I was born into a French Canadian family and started tasting wine early with food. My love of wine and food goes hand in hand, when you have a perfect pairing, it is one of those great pleasures in life.
I have recently returned to Ontario, after living in Victoria, BC for the last four years. I worked part-time for the Mark Anthony Group which allowed me to attend many industry tastings, including numerous Import Vintners and Spirits Association tastings.
Before moving to Victoria, in December of 2006, I graduated with a Sommelier Certification from Algonquin College in Ottawa.
What I look for in a wine, above all, is aromatics. The nose should draw you in, not to much alcohol with good acidity, rich and concentrated flavour. For me, great wines are about subtlety, complexity and finesse. A bottle of wine should tell a story, should have a sense of place, terroir, where the grapes where grown. The use of oak should be handled with care.
I love everything about wine and recognize I have a great deal to learn. I enjoyed a great deal of BC wines and I am eager to get more familiar with Ontario wines.

Domaine Les Yeuses Les épices Syrah 2007, Vins De Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France$15.95
This wine is medium violet in color and opened up with aromas of raspberry, blueberry, spices, black pepper, earthy and mineral notes. On the mouthfeel, light to medium bodied, light on fruit, mineral driven, herbal flavours with balanced acidity and well integrated tannins. Great energy on the finish with peppery flavours, this wine has a strong minerality presence throughout. This wine is not meant for everyone, if you like a fruity type of Shiraz, this is not going to be for you. I found the first two glasses to be interesting but that interest quickly faded away.

Descendientes De J. Palacios Pétalos 2008
Spain$25.00
The nose opened up with fresh fruit; plums, raspberries, black cherries and licorice. The palate was sweet with balance acidity and soft tannins. The finish, medium length, with flavours of raisins, smoke and minerals. An easy drinking wine, doesn’t have great complexity, but it is delicious and fun to drink.
Giacomo Mori Castelrotto Riserva Chianti 2006, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$27.95
Subdued nose of violet, sour cherries, plums and slight earthiness. Medium bodied, vibrant acidity, dusty tannins with smooth finish. Great food wine.
Poggio Bonelli Chianti Classico Riserva 2006, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$28.95
This wine is already 6 years old but the color his still very dark, opaque ruby. On the nose, the aromas are dominating by oak characteristics; roasted coffee, leather, smoky, vanilla and concentrated cherry/dark plum. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied (alcohol coming in at 14%), soft texture, concentrated flavours, balance acidity and woodsy tannins. Medium length and a mild dryness on the finish, with a more masculine, intense example of Sangiovese (this wine is 100% Sangiovese).
What I like about Sangiovese is the see saw tug of war between sweet and sour fruit, earthy and floral notes but in my view and for my palate this wine is overripe, over concentrated and over oak. This shows that the obsession with the over use of oak maturation is not limited to the new world wines unfortunately. Tasted on October 16, 2012.
Del Cerro Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2006, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$25.95
Very rustic and traditional winemaking style here. Nose is very concentrated and heavy; dark fruit, tobacco, liquorice and dusty. Medium to full body, tannins are well integrated but could have used more acidity. Palate is a bit clumsy, not quite coming together with short finish. I don’t think this wine will get much better in a few years. Disappointing overall.
