Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf Du Pape 2006, Ac Bottle
Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf Du Pape 2006, Ac
Rhône, France
$47.00

My notes are from the '07 vintage. Ripe wine here, in fact over-the-top ripe. Amarone-like 16.3% alcohol and you can definitely tasted it - like someone added vermouth to the must. Sure, CdP are ripe wines, but this is just beyond reason. The grapes for this wine were simply picked 10-14 days too late, I'm sure in an effort to impress a certain influential critic. I actually found it work to finish a glass. Tasted April 2015.

Frescobaldi Tenuta Di Castiglioni 2007, Igt Toscana Bottle
Frescobaldi Tenuta Di Castiglioni 2007, Igt Toscana

$21.95

From the colour to the palate, there is no doubt that this is a wine designed to impress fans of internationally-styled wines. There is clearly some good fruit here but the heavy-handed oak treatment completely obscures any sense of place. The oak was present from the first whiff right through the finish. Just too much for my palate. Tasted May 2012.

Delaforce Quinta Da Côrte Vintage Port 1997, Dop Bottle
Delaforce Quinta Da Côrte Vintage Port 1997, Dop
Douro, Portugal
$45.95

Called into action during the holidays when a bottle of Noval LBV turned out to be corked, this Vintage Port was a pleasant surprise. Medium-bodied, with moderate sweetness and balancing acidity, this '97 Delaforce has excellent depth of fruit, fine tannin and no sense of being over the hill at all - This bottle has plenty of life left in it. Drink now or hold for another 5 years or so. Tasted Dec 2012.

Pannon Tokaj Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos 2003, Tokaj Hegyalja
Hungary
$21.95

At 8 years of age, the deepening shade of amber comes as no surprise. A swirl in the glass reveals a viscous wine that clings to the side of the glass. Armoas of dried fruit and sweetness waft from the glass. On the palate, powerful notes of dried apricots, perhaps a touch of dried mango and honey. Sweet, yes, but lovely balance and a long, lingering finish. At about $22 for 500ml, this puts Niagara ice wines to shame. Mature and ready to drink but will hold for a bit as well. Lovely!

Helfrich Gewurztraminer 2010, Ac Alsace Bottle
Helfrich Gewurztraminer 2010, Ac Alsace

$18.95

Golden yellow in colour, with notable vicousness. Rich and mouth filling, with loads of tropical fruit. Hints of lemon and finishes with some sweetness. But all is in fine balance due to good acidity. Excellent wine and a great match to spicy foods. Tasted July 2012.

A very solid, complex Vacqueyras. Still remarkably youthful, both in colour and structure. Loads of ripe fruit, firm tannin and spice/pepper. Nicely balanced. Drink 2016-2021. tasted sep 2015.

La Crau De Ma Mère Châteauneuf Du Pape 2010, Ac Bottle
La Crau De Ma Mère Châteauneuf Du Pape 2010, Ac
Rhône, France
$44.95

This CdP certainly has some authentic southern Rhone attributes. Very spicy and peppery, with loads of herbs mixed in. But there is a dearth of joyous fruit that make wines of the south Rhone so endearing. Also, there is considerable bitterness and sharp acidity. Yet another disappointing CdP - will stick with cheaper Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Rasteau from now on. Tasted Dec 2017.

The cork simply disintegrated when I tried to extract it....on a 13 year old wine? Ominous sign? Fortunately, not. Once I decanted the wine and filtered out the remnants of the cork, what was left was an excellent and very youthful Vintage Port. Did I really get this on sale for $22?? What a steal! Very concentrated, with sweet fruit, dried fruit and a very long finish where you will find some firm tannin. Most enjoyable now, but I really should have waited another 5 years. I can certainly imagine this wine living well into the next decade. Excellent! Tasted Dec 2020.

Château Puech Haut Prestige Saint Drézéry 2010, Dop Languedoc Bottle
Château Puech Haut Prestige Saint Drézéry 2010, Dop Languedoc
Languedoc, France
$26.95

Purchased at Empire Wines in Albany for about $17 (when the C$ was at par!). A big, complex red with lots of extraction and alcohol but also some real southern France character (black fruit, pepper, herbs. Tannin is started to soften now. Finish is merely good (hence the sub 90pts rating). Overpriced in our monopoly wine market but good value when purchase in the US a few years ago. Tasted Jan 2016.

Fine Brunello, leaning more toward the traditional style. Complex, long-finish. Still lots of life in this wine. Tasted Apr 2017.
