Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve 2017, Aconcagua Valley
Aconcagua Valley, Chile$96.00
Bordeaux roots but the Chilean DNA on the nose with medium plus aromas of chili, bell pepper, lots of perfume, raspberry, and cassis.
A complex nose for sure. Deep ruby colour with medium flavours of red plum, blackberry, bell pepper, tobacco, blackcurrant, and minerals. Medium dry chalk tannins that settle after two hours.- Nov 2023
Condo De Los Andes 2004, Rioja
Rioja, Spain$100.00
Medium-intensity aromas of tobacco, balsamic, and oak. The aromas translated to the tongue with some mushrooms and beautiful dried fruit that lingered for a long time. It's light almost watery but the sweet and savory flavors take your complete attention away from that. Lovely wine.
Greywacke Riesling 2020, Marlborough, South Island
Marlborough, New Zealand$29.95
Well, here we have an excellent value wine.
Petroleum aromas, butter, and tropical fruits. The petrol overwhelms the other notes.
The palate is beautiful honey, cream, petrol, tropical fruits, cantaloupe, and soft citrus end. 18g/L sugar, what sugar, its deceptive, welcoming, and dangerous just like the quenching acidity. This will age beautifully
Tasted July 2
R. López De Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva 2010, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$72.85
Garnet with some bricking on the rim. Medium-intensity aromas of cherry, dried flowers, parmesan cheese, cured meat, oak, dill, molasses, and perfume.
Soft wine with medium acidity, soft tannins, chalk in mid-palate, integrated oak, dried herbs, cherry, saline, perfume, balsamic, and cedar. Short finish and sometimes I was reminded of Bordeaux, this is a rioja I can always drink.
Montes Purple Angel 2020, Do Valle De Colchagua
Colchagua Valley, Chile$96.95
I went in expecting to be Bombarded by those Chilean and Carmenère (92%) trademarks but the 8% Petit Verdot balanced it out very well.
Lovely soft bell peppers on the nose along with red chilies, and violet. The bell pepper and chili also followed through on the tongue but were subtle just like the nose. Some raspberry, jam, blackberry, and cherry came along for the ride. Medium tannins, acidity, and finish. Lovely stuff
Urbina Reserva 1998, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$42.95
Beautiful dried cherry smell along with prune and oak. Taste of oak, balsamic, dried black fruits and herbs. Acidity is still there and the tannins have soften with a slight dry finish. Past prime which i would peg at two to three years ago
Dry Creek The Mariner Meritage 2016, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
California, Usa$46.25
A hint of sediment.
Deep ruby color with medium minus intensity aromas of BBQ bell pepper, perfume, brown sugar, potting soil, and blackberry. The palate was in-your-face chalk tannins that go away quickly to reveal balsamic, vanilla, juicy red plum, strawberry, black fruits, bell pepper, oak & smoke.
High acidity & quick finish made for a fantastic food wine that needs 90 min to decant. 3 more years for tertiary notes to show?
Kleinood Tamboerskloof Syrah 2017
Stellenbosch, South Africa$49.86
Another light Syrah almost pinot-like, this was too easy to drink or is there such a thing? Medium minus aromas of violet, blueberry, and bacon fat. Flavours of dried red pepper, blackberry, raspberry, ash, with a hint of black pepper and menthol. Quick finish with approachable tannins and medium acidity. -March 2024
