Sterling Vintner's Collection Merlot 2009, Central Coast, California
California, Usa$16.00
This is a rather pleasant, easy drinking wine. While reasonably smooth, it does not have enough complexity or length to rate it a 90. But it is a decent value for the price.
Varanda Do Conde Alvarinho/Trajadura Vinho Verde 2010, Doc, Sub Região Monção E Melgaço
Vinho Verde, Portugal$13.95
Lemon lime flavour with a touch of mineral, and a long finish. I have been sipping a bit of it all week, and want more. Great value.
Bolla Valpolicella 2011, Veneto
Veneto, Italy$10.95
A nice fresh tasting wine, with flavours of plum and black cherry, and a slightly spicy note. Very clean taste. I really enjoyed this wine, especially at this price point.
Castello Del Poggio Moscato
Piedmont, Italy$15.45
I did not read these reviewes carefully enough to realize just how sweet and sparkling it was. Given that, it is very smooth and tasty, and not expensive. Easy drinking, in fact so easy and low alcohol that we fairly quickly plowed through the whole bottle.
Umani Ronchi San Lorenzo Rosso Conero 2008, Doc
Marche, Italy$14.95
I had to look up "brettanomyces". Well, there may be a little barnyard in the bouquet, but the taste is very clean to me. Maybe it is best served in a small glass. It has rich berry flavours with a an extra kick of fruit near the end. I probably should rate it a very good 89, but I am leaning toward the magic 90. Great value.
Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier 2011, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile$9.95
Very smooth, with just the right amount of Viognier bite. This would be a great value at twice the price. Don't miss out on this.
Monte Del Frá Tenuta Lena Di Mezzo Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2008, Doc
Veneto, Italy$17.95
This is trying to be a great wine, but does not quite make it. Maybe the volatile acidity does not cut it with me. OK value.
Mas Des Bressades Cuvée Tradition Rosé 2011, Ac Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France$15.95
Very nice, almost no sweetness, smooth taste. I did not notice any bitterness until two reviewers mentioned it. So maybe it is slightly bitter on the finish, but not enough to spoil it, and I am fussy about that sort of thing. For the price it is great for a summer evening.
Abanico Tempestad Godello 2010, Do Valdeorras
Spain$17.95
I found this to be a simple, smooth and pleasant wine. I did not notice any sour edged finish or any other strangeness I expected from reading these reviews.
Domaine De Viaud 2001, Ac Lalande De Pomerol
Bordeaux, France$28.95
A good wine has complex harmony of flavours. This has it, but the bouqut is slightly off, and there is also a constant hum from start to finish of a rather "hot" note. While not unpleasant, it does not make for a great wine, so I consider this to be poor value, despite (or because of?) the promising vintage. I should have listened to David.
