Trumpour's Mill Pinot Noir 2008, VQA Prince Edward County, Estate Btld.
Ontario, Canada$18.95
The vintage may have been difficult, but so was the wine to drink. I tasted notes of gasoline, and length in this case is no virtue. Best left on the shelf.
Parusso Piani Noce Dolcetto D'alba 2009, Doc
Piedmont, Italy$16.95
Its a Dolcetto, it is supposed to be simple and it is. While very good, how can Antonio Galloni give it a 90? He seems to like anything Italian. 17 bucks seems a lot for something that would cost a few Euros in Italy, but this is Canada. The name means "walnut floors" - go figure.
Cesarini Sartori Rossobastardo 2008, Igt Umbria
Umbria, Italy$14.95
Complex and interesting taste that is hard to describe. (Wine reviewing will never be a career for me.) Pleasant and smooth at first, over time some harshness crept in. Still, much better than the 85 rating it gets here.
Faustino V I I Tempranillo 2012, Rioja
Rioja, Spain$10.75
I would never have bought this if I had read any of these reviews. I am convinced that some vintages really vary by bottle, because I have had this before and I do not remember it being so good. This one is a very nice wine with no hot, bitter or tannic finish. Who knows what you will get.
Eastdell Gamay Noir 2016, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$11.05
Well, I liked this simple, easy drinking wine. It was smooth, and had none of the unwanted (al least to me) flavours often found in supposedly better Gamay.
Marchesi Di Barolo Langhe Rosso 2009, Doc
Piedmont, Italy$14.75
I never would have bought this if I had seen the reviews first. It is not that bad, with a fruity taste, a little harshness, and not much finish. Nice looking bottle, but I have certainly had better at that price point.
Pepperwood Grove Old Vine Zinfandel 2012
California, Usa$13.95
Come on, guys, those are pour it down the toilet and flush twice ratings. So what if it does not taste like a regular zinfandel. It is a fourteen buck wine. If you forget the expectations, it is pretty good. Pepper and cherry, with some complexity and a good finish. And it grows on me with time. I will buy this one again.
Le G De Château Guiraud 2009, Ac
Bordeaux, France$19.65
Both smooth and complex. Sauternes quality with a no-name label for a very good price.
