Creekside Sauvignon Blanc 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$13.95
This is my idea of a yummy Sauvignon Blanc: light and crisp it goes down easy with lemon, grass, melon and just a hint of green pea on the nose. There's something a little sweet on the finish, like a jolt of pineapple under all that tart acidity. Great for sipping in the afternoon.
Château La Croix De Queynac 2009, Ac Bordeaux Supérieur
Bordeaux, France$15.95
A plush, juicy drink with rich aromas of earth, plum, cedar and liquorice. I found a little minerality perked it up on the finish, followed a tinge of something sweet and floral. A good deal for the price. Try it with a braised stew of red meat instead. Or a tian of Provencal vegetables, if that's more your thing.
Gran Lurton Corte Friulano 2010, Uco Valley, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$13.90
Ripe tree fruit, like apple and peach on the nose with some jasmine and nutmeg notes that get enlivened with a little minerality and citrus. A pleasant round feeling on the palate with a spicy, tingly finish. This white is on the rich side and would make a great afternoon sipping wine.
La Puerta Alta Bonarda 2009, Famatina Valley, La Rioja
Argentina$14.95
Very aromatic with cedar, red liquorice, earth and lavender, this interesting wine has a juicy, fruity palate and a little sweet spice on the finish. For 14% alcohol it's not overpowering and would go well with charcuterie.
Vinea Garganega 2010, Igt Veronese
Veneto, Italy$13.95
Notes of jasmine, ripe apple and pear mingle in the glass with a nutty, hazelnut overtone. The supple mouthfeel is perked up by a pleasant bitter lime aftertaste.
Garofoli Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi 2010, Classico Superiore
Marche, Italy$12.85
Sweet peach and apricot with honeysuckle and beeswax on the nose. The palate is round with some balancing acidity in the lemon flavour profile. A medium finish leaves the palate with a briny, bitter taste that is not unpleasant and would make this a great wine to pair with food.
Manu Pinot Grigio 2010, Marlborough
Marlborough, New Zealand$13.95
There's an aromatic nose of floral, ginger, and apricot followed by a crisper, simple palate of citrus fruit with a juicy finish. It's not complicated, just plain old good for afternoon sipping.
Astrolabe Voyage Pinot Noir 2009, Marlborough, South Island
Marlborough, New Zealand$24.95
Smooth and silky, this Pinot has a minerality to it with dried herbs, red cherry, violets and a hint of cola. The finish is berry tinged with some crisp acidity that shines for a good while on the palate.
Tahbilk Viognier 2010, Nagambie Lakes, Goulburn Valley
Victoria, Australia$16.70
This Viognier is lighter than most I've tried in the past. Settled deep in the wine are hints of honey, nuts, and ripe pear, but a more crisp, lemony aroma pervades the nose and the palate. Orange blossoms add to the creamy finish.
Taltarni T Series Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2011, Victoria
Victoria, Australia$14.40
This is a crisp, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc that sits somewhere between a Loire and a New Zealand version of the grape. There are hints of gooseberry and asparagus, but the wine stays fairly subtle and has a big citrus profile; chalky minerality adds some complexity. Light and mouthwatering the lime flavours really come out on the finish.
