Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Marlborough
New Zealand$16.95
This is a great bottle of the New Zealand version of Sauvignon Blanc, which to me is always about the passionfruit and the slight bit of body to the wine. This bottle definitely has that passionfruit aroma along with some gooseberry, apple and a little grass, or greenbean depending upon your nose. The texture is smooth, but it finishes with a crisp, acidic bite and a lasting impression of citrus fruit.
Campbell's Shiraz/Durif 2010, Rutherglen, Victoria
Victoria, Australia$16.75
Loads of dark fruit with cinnamon and nutmeg and fresh mint quality. Round and full on the palate; soft tannins compliment the sweet prune and peppery finish.
Vincent Raimbault Brut Vouvray, Ac, Loire Valley, France, Méthode Traditionelle
Loire, France$17.95
A lovely fine mousse with apple and minerals on the nose and a hint of minerality followed by a zesty citrus finish.
Luigi Bosca Reserva Malbec 2009, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$17.95
A complex nose of earth, sour cherry, tobacco, vanilla, smoke, dried herbs is followed by a juicy, fruity quality on the palate; a bit on the light side for a Malbec, but nicely balanced and would make a great food wine.
Chateau Ksara Blanc De L'observatoire 2010, Bekaa Valley
Lebanon, World$13.50
Very aromatic with some floral notes, ripe tree fruit, and just a hint of caramel. Supple on the palate with a long, full finish. A nice white wine for sipping on its own.
Juan Gil White Label De Cepas Viejas Monastrell 2010, Do Jumilla
Murcia, Spain$12.95
Every time I went back to the glass there was something more. At first whiff it's earthy and brambly, then comes the dark fruit and leather followed by liquorice and juniper, and lastly a little smokiness and some sweet spices. The long liquorice-tinged finish has an inviting hint of black tea and a gentle tannic presence.
Sileni Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough, South Island
New Zealand$17.95
Tropical aromas of passionfruit and pineapple with an underpinning of citrus, grass and asparagus. Light and crisp on the palate with a long, tart finish.
Mont Marçal Brut Reserva Cava, Do
Spain$18.95
I love Cava and this bottle is good value. A nice Sunday afternoon kind of drink. Light and crisp with a fine mousse, fresh apple and pear on the nose with a citrus finish.
Cono Sur Organic Chardonnay 2011, San Antonio Valley, Chile
San Antonio Valley, Chile$14.05
This would be a great sipping wine on a warm summer's day. It has some ripe aromas of peaches, pineapple and even a little butterscotch, but is crisper on the palate with simple pink grapefruit and lemon.
Maycas Del Limarí Reserva Especial Chardonnay 2010, Limarí Valley
Limari Valley, Chile$20.00
A full Chardonnay with some buttery, butterscotch notes, pear, and warm spices balaced by some lemon and a hint of fresh herbs; creamy on the palate finishing with that butterscotch lingering for a while. If you like a ripe Chardonnay, this is nicely balanced saving a bit of an alcohol prickle at the end.
