Inglenook 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, Rutherford, Napa Valley
California, Usa$57.75
A fine cab from Inglenook, tight and fairly dense, with some firm tannin. I like the balance between the fruit and oak. Decent complexity and length, but falls short of outstanding. This is a very good wine, but I have had $25 Chilean cabs that are the equal. Might show better with 2-3 years more bottle age. Tasted Mar 2023.
Famille Perrin Les Christins Vacqueyras 2019, A.C.
Rhône, France$21.25
Made to high standards as one would expect from the Perrins. Pepper, herbs and restrained black fruit, finishing with some drying tannin. Me thinks this needs until end of 2024 to show better. Tasted Aug 2023.
Château De Tréviac Corbières 2019, A.P.
Languedoc, France$15.25
Vintage after vintage, Chateau de Treviac produces a flavourful, distinctive red at a superb price. The '19 is much the same, rich, herb-infused and just damn delicious. And yet people will ante up 3 times as much money for sought-after ACs like Chateauneuf. Tasted Dec 2022.
Château De Nages Vieilles Vignes Blanc 2020, A.C. Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France$22.95
Nice white. Tropical fruits, Soft, relatively low acids, good complexity. Hanging on nicely, but drink this sooner than later. Tasted Apr 2024.
Tawse Grower's Blend Cabernet Franc 2020
Ontario, Canada$29.95
Atypical Cab Franc here, with little of the herbal notes often found in Niagara Cab Francs. Now doubt, this is largely due to the long, warm, dry 2020 vintage. Ripe, red fruit-dominated (raspberry) with oak seemlessly folded in to the flavour profile. Firm but silky tannin on the finish. A very nicely done red here from Tawse that seems to be at peak drinking now.
Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$22.95
Medium bodied, nicely assembled Cab Sauv from Coonawarra. Notes of cooler climate herbs provide backdrop for the blackberry fruit. Oak is well in the background and the finish has some furry tannin. Very solid, as one has come to expect from this producer. Drinking fine now. Tasted Dec 2023.
Château Tanesse 2018, A.C. Côtes De Bordeaux Cadillac
Bordeaux, France$21.95
Starts off with fairly pronounced whack of oak, but plenty of fruit fills in the middle palate. Fine tannin and everything seems well balanced after all. A nice lingering finish with fine silky tannin. This seems to be a good place now, but surely can hold a few more years. Super value in red Bordeaux. Think that I will grab another bottle, Tasted April 2023.
Domaine Brunely Vacqueyras 2020, A.P.
Rhône, France$20.25
A good CdR, with good flavour typicity. But somehow I felt something missing, Modest complexity and structure, a bit warm on the palate and a bit dilute on the finish. If this was a $17 CdR, fine, but it is a $25 (release price) Vacqueyras, a region know for wines superior to just a Cdr/CdR Villages label. Drink now, Tasted Apr 2024.
San Felice Chianti Classico Docg 2021, Castelnuovo Berardenga
Tuscany, Italy$17.45
Soft and easy going Chianti Classico. Relatively simple but tasty flavours (cherries come to mind), light tannin and the requisite Sangiovese acidity. Chill just a bit and drink in the nearer term. Tasted Nov 2024.
Maria Papoila Loureiro/Alvarinho 2022, Doc Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde, Portugal$17.95
Very crisp, and lean....plenty of lemon-lime flavours with a hint of barely ripe mango (I kid you not, that's what I get) Comes off as dry despite 8g/L of RS thanks to the brisk acidity. Just 11.5% abv, so I would guess that this was early-picked. Very enjoyable wine, but works best with appropriate food (eg fish). Tasted Jul 2024.
