Foncalieu Prestige Fitou 2019, A.P.
Languedoc, France$12.95
I don't think that I have ever seen a Fitou at such a low price at the LCBO. The dark fruit is backed by notable herbs and notes of black pepper. Oak is non-existent (likely since it was not aged in oak), and decent complexity and length. $12.95? Really?? This might be the value of the year at Vintages. Really good wine! Tasted Aug 2021.
Fattoria Di Piazzano Ventoso Sangiovese 2019, I.G.T. Toscana
Tuscany, Italy$17.00
A little brett on the nose, but nothing off-putting in my bottle, This Sangiovese certainly leans toward the more rustic side of the grape's expression, but there is no doubting its origin, Sour cherry, a bit of cured meat, some dried fruit and brisk tannin and acidity on the finish. I'd opt to drink this sooner than later, but interesting wine if not to everyone's taste. Tasted May 2022.
Chateau D'aigueville Côte Du Rhône Villages 2019, Ac
Rhône, France$18.95
Certainly mature, but by no means over the hill. Good ripe fruit, balanced, with hints of herbs and pepper. Relatively simply but spot on and pleasurable, Drink in the near term. Tasted Nov 2024.
Château Calet 2019, Ac Blaye Côtes De Bordeaux
Bordeaux, France$13.00
Solid, honest right bank red. A bit lean and tart but some nice red berry fruit, and a bit of an herbal finish. Really liked this wine for not much cash especially. Tasted May 2025.
Guarda Rios Red 2022, Vinho Regional Alentejano
Alentejo, Portugal$11.95
Agree with David on this, a no nonsense straightforward red with hint of sweetness (just 5g/L according to LCBO website, seems a bit higher). Simple but very enjoyable. Great bbq wine while we still have these warm evenings, At $11, a steal. Portugal rules! Tasted Sep 2024.
M. Chapoutier La Ciboise Luberon 2022, Ap
Rhône, France$14.95
As one has come to expect from M. Chapoutier, this red has plenty of character. Loaded with ripe fruits, with notable flavours herbs and cured meat. Sure, its a bit rough around the edges and the finish is merely good, but at $15, this is superb value. Chill a bit and enjoy in the short term. Tasted Sep 2025.
Emu Australian Apera Medium Dry
Australia$10.55
Simple, but pleasant sherry-style wine from Australia. Wines like this from outside of Spain are no longer labelled "sherry" as that name is reserved for sherries made in the Jerez region - this one is called Apera, Pleasant notes of dried fruit with hints of citrus (orange/lemon), with crisp acidity and not too sweet. Nothing special, but fine enough for $9. Tasted Dec 2017.
Château Mourgues Du Grès Les Galets Rouges 2007, Ac Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France$14.95
Quite deep and desne for $15, this possesses ripe dark berry druit, spice and some funk that I sometimes fine in the reds of the south of France. Lots of interest for the money and a great food wine. For drinking over the next couple of years.
13th Street Gamay Noir 2007, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$22.75
Clearly, one of the more serious gamays in Niagara. A wine with plenty of red fruit, good structure and fine acidity. A fair whack of vanilla from the oak ageing accompanies all that fruit and therein lies my only complaint of this wine....a bit too much oak. I find this a common issue (for me) with many Niagara reds. I would hesitate to say over-oaked in this case, just that it takes away from the character of the gamay grape.
Château Croze De Pys Cuvée Prestige Cahors 2006, Ac
Southwest, France$16.95
The 2005 vintage. Tasted a nearly 9 years of age, this Cahors has aged wonderfully. The youthful tannin has softened yet the flavours remain complex and deep. Black fruit with hints of smoke and wood. The finish is good, but a little more length would have pushed the score over 90. Still, A $17 wine that tastes this good after nearly 9 years is a real joy. Drink now or in the next couple of years. Tasted May 2014.
