Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir 2012
California, Usa$26.95
This is one of our favorites at a local wine bar, which they describe as a fruit and spice bomb. When I saw it in the LCBO I wondered why I missed it on WineAlign. Now I see why. OK, it is not exactly as subtle as a Prince Edward County pinot noir. But if you forget preconceptions of how pinot is supposed to taste, this is very pleasant indeed, and it grows on me as I drink more of it. This bottle is labeled 2013.
Lan Crianza 2009
Rioja, Spain$15.95
Very pleasant, none of the tastes are out of place. Not perfectly smooth, but still a great deal for the price.
Salentein Reserve Malbec 2011, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$17.95
Rich fruit taste with some complexity emerging after the first glass. If it was perfectly smooth this would be a great wine, but is still very good value for the price.
Root: 1 Carmenère 2012
Colchagua Valley, Chile$12.95
It took some time to fully appreciate this one. Black current with an edge of spice. Really smooth, and excellent value, maybe worth twice the price. This is a repeat buy.
Hidden Bench Felseck Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$38.00
I give this a 90 because it is smooth with no flaws or unwanted flavours. There is not enough complexity to rate it higher, but this wine is very pleasant to drink.
Trius Red 2012, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$22.95
Pepper, tobacco and cherry. Smoothness increases with each glass. This wine is a superb value, as good as forty dollar wines from the same region.
Benziger Chardonnay 2012, Sonoma County
California, Usa$19.95
All I taste is oak. It gets a little worse with every sip. This is almost pour down the sink quality. Brutal.
Huff Quarry Road Pinot Noir 2013, VQA Vinemount Ridge
Ontario, Canada$30.00
Mild sour cherry at the start with some complexity. There is a small hit of caramel a few seconds after the finish. Maybe I should wait like John suggested.
Leonardo Chianti Riserva 2011, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
Soft and silky, with a taste of strawberry. Using the carafe made it a lot smoother, but perhaps it lost a little character. To me it is well worth it, but my partner thought otherwise.
Mondeco Red 2010, Do Dão
Dão, Portugal$13.95
Really dry wine, with fruit, spice and licorice. The taste is very clean with no harshness. I think this is a superb value.
