Boutari Moschofilero 2015, Mantinia Bottle
Boutari Moschofilero 2015, Mantinia
Greece
$14.05

The aromas are almost muscat-like, with tangerine, nectarine, ripe pink grapefruit, and red apple, along with delicate traces of rosewater, orange blossom, white pepper, ginger, and honey. On the palate it is dry (the nose might suggests otherwise), with the citrus and spice dominating, though the orchard fruit and floral notes come back to join the citrus and spice on the finish. The balance and complexity are good, and this wine is great value overall. Tasted Oct. 2016.

Torres Gran Coronas Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2012, Do Penedès Bottle
Torres Gran Coronas Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2012, Do Penedès
Penedès, Spain
$21.95

This Spanish cabernet sauvignon shows a good mix of ripe varietal fruit, oak influence, and savoury, dusty, Old-World character. Aromas are of ripe raspberry and dark cherry, cassis, cedar, sage, dusty, old leather, dark chocolate, tobacco, and earth. The palate shows similar flavours but with a sense of iron and more dark chocolate. The acidity is nicely balanced, though the tannins aren't the smoothest. The finish is fairly long. This could age another year or two to soften the tannins, though it might lose some of its fruit. It would probably be best to drink sooner than later, paired with some venison, roast beef, or hard cheeses. Tasted Nov. 2016.

Canepa Finísimo Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Do Marchigüe, Colchagua Valley Bottle
Canepa Finísimo Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Do Marchigüe, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$17.95

Pours a glass-staining, deep ruby clour. The nose is quite intense, with aromas of cassis, wild blackberry, prune, mint, cedar, tobacco, leather, bay leaf, bell pepper, and a touch of coffee and molasses. On the palate it is full and rich, though lacking elegance and the complexity of the nose. The tannins are substantial and have some grip, and the acidity is a bit low, which causes some heaviness. The finish is long-ish, but a touch hot. Should handle thick cuts of red meat nicely.

Château La Grave D'arzac Blanc 2013, Ac Graves Bottle
Château La Grave D'arzac Blanc 2013, Ac Graves
Bordeaux, France
$15.95

Fairly simple, but well-made white Bordeaux. White grapefruit, green apple, pineapple, and lemon aromas, as well as some minerality and a bit of vegetal aromas of fresh cut grass and green bell pepper. The palate is medium-light, crisp, and lively, with the citrus fruit dominating. Decent length with lingering acidity, and some more green pepper notes.

Chateau Timberlay 2011, Ac Bordeaux Superieur

$17.00

Aromas of plum, prune, blackberry, smoke, anise, baking spice, and a bit of green bean. Fairly simple and lean on the palate, with plum, tart cherry, black pepper, and a bit of vanilla. Medium bodied, grippy tannins, and tart acidity. Medium length, finishing with plum, cherry, green bell pepper, and some earthiness. A little bit austere, but otherwise decent value.

Château Hauchat 2011, Ac Fronsac Bottle
Château Hauchat 2011, Ac Fronsac
Bordeaux, France
$17.95

Relatively simple, and more appealing on the nose than the palate. Aromas of plum, cherry, raspberry, cedar, vanilla, green bell pepper, and a bit of baking spice. The fruit is more like tart cherries, cranberries, and under ripe raspberries on the palate, with some cedar, green bell pepper, and a vague woodiness coming through. Gives a bit of a coarse impression with high, tart acidity and slightly rough tannins. Medium body and length. Pair with simple and/or slightly tough cuts of red meat.

Nice balance of jammy black fruit and coffee, smoke, and toast on the nose. on the palate it is equally ripe, and loaded with vanilla/toast flavours. Slightly cloying overall, and could have used a bit more structure.

Ruppertsberger Linsenbusch Gewürztraminer Spätlese 2014, Prädikatswein

This seems to show a noticeable botrytis character. Light gold in color. Lovely aromas of honey, orange blossom, pineapple, ripe peach, apricot jam, candied grapefruit, ginger, and orange zest, along with just a bit of rose and lychee. Hits the palate with loads of honey and apricot jam, but soon turns less sweet, with pineapple, ripe pink grapefruit, gala apple, white pepper and ginger. Honeyed and rich on the palate, but still bright and clean thanks to high acidity. Very good length, finishing with ripe peach, lemon, white pepper, and honey. Delicious!

Feudi San Pio Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2013, Doc Bottle
Feudi San Pio Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2013, Doc
Veneto, Italy
$19.95

Medium ruby with a slight purple hue. Immediately after pouring the aromas were dominated by tar, smoke, bacon fat, and espresso. After a few minutes, these seemed to tone down enough for a more balanced nose, with dried cherry, blackberry, fig, prune, black olive, almond, menthol, tobacco, dried herbs, and some saline minerality coming through. The fruit is pleasantly forward on the soft, medium-full palate, and is complemented by more smoky/meaty tones, along with cocoa, licorice, cedar, and sweet black olive. Moderate acidity, medium-high but soft tannins. Good length.

Michele Chiarlo Le Orme Barbera D'asti Superiore 2013, Docg Bottle
Michele Chiarlo Le Orme Barbera D'asti Superiore 2013, Docg
Piedmont, Italy
$15.95

Subdued aromas of sweet blackberries and dark plums, violet, vanilla, spearmint, leather, and damp forest floor. Repeats on the medium-light palate with good fruit purity and freshness. The tannins are medium-low and the acids medium-high. Though this wine is not very complex it offers a decent length finish of dark fruit and spearmint, with a touch of cocoa emerging. Pair with chicken parmesan or light pastas.
