Château De Montfaucon "La Côte" Côtes Du Rhône 2019, Ap
Rhône, France$21.95
What a lovely, balanced CdR, a wine that questions why anyone would spend $50+ for a Chateauneuf de Pape when, for $22, delicious reds like this are produced in this region and labelled "lowly" Cotes du Rhone. Brimming with ripe fruit, spice and pepper with a long finish, Ready to drink. Tasted Sep 2024.
Garzón Pinot Rosé De Corte 2023, Garzón
Uruguay, World$19.95
Barely pink in colour, so pale is this wine. At first, I was "meh", but this grew on me. I suspect it was a wee bit too cold when I first tried it, which my have rather deadened my palate. The wine is crisp and light, hints of orchard fruit (peaches) and strawberries. Charming and nifty. Now I know where Uruguay is on the map.
Tasted Jul 2024.
Lafage Cayrol Vieilles Vignes Carignan 2021, I.G.P. Côtes Catalanes
Roussillon, France$19.95
Not too often that one comes across a wine made from 100% Carignan. Very ripe, with lots of alcohol (15% according to the label). An in-your-face wine, with lots of concentrated fruit, and plenty of herbal notes. A bit of bitterness on the finish which you may like or not. Really fine wine, as one has come to expect from this producer. Tasted Jul 2024.
Mazzei Fonterutoli Chianti Classico 2021, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$24.95
A bit heavy on the oak ageing, this is a simple CC from Fonterutoli. Sure, it has some of the cherry fruit and dusty tannin associated with Sangiovese, but it all seems so muted. Decent, but over-priced. Tasted Aug 2024.
Tenuta Di Renieri Chianti Classico 2020, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$22.95
I struggled with this wine. High acidity, slightly tart red fruit, taut tannin....as one would expect from a CC, Yet, it seems rather austere and a bit joyless at the moment. Agree with DL, I would age this another few years, it may mellow and provide more pleasure. Tasted Oct 2024.
Muralhas De Monção Vinho Verde 2016, Doc
Vinho Verde, Portugal$15.95
Mmmm, lemony...Citrus, citrus, and more citrus. Dry, fairly crisp, refreshing. Definitely some spritz here (as evidenced by fine bubbles arising after I transferred the remained of the bottle to a smaller bottle). A bit more weight than some Vinho Verdes. Finishes very dry. Decent value for consuming this summer. Tasted July 2018.
Château La Roche Bazin 2014, Ac Côtes De Bordeaux Blaye
Bordeaux, France$18.95
A fine right-bank red from an under-rated
vintage (in the shadow of '15 and '16). Medium-bodied, with nicely ripened (though still cooler climate) red fruit, with only hints of influence from barrel ageing. Dry, crisp, and a nice way to experience red Bordeaux without having to take out a second mortgage. Tasted Feb 2019.
Adegamãe Dory Red 2015, Vinho Regional Lisboa
Portugal$11.75
A ripe, robust and highly satisfying red made from a blend or Portuguese and French varieties. Easy drinking and not highly structured, this wine is not intended for anything but short term ageing (as further evidenced by the short, cheapo particle board cork). Plenty of ripe, smoking fruit and more complexity and length than one often finds at the price. Nice stuff indeed. Tasted August 2018.
Pierre Amadieu Les Hautes Rives Cairanne 2015, Ap
Rhône, France$17.75
Nicely balanced Cairanne from Amadieu. Nothing is out of place - alcohol is in check, no overt wood, fruit perfectly ripened, Rhone spice. Lovely stuff and very fine value. Tasted Sep 2020.
Villa Cafaggio Chianti Classico Riserva 2012, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$26.95
A CC Riserva that doesn't try too hard. Bright red cherries and currants, with well-integrated wood, softening tannin and telltale Sangiovese acidity. A food wine, as Chianti's should be. Just missing a bit of that extra depth to push over 90pts. Tasted Aug 2018.
