Villa Ponciago Beaujolais Villages 2012, Ac
Beaujolais, France$15.30
Who knew Village Beaujolais could be so good...Give it a second to open up in your glass...it's opens up like a rose does to spring, revealing rose petels, sweet berries, waxy cherries, earth and game notes. Fresh and smooth on the palate, finishes with structure...light bodied. Nothing to complain about here...lovely is the best word to describe this little piece of wonderful.
Rosewood Select Series Merlot 2011, VQA Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada$21.95
This is a warm and cozy style. Milk chocolate, baking spices, cherry and vanilla oak. Medium weight with soft gentle tannins.
Delaforce Touriga Nacional 2011
Douro, Portugal$17.75
An absolutely stellar wine! Full of complexities and big big super drying tannins. Expect black cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, scorched earth, cigar char, barn yard, vanilla, cedar, ash, charcoal and mineral on the finish. Serious QPR here!
Domaine Jean Bousquet Grande Réserve Malbec 2012
Mendoza, Argentina$19.75
Loaded with ripe plums, brown sugar, sweet tobacco and vanilla (Hint of coffee grinds). Very ripe, almost cooked, but the tannins and acidity revive the palate. Very big and lush but just a tad off balance. Still, very enjoyable so Cab Heads will rejoice.
Château Le Conseiller 2009, Ac Bordeaux Supérieur
Bordeaux, France$23.85
Very nice drinkable Bordeaux – I just thought it was a tad boring this vintage –I was expecting the tannins to have more grip. I wanted more cedar and cigar box, tobacco and vanilla oak notes…they're in there… just a bit too subtle.
Malivoire Pinot Gris 2012, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
Nice easy drinking Pinot Gris with just enough richness.
Henry Of Pelham Speck Family Reserve Pinot Noir 2010, VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada$28.25
Well we know where the 2012 reserve is headed. This 2010 is super delicate but with structure and balance. Tannins are smooth but noticeable. New world cool climate Pinot notes - strawberry, cherry, cola, hickory smoke, and vanilla. Nice finish. On-sale for $28. Buy lots!!!!
Terredora Aglianico 2010, Igt Campania
Campania, Italy$16.95
Great producer of both whites and reds from Southern Italy. This is textbook Aglianico - medium bodied with herbs, smoked cherries, black licorice, burnt rubber and black pepper. High acid ads a little nip to the finish. Nice structure throughout.
Château Des Charmes Chardonnay Barrel Fermented 2011, VQA Niagara On The Lake
Ontario, Canada$13.95
Good for the price but a bit to edgy, unrefined and over oaked. Spend a couple extra bucks and get the St. David’s Bench Chardonnay – much more complex, balanced and creamy.
Fontanafredda Eremo Langhe Rosso 2012
Piedmont, Italy$17.95
This Langhe is amazing for the price. I bet if the WA folks tasted this blind, it would have scored much higher. It's all there - balance, structure, weight, fruit, earth and charm. Smells like the land and tastes like a mix of cherries, blood oranges and mushrooms. I'd say at this price, this is a wine to purchase by the box and experience it throughout your life while it evolves into so much more.
