La Ferme Du Mont Côtes Jugunda Gigondas 2013, Ap
Rhône, France$24.75
To my taste buds, I get more of the red fruit (esp strawberries), no doubt to the predominance of Grenache in the blend. in more a supporting role are notes of pepper and spice. Tannin is mellow - this wine seems to be at its peak now. The finish is lingering. Nice CdR here. Tasted Aug 2019.
Helfrich Gewurztraminer 2010, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$18.95
Golden yellow in colour, with notable vicousness. Rich and mouth filling, with loads of tropical fruit. Hints of lemon and finishes with some sweetness. But all is in fine balance due to good acidity. Excellent wine and a great match to spicy foods. Tasted July 2012.
Punset Barbaresco 2010
Piedmont, Italy$49.75
From first whiff, there is no doubting the quality of this Barbaresco. Aromatic, with notes of cherries and dried flowers. On the palate pure Nebbiolo, still notable tannin, with intense flavours of sour cherries, dried fruit and a touch of earthiness. Complex, long finishing with mouth puckering tannin and acidity....just as it should be. The purity of the fruit is remarkable. What a superb wine! But if you have a bottle, hold another 2 years, this is still a bit young. Best wine I have had in 2018. Tasted Nov 2018.
Norman Hardie County Cabernet Franc 2013, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$25.00
Notes for the 2014 vintage:
I wanted to like this wine...very fond memories of the County as a child. But this is a lean and very tart cab franc. Highly acidic, with lemony notes and some hints of tart sour cherries. Thankfully, little of the vegetal notes that plague many cab francs but, to me, this wine just lacks ripeness and fruit. OK with food. not nearly worth $29. Tasted Jul 2017.
Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Sagrantino 2008, Docg
Umbria, Italy$39.95
Huge, ripe, highly concentrated with still massive chewy tannin and marked acidity. As JS said, most certainly not soft and cuddly, this is loaded with flavour from both the fruit and some oak (though this is well integrated). And did I mention the tannin....still omnipresent after 10 years. Wow. An impressive wine for sure, but still a few years from prime drinking in my view. Hold until at least 2021, I can imagine this sailing past its 20th birthday with ease. Tasted Dec 2018.
Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2009
Tuscany, Italy$39.95
Just too much American oak derived coconut flavours for me. If blind tasting, I'd have guessed Rioja. Some good fruit lurking there, but why obliterate it with oak? Geez.....Tasted Oct 2017.
Paolo Conterno Riva Del Bric Barolo 2010, Unfiltered, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$39.95
Not much to add to John and David's notes from 3 years ago, they were spot on. Classico Barolo here, without caving to the use of prominent oak. Still quite youthful with some noted tannin (this is Nebbiolo, after all), but this seems to have just entered prime drinking stage. This should hold for several more years. $40 for this level of Barolo is a bargain. Lovely. Tasted Oct 2018.
Borges Vintage Port 2007, Doc Douro, Btld. 2009
Douro, Portugal$22.25
The cork simply disintegrated when I tried to extract it....on a 13 year old wine? Ominous sign? Fortunately, not. Once I decanted the wine and filtered out the remnants of the cork, what was left was an excellent and very youthful Vintage Port. Did I really get this on sale for $22?? What a steal! Very concentrated, with sweet fruit, dried fruit and a very long finish where you will find some firm tannin. Most enjoyable now, but I really should have waited another 5 years. I can certainly imagine this wine living well into the next decade. Excellent! Tasted Dec 2020.
Pannon Tokaj Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos 2003, Tokaj Hegyalja
Hungary$21.95
At 8 years of age, the deepening shade of amber comes as no surprise. A swirl in the glass reveals a viscous wine that clings to the side of the glass. Armoas of dried fruit and sweetness waft from the glass. On the palate, powerful notes of dried apricots, perhaps a touch of dried mango and honey. Sweet, yes, but lovely balance and a long, lingering finish. At about $22 for 500ml, this puts Niagara ice wines to shame. Mature and ready to drink but will hold for a bit as well. Lovely!
Te Mata Estate Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Hawke's Bay, New Zealand$25.75
An intense, unusual Sauvignon. Ripe, with tropical fruits intermingled with lime and grapefruit and an marked spicy note (like apple spice). Fine complexity and long finishing, with crisp acidity. Certainly unlike any Sauvignon I have ever had. Fine wine indeed. Tasting Dec 2017.
