and simple to pair with pizza, but this is the best damn pizza wine I've had in a long time!! Seriously enjoyable and an amazing value. Definitely buying more! Tasted March 2013.
