Rabl Kittmansberg Grüner Veltliner 2013, Dac Kamptal
Kamptal, Austria$14.95
Lemon, peach, apple, minerality, white pepper, ginger, and a hint of green pepper on the nose. The lemon, green apple, and spice repeat nicely, along with some tropical fruit, on the palate. Medium bodied, crisp, and tangy. Medium length finish with more citrus, green apple and spice.
Bartier Bros. Gewurztraminer Lone Pine Vineyard 2013
British Columbia, Canada$20.00
Not very complex, but well balanced. Peach, under-ripe pineapple, orange zest, white pepper, and ginger on the nose. Pretty much repeats on the palate, with a bit more tropical fruit character. A very light, almost dry, and very understated gewurz.
Baillie Grohman Merlot 2012
British Columbia, Canada$23.00
The nose is fresh and pure, with aromas of ripe plums and blackberries, spearmint, violet, and hints of cocoa, roasted red peppers, and light smoke, tobacco, and forest floor. The fruit is equally fresh on the palate, but with more of a dark cherry flavour. Though the body is not too much more than medium, the wine has ample structure, due to its medium-high acidity and firm, chalky tannins. Finishes with dark fruit, cocoa, and mint. Elegant and pure overall. It should last another 5-10 years easily thanks to the tannins.
L.A. Cetto Petite Sirah 2012, Guadalupe Valley, Baja California
Mexico, World$11.95
Aromas of blackberry, prune, raisin, baking spices, cigar box, pine/menthol, as well as a slightly funky leathery/gamey component which mostly blew off after a few minutes. the palate still has lots of dried fruit, but also some cherry, molasses, vanilla, black pepper, and a chocolaty note. Quite full-bodied, with lots of mouthfilling, grippy tannins and medium-high acidity to balance. Nice chocolaty and dried fruit finish. Pretty great for the price.
12 E Mezzo Primitivo Del Salento 2012, Igp
Puglia, Italy$13.95
Ripe, jammy bouquet, with plum, cherry pie filling, blackberry, menthol, smoke, vanilla, cocoa, and a hint of green olive. The ripe plum continues on the palate, but there is loads of tart cherry and raspberry to balance the ripeness, along with clove and black pepper spice. Given the relatively low alcohol (12.5%), it has surprising presence and a supple, full mouthfeel. Lots of well-integrated tannins. Decent length. An interesting wine to try with cheesy pastas.
Time Syrah 2012, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$35.00
Very plush and appealing. Somewhat jammy and oaky, but with some substance. Blueberry and dark cherry jam, dark chocolate, vanilla, smoke, cinnamon, tobacco, sweet black olive on the nose. On the palate, it is almost blueberry pie, with chocolate, cigar box, vanilla and cedar. Medium tannins, and acidity. Silky and smooth. Would probably be at its best with smoky, sweet ribs.
Hmc Mcwatters Collection Chardonnay 2013, Oliver
British Columbia, Canada$21.79
Great balance of fruit, oak, and creaminess. Not too overdone. Baked pineapple and red apple, melon, peach, vanilla, cream, and toasty, biscuit aromas. Repeats on the palate with some lemon zest, white pepper, and almond keeping things interesting. Medium to medium plus acids, almost full bodied. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Very good length. Finishes with cream, pineapple, red apples, and vanilla.
Time Estate Winery Chardonnay 2013, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$27.99
Lifted, bright, fruit forward aromatics of peach, orange, candied lemon, red apple, pineapple, honeysuckle, with slight vanilla and lees. Round and soft palate, with some creamy, nutty character adding to the aromas. This chardonnay is mostly about the fruit. Medium acidity, good length finish, with some warmth.
River Stone Corner Stone 2012, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$28.50
Lots of character. Blackberry, cassis, dark cherry, mocha, bell pepper, tobacco, forest floor, and a touch of eucalyptus. Repeats with some black pepper on the palate. Full-bodied, smooth. Supple tannins and medium-high acidity. Good finish. The mocha character is a little bit overstated, which obscures the fruit a bit.
Chakana Maipe Reserve Bonarda 2012, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$15.95
Deep inky purple color. Fruit dominated bouquet of ripe blackberries and dark-skinned plums, joined by violet, vanilla, baking spice, black olive, and a bit of coffee. Super ripe on the palate as well, with some dark cherry, black pepper, and cocoa notes coming out. Plush, velvety, and mouthfilling, but not huge. Good length, with a strong dark chocolate note on the finish.
