Casas Del Bosque Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Casablanca Valley
Casablanca Valley, Chile$13.95
Everything I love about Sauvignon Blanc is in that bottle. There's something 'green' about it with sharp citrus aromas and a grassy, asparagusness. Crisp, but not so-so light on the palate, with a long, juicy finish, this is a little more like a New Zealand version of the grape, than a French version. Distinctive and a little pungent.
Ulisse Unico Pecorino 2010, Igt Terre Di Chieti
Abruzzo, Italy$17.95
This is indeed a tart wine, balanced by a round texture on the palate. Green apple with bitter lime, almonds and a deeper backbone of cantaloupe on the nose is backed up by mineral and citrus flavours. If you want to try something different, this is a fun glass of wine.
Flat Rock Pinot Noir 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
Quite nice in the glass: earthy, pale and light, with lots of vibrant red cherry, mineral, and something minty. The aromas give way to a richer sensation of liquorice and darker berries. There's an acidic bite to it, but so nicely balanced with lots of fruit and very little tannin that it ends in a long, almost smooth finish. Lovely. The real pleasure of this wine is the balance it strikes between delicate and plush.
Laurent Miquel Pere Et Fils Chardonnay 2010, Vin De Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France$12.95
The fruity aromas are tempered by a little nutmeg on the nose and the fuller texture on the palate is balanced by a good smattering of acidity. It's an easy to drink white with a nice price tag.
Fifth Leg Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2011
Western Australia, Australia$9.45
A very pale-in-the-glass wine with a refreshing nose of grass, unripe pineapple, grapefruit, and quince; fuller on the palate than it looks with a little herbacousness and some deeper melon notes. The finish is round and balanced with a hit of acid.
Angels Gate Riesling Sussreserve 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$14.95
Very light and delicate on the palate with a nose of green apple, grapefruit and mineral. The long finish is honey-tinged and has a subtle tangerine quality. Yum.
Kir Yianni Akakies Rosé 2011, Ao Amyndeon
Greece$12.95
Candy apple red with sweet cherry and red berry aromas that give way to a tart, cranberry flavour; crisp with a little lavendar on the finish.
Petit Rimauresq Grenache/Cinsault/Syrah Rosé 2011, Ac Côtes De Provence
France$13.95
A floral/herbacious nose of lavendar and oregano is livened up by some sweet fruit: strawberries and cherries. Light and tart on the palate, this wine is great value for a rosè from Provence.
Laborie Brut Sparkling Wine 2009, Wo Western Cape, Méthode Cap Classique
Western Cape, South Africa$14.70
This sparkler fills the mouth with a gently expanding bubbly sensation. The aromas of pink grapefruit, yellow apple, and yeasty goodness follow through with a tart, long, slightly bitter finish.
Lucien Albrecht Réserve Pinot Gris 2010, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$15.95
This silky white has pleasant aromas of peach, jasmine and pink grapefruit. The smooth quality of the wine gets a zesty, citrus kick making it fresh on the palate with a balanced finish.
