La Chevalière Rasteau 2017, A.O.C. Rasteau
Rhône, France$20.95
A bit of a strange combination of jammy ripe fruit, high alcohol, and tart, coarse acidity. A fairly simple wine that provides only modest drinking pleasure. Overpriced at $21. I suppose it is the "Rasteau" on the label allows for a price premium over generic Cotes du Rhone - it certainly is not what is in the bottle. A '17 Brunel Cuvée Sabrine Côtes Du Rhône Villages that I had 2 weeks ago was much better - a $5 cheaper. Tasted Feb 2022.
Rémy Ferbras Terre De Mistral Plan De Dieu Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2017, Ap
Rhône, France$16.95
Very well made, wonderfully delicious CdR Villages, I could drink this any time of week...or any time of day for that matter. Stellar value. Alas, appears to be nearly sold out at the Vintages. Tasted July 2021.
Peique Ramon Valle Mencia 2018, D.O. Bierzo
Galicia, Spain$17.25
Big, bold, swarthy with lots of ripeness and warming alcohol. Plenty of tannin and crisp acidity on the finish. Rockin' wine, I really liked this. Discounted to $17, if you can still find it, buy a couple of bottles. I like the exuberance of it now, but would be curious to see how this ages. Tasted May 2023.
Bayle Carreau Château Landreau 2016, Ac Côtes De Bourg
Bordeaux, France$20.95
Fruity, bright, and dare I say, cheerful right bank red Bordeaux. Medium-bodied, this has a supple texture, nearly invisible oak and juicy red fruit. Lovely wine for summer drinking. No need to age, its at it peak now. Tasted Aug 2021.
Villa Symposia L'equilibre 2017, Languedoc
France$20.95
To my taste, this seems a leaner expression of the Languedoc, That's not a a negative thing, this is indeed a lovely red, just that it is more medium-bodied with high acidity, Fruit is nicely ripened, wood makes no intrusion and fine complexity. Really grew on me the more I sipped. Tasted May 2021.
Alamos Malbec 2019
Mendoza, Argentina$16.00
Rich, ripe, gently herbal with some supporting vanilla notes from the oak. A hint of of prunes on the finish. Not complex but very well made and most enjoyable, especially considering the reasonable price. Drink now. Tasted Nov 2023.
Paternoster Synthesi 2017, Doc Aglianico Del Vulture
Basilicata, Italy$19.95
Youthful aglianico, ideally in need of another couple of years in bottle. Complex, a bit rustic, brimming with flavour and finishing with firm tannin and high acidity. Really fine wine and excellent value. Tasted Oct 2021.
Lua Cheia Old Vines Red 2019, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$15.95
Loads of dark fruit - a very upfront red. Yet there is some real depth and complexity here. Tannin and acidity nicely frame that ripe fruit. Not intended for long ageing, but, as always, this is a super value from the Douro, Perfect for BBQs. Tasted Aug 2022.
Castellani Filicheto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2016
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
Seems a bit more oak than I remember from the 09, 10 vintages. Still, a well-made Tuscan red, with enough Sangiovese character to overcome the wood. For current drinking, Tasted Jul 2022.
M. Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes Du Rhône Grenache/Syrah 2019
Rhône, France$16.70
Not much to add to David's review. Once again, Chapoutier delivers at a nice price, with a CdR that exudes South Rhone character. Smooth, and simply delicious. Easy multiple bottle purchase. Tasted Nov 2021.
